Title: B Movies for kids?
Post by: lester1/2jr on May 07, 2009, 05:44:01 PM
Anyone had any luck showing any b movies to kids?  once a week I babysit my sisters kids who are 6 1/2 and 5.  mainly tom and jerry, woody woodpecker with some gummi bears and dungeons and dragons so we aren't living completely in the past.

So far "Robot Monster" went over pretty well.  We also watch "White Pongo" sometimes but it's kind of just on in the background.  I tried "the brain that wouldn't die" but it was a little edgy.

The watermellon monster from "drunken wutang" is a huge crowd pleaser.  Any classic b movies or others for the kiddos?

Just about any Godzilla movie

Tremors was OK for me despite some language and blood

I remember watching Army of Darkness at a young age, again, some language and violence though obviously not as bad as it's predecessors

Just about any Italian programmer with Hercules, Maciste, Samson, Ursus, Atlus or Goliath in the title might keep them outta yer hair. Heck , just buy the Mill Creek "Warriors" 50 pack and start with disc 1.

Although its not a movie, Thundarr The Barbarian has wonderful B-plots.

I'll agree with Godzilla, especially the ones where Big G is the good guy and everything is extra campy.

I'd agree with all the Godzilla votes.

But, I'd also add Gamera to the fray.  Gamera's great.

And while they're not "B-Movies" in the traditional sense, both Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie and Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie are fun to watch.  In MMPR: The Movie, they at least attempted (unsuccessfully) to CGI the giant monsters/zord fight at the end.  In Turbo, they went the "Godzilla" route: men in rubber costumes walking around a set of cardboard buildings.

I'd Also Vote For The POWER RANGERS And TREMORS Movies
They Were My Favorites As A Kid

In my experience, kids will often embrace b-movies, maybe because of their lack of exposure to movies with higher production values. As a kid, I adored all the Godzilla movies (and I still have them all on VHS) more than most television cartoons. Maybe that's just me.

"Howard the Duck" seems to go over pretty well, and with some choice fast forward editing it is kid safe.  I think that "The Last Starfighter" would be another likely choice.  Classic monster films like "The Giant Claw" and anything by Ray Harryhausen should also be safe in most cases, but some might be too intense for young kids (I'd think hard before showing them something like "Fiend Without a Face" or other gruesome films).

For some others:

Spaced Invaders (http://www.badmovies.org/movies/spacedinv/)

Mom and Dad Save the World (http://www.badmovies.org/movies/momdad/)

Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (http://www.badmovies.org/movies/santamars/)

My kids love the Godzilla and the Gamera films.

They'd probably enjoy Prehysteria (I think there was like three of those), about a family that discovers some dinosaur eggs which promptly hatch and do all sorts of things.

Carnosa- No, that wouldn't be good...

Flesh for the Bea- No, don't do that one either...

House at the Edge of the P- No, bad idea...

Adding on to those Power Rangers suggestions, I'd also add some of the older fighting super hero robot movies and shows, like Ultraman, Ultra 7, Spectre Man, Mirror Man, etc. Let's also not forget Infra-Man.

-The Crater Lake Monster might not be too bad.
-The Gate is another one I used to watch a lot as a kid.  That one was a favorite amongst my classmates in elementary school.
-Also, House with William Katt.  I saw that in theaters when it came out when I was about four or five, and it was probably my first really great b-movie memory, not to mention the first time I really had fun at the theaters.
-Orochi, the Eight-Headed Dragon might be a fun one.  Think movies like Hercules, only with kaiju.
-One of the Daimajin movies would also work (I want to say it was Wrath of Daimajin, but I could be wrong), what with the main characters all being kids.
-Mom and Dad Save the World seems to come to mind, although I don't know if that counts as a b-movie.

"The Magic Sword" was MADE for kids!  Knights, swords, dragons, fighting, wizards, monsters and just enough spookiness to make it fun but not enough to cause long-term scarring of the psyche.

Going from my own experience with my nephews, I haven't really been able to get them interested in anything by "forcing" it on them.  The seven year old has a short attention span and can't really watch more than a couple of minutes of anything without getting bored, although he's fascinated by the idea of bad movie and keeps asking me about them.

I tried letting them watch a king fu film with some success (the older one is into martial arts).  The older one liked JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS but the 7 year old complained that the special effects were bad ().  I showed them the climax to THE MANITOU (forgot about the very brief and distant nudity, but they picked up on it right away), which they liked but I knew they couldn't sit through the whole thing.  They show zero interest in MST3K, which I can understand.

On their own, however, they picked out HOWARD THE DUCK and SUPER MARIO BROTHERS and loved them (without realizing they were "bad" until I told them).

Yea, the ones where the Big G dies in the end might need to be avoided. My son watched one a LONG time ago and couldn't quite grasp the story, but was upset when Godzilla died. Not what I intended.

These are not all necessarily b movies, but they get the job done with the kiddies and adults as well! (These worked on me when I was a kid:
Pee Wees Big Adventure
Big Top Pee Wee
Plan 9 From Outer Space
Mars Attacks
Labyrinth
Dark Crystal
The Neverending Story
Spaced Invaders
Frankenweenie
Howard the Duck
Little Monsters & The Wizard (Fred Savage!)
My Stepmother is an Alien
Starman
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes
Bad News Bears

Just watched Godzilla vs. Megalon with my daughter yesterday. My wife's attending an out-of-town conference for a few days, and it seemed like a good way to pass some time. Now, the kid's crazy about Godzilla. She was enthusiastic before, having seen the movie boxes, and even having Godzilla referenced in one of her books, but now she's asking to watch more movies and she's standing her toy stegosaurus up on its hind legs and calling it Godzilla. So, I have to sort out which of the other movies are good for kids. I'm thinking G vs. Mothra, G vs. Monster Zero, G vs. Gigan and G vs. Mechagodzilla should all be tame/silly enough. I'm going to stick with the older ones, although she is very interested in Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla, mainly because of the baby Godzilla on the box.

One thing that really helped was starting the movie in the middle, so we saw less of the humans and more of the monsters. Then I just explained why they were fighting. Seemed to work well enough.

The only drawback has been that I've had to stop her from stepping on her toy cars and houses. :teddyr:
