stories as of late that show some former communist peoples pining for the days of secret police and lack of freedom of expression. Well not exactly, but they are pining for the days of having enough to eat, having decent health care and not being subject to the insane elements of western style consumerism.
There was moment like this prior to this and that was after the great depression. people lost faith in the chaos of free markets and mussolini, stalin, hitler, and other emerged as nation after nation of people figured the freedom they'd known was all too good to be true. Are we entering another age like that now?

It is. Same problem that gave rise to Nazi Germany.
To be fair, looking at the chaos of former communist countries who threw themselves wide open to capitalism (think Russia in the mid-late 90's) and just got 1) inflation and 2) gangsterism. I can see how a stable, if inherently flawed system, would generate nostalgia.
