Title: Free ON DEMAND movies for June
Post by: Rev. Powell on June 01, 2009, 09:18:42 PM
Stuff that interests me, that I may or may not get around to watching:

SUNDANCE CHANNEL

ERASERHEAD:  Seems like whenever I rent  movie from Netflix, it immediately shows up for free on On Demand.  Available until 6/23.
INLAND EMPIRE:  David Lynch's latest.  I'll probably make this a priority. Available until 6/16.
LADY VENGEANCE:  With OLDBOY, part of the Vengeance trilogy.  Another priority. Available until 6/23.
ONE MISSED CALL:  Miike thriller.  6/16.

FEARNET
2001 MANIACS: I keep passing this up, and given my other choices this month, I probably will again.  Available until 7/31.
CITY OF LOST CHILDREN:  This is a beautiful surrealistic film, I might just get around to watching it again.  Highly recommended if you like arty surrealistic sci-fi.  Avaialable until 7/31.
LEPRECHAUN 5: This is the one where he goes to the hood.  This has to be just terrible. Available until 7/22.
TOXIC AVENGER 2-4: These are still avialable until 6/30.

What about the rest of you?  If you get this service, do you see anything you're really looking forward to?

I catch Fearnet frequently but seldom end up finishing movies.  I was watching Dentist 2 about a few weeks ago.  I still like that movie.  Its one of few that actually makes me cringe at the violence.

Someone told me once that Eraserhead was the scariest movie he had ever seen.  I WAS going to see it before I heard that but when I tell people a movie is the "scariest I've ever seen" it's a warning not a recommendation.  Is it really THAT scary?  I still kinda want to see it.

I didn't really like Oldboy, it was frustrating to me and I figured out the "twist" ending way too early as a joke but then realized it was true.  That doesn't mean I won't end up watching Lady Vengeance though.

Not scary like horror-film scary.  Disturbing, deep down in your soul.  Also I'll point out men tend to like it more than women; I think the unloved mutant baby puts the ladies off, plus the woman is the villain and abandons her child.  I'd still recommend almost anyone see it, if you can tolerate something out of the ordinary, but be prepared for a very different experience.  I may have a review of it up later today that I'll link to for you.

ERASERHEAD is like watching somebody's nightmare.  It's very surreal and has disturbing images and sounds.

I bought INLAND EMPIRE a few months ago.  This is probably the least straightforward of Lynch's films.  I watched it only once so far, and I suspect I will need about 5 viewings to develop a decent idea of what it's all about.

That didn't help.  Now I'm more afraid of seeing it AND I want to watch it more!

Funny, I have not seen Eraserhead... I think the story was about a guys denial for being a father, or something depressing...

I'd assume its something like Jacob's Ladder and Forbidden Zone, or Eraserhead actually inspired such films...

If you want to see it, I'll watch it with you... :)

If you're into cannibalism or some nudity and bondage, you might like 2001 Maniacs. Also, it has Robert Englund in it as the main 'maniac' leader. He was the only good part of this film other than the amazing conclusion...I'd rate it a 3 out of 5 blood droplets.  :tongueout:

ERASERHEAD is like NOTHING else actually....like the Burgomiester sez...it's the closest thing to a filmed nightmare. Surreal,disturbing,...just plain weird. The Dead Kennedys reference it in the song 'Too Drunk Too F#ck' with the lyric-"-you bawl like the baby in Eraserhead!" And,man, that deformed little salamnder looking thing whines like a sick cat!  :buggedout:

Well, here's the review... way more than you ever wanted to know about ERASERHEAD: http://366weirdmovies.com/22-eraserhead-1977/.

And Skull, I hardly even know you, but I guess I can watch it with you if you want...

I've seen Eraserhead before and I loved it in spite of being weirded out by it.  I was watching it the other night On Demand but was too sleepy to finish it.  I'd totally forgotten about the "Oh, you are sick" scene!  It scared the crap out of me with the sudden cut to the sick baby but then made me laugh at Henry's line.  Such a jarring moment!

OK I watched Eraserhead. Phew! It wasn't scary!  I didn't even think the baby was ugly, it looked like a cute lil brontosaurus.  The heaven song was a little haunting though.

I'm glad I read the review after I watched it because when it was over I thought "Aw man! I wasn't smart enough for that movie!" because I really still don't know what it's about, but after reading the review I don't think you're supposed to.

It would have been scary if the mother had to breastfeed that baby around the clock every 2-3 hours.

Seen it with Paquita... :)

Just as I thought, its a typical dream within a dream story...

Ok, Jacob's Ladder and Forbidden Zone were inspired from Eraserhead.

I could understand Eraserhead is ground breaking for 1977 and why Stanley Kubrick loves the movie since is closely similar to 2001... *without the classical music, the colors and crazy HAL*... I also wonder if 2001 had a 20 page script, after all there wasnt much dialoge in that story either... :)

Paquita (my love) the intent of Eraserhead is not to outsmart you but show you a visual nightmare. This is why David Lynch keeps saying that nobody has figured out his movie because the design is not supose to tell you what the story is about but makes think of your own conclusions of the story's intent.

Similar to abstract art.

Ok, Jacob's Ladder and Forbidden Zone were inspired from Eraserhead.

But ERASERHEAD was inspired by EL TOPO and ORPHEUS... among others.

Rewatching Toxic Avengers 2&3, as I haven't seen them since USA Up All Night showed them way back when I was about 8 years old in '92.  Also rewatching Leprechaun 5&6, cause he goes to the Hood.  And as we all know, Leprechauns and rappers go really well together. :teddyr:

I'm going to recommend against picking Miike's ONE MISSED CALL... talky and overlong.

Also, I decided to skip INLAND EMPIRE because I didn't realize it was over 3 hours long  :buggedout:.  I'll get it on DVD sometime instead so I can rewind and fast-forward easily.

I'll probably check out LADY VENGEANCE next.

Watched Eraserhead.  I liked it, but my mom, who happened to be here, well, didn't, to say the least.
