Title: Spamvasion
Post by: Psycho Circus on July 05, 2009, 03:07:25 PM
It seems we are being overrun by "guest" spammers, spouting on about car finance which is preceeded by some goofy cryptic message. It's more than just one irritating jerk and they're popping up on threads more than 6 years old! Go away!

We must fight back people.

If we set up like this (if anyone has any of those green things around to block) we can sit back and shoot them to death.

I've removed about 9 of them this afternoon.  But, I can't be on this site all day.  Hopefully Andrew can block some IPs.

I have some of those green shield things, but we can't shoot up through them, they're rented. .

I know who's doing it, the terrorists! They learn the secret that the key to toppling the free world is to take out the Bad Movies forum. I say we invade immediately. There has got to be a bar, tavern, pub, or some eatery near by that we can claim was hiding weapons of mass consumption.

I just reported 2 of them!  We are being invaded!!  Tighten the border security!  Circus, we need more than Chuck Norris, we also need Ash and John McClane!  Perhaps a couple of those sharks from Deep Blue Sea...

But seriously, what's with this increase in spam all of a sudden?

Odds are the searchbots they use discovered the forum. That's why most forum sites or places you can leave comments get hit with spam.

This forum has the CAPTCHA feature to stop spammers.
It looks like the spammers have a bot that's able to get past the CAPTCHA.
They're rare, but not unheard of.

The only way to stop them is to block their IP address and report them to their service provider.

The people who do this need to have their computers smashed with sledgehammers, their cars crushed in a compactor, and their homes burned to the ground.

It's possible that someone has finally come up with a working attack for SMF's captcha.  What is more likely is that the system was somehow using human interaction to solve the captchas.  I've seen that before.  A porn site or warez site requires the user to solve a captcha to get the goodies.  Only thing is - they're not solving the site's captcha, the person is solving a captcha from another site or forum so that the porn/spam/warez site can post a spam message.

Annoying, eh?  Anyway, there's an IP ban in place now, and all of the spam messages were coming from the same IP address.

Is SMF made using PHP? I helped a friend implement a keyword list type of anti-spam for PHPbb and it worked pretty well. It was a much smaller forum though, so the keywords weren't being used in common conversation.

Why do I get the feeling that dispite the fact that Andrew blocked that IP address for the spam generated already, we are going to get more soon? I fear they won't give up and will just use another IP address to start over again.

Probably not, , ,they're likely spamming hundreds of sites, most of which have not, and will not catch on or block an IP. They will eventually, but not because Andrew alone blocked their address.

Probably not quite the right place to mention it, but I did try and log in off and on the last month or so and everynow and then it tells me I can't post because my IP address has been blocked as 'spam is known to come from this account'.  Unless I've been hacked [and as far as I'm aware I don't think I have] I wonder are my occasional posts that bad they've been mistaken as spam?

Anyways, if I wait a few hours or days I can usually get on but everynow and then I'd want to post but can't because I've been banned...

Anyways, no biggie, since I lurk mostly these days instead of post anything of worth: usually I'm full of gin or bourbon when I look this site up.

You might want to post that on the "Trouble Tickets" thread, and maybe Andrew will see it.  The IP you're posting from now isn't banned.  Do you use multiple computers to log on?

If it happens again I'll post it on trouble tickets, the last half dozen times or so it's worked fine.  I do use different computers every now and then, though it has happened on this current computer a few times.

It's probably for the best: I'm sure I wouldn't have added anything of particular value anyways!

Looks like someone has decided to give us a new helping of SPAM.  Like I need cheap knock off items.
