Title: Toys of yer childhood
Post by: RCMerchant on August 25, 2009, 09:19:24 PM
Do you feel nostalgia for some of the stuff you played with as a kid. I sure do.

Here are a few I enjoyed...

Monster Old Maid Card Game.

Yeh...it was just Old Maid...but hte cards were soooo cool! Me and my brother Mike usta play this in an old junk yard in back of the cornfiield . Why we played it there? I dunno. It was our card playin' spot. And drink RC Cola or Nehi.

CREEPY CRAWLERS-
You took some goop and poured it into a mold...and made rubber bugs. Fun. That was about 1969.

BARNABUS COLLINS GAME-
Truth to tell...I don't remeber how this game was played. I DO remeber it came with 4 set of plastic vampire teeth---and we just played with them!!!  :teddyr:

Johnny West!!
He was great! A little sturdier than GI JOE...and I had Geronimo,General Custer,Bart,Sitting Bull...I bought a Geronimo 2 years ago offa ebay. Good for shooting at with yer BB Gun!

I hadda lotta AFI and Mego monster figures. DRACULA was a favorite! (of course!)

It's amazing what 10 years did. When I had GI JOES...(and I had a lot of them!) they looked like this..

In the 80's...they shrunk...and NOW they are big again...but so much cooler! You can get Nazi, Russian,Vietnamese,Japanese...GI Joes from all sortsa military backrounds! Boy...I wish I was still a kid!

I had Johnny and Jane and Geronimo,  also several horses and all their gear.  (The jointed ones were the coolest - but fragile)  Still have them!

The old G.I. Joe's from the '70s.

And View Mater - those were the coolest things ever!

I used to build a lot of models too, mostly space ships, but a lot of military stuff as well.

Kind of makes you wonder about the imagination of kids today.  We could spend hours and hours just imagining stuff wtih our toys.  Today, kids have got high-def video games, and they can't even pay attention to them, they've got to maintain a steady stream of prattle with their prattling friends over their bleutooth headsets.  And when they go someplace, do they daydream about fantastic stuff?  Nope, steady stream of prattle over the cell phone.

I'm nearly 42 and I still have my first toy ~ a white teddy bear that my Dad bought me when my folks adopted me. He's a little worn and his eyes have been replaced by buttons but he's still with me.  :teddyr:

PS: His name is "Toddy" ~ I could never pronounce "teddy" as a kid. Dunno why.

Let's see:
I had the Lone Ranger and Tonto 10' action figures that came with Silver and Scout.

I remember playing the original "Operation" (damn them they changed the box art!)

I had a talking Bugs Bunny doll that I wish I never gave to my little cousin in the 80's..it was sentimental for some personal reasons but I relented to the new generation in my family and she (my cousin) loved it till it went to pieces.

The Aurora model kits.

Sorry and Monopoly from Milton Bradley. The list goes on...

I also grew up in the 80's and had tons of GI Joes, Transformers, Go-Bots, etc...
In the mid 80's I got really big into He-Man toys.
These were my two favorite He-Man playsets:

The Slime Pit
(http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/3974/slimepitevilhemanplayse.jpg) (http://img35.imageshack.us/i/slimepitevilhemanplayse.jpg/)

Snake Mountain
(http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/7007/snakemountainhemanmotul.jpg) (http://img21.imageshack.us/i/snakemountainhemanmotul.jpg/)

Snake Mountain had the microphone that you could use to make your voice sound evil.

I was also heavy into M.A.S.K. toys.

Action figures, for sure. Anybody else have Battlestar Galactica figures? I've still got a Cylon just like this one. My daughter sometimes plays with it.

And I used to have a bunch of Fisher-Price Adventure People sets. They were aimed at the kids who outgrew Little People.

And speaking of Little People, I had quite a few of them, back when they were smaller and simpler. The Play Family Village saw a lot of use.

The three I showed above were the three I actually had and ripped off of those oh so cool cards they came on  :bluesad:; I remember buying the Alpha-7 figure on the card out of the bargain bin at TWO GUYS probably 1969?  I was very young, but I know I paid a whopping 49 cents, plus whatever tax would have been then (like maybe 2 or 3 cents  :teddyr:).  I have found a few of these thru collecting, have Orbitron and Xodiac, but of my original 3, have only been able to replace Electron+ ... I was lucky to find my example with his helmet, pistol, and most of his original "glaze" intact... here's pix from online:
(http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff259/allhallowsday/COLORFORMSelectron01.jpg)(http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff259/allhallowsday/COLORFORMSorbitron01.jpg)(http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff259/allhallowsday/COLORFORMSxodiac01.jpg)

Carded figures are extremely sought after and command mansion mortgage payments; the little pieces are important, too.

I remember seeing these at a Sears Outlet sometime in the 70's, but never bought any. I distinctly remember this guy from Neptune.

I had tons of Mego super heroes, Planet of the Apes (I still have the War Wagon/and the Tree House). My big GI Joes are not in good shape anymore, but because my brother and I each got one of everything I still have 2 jeeps, and 2 submarines.

My favorite card collection was Topps Weird Wheels, painted in glorious Big Daddy Ed Roth style by Norm Saunders. These were great monster cards.

Boy did I love action figures. Being a child of the late 80s, early 90s, there were some interesting figures I had at one point or another.

I remember this generation of GiJoes, and still think this was the worst codename ever:

My friend had the below, I had the van [though couldn't find the picture]

Still the blimp was a damn cool toy, when it worked that is:

Dinoriders rocked my world too:

There was one period where they had Toxic Avengers action figures to coincide with the animated tv show:

Lego was huge for me.  My personal fav was the Robin Hood series:

Robots were fun.  Transformers of course were huge around my time.

Voltron of course was pretty cool too:

Movie and comic based action figures were big with me too.  The original star wars figures were basically my stalwart play-thing in my early childhood.

QuoteCREEPY CRAWLERS-

Yeah, they rereleased them when I was younger...  1990-92ish?  I made a ton of the things.  Still remember the theme, sort of - "You can be a little creep without being bad!"

Growing up in the 1980s and 90s, I shared a lot of what has been mentioned..  Transformers, GI Joes, Turtles figures, etc.

Some of my more unique ones: a Godzilla figure (quite accurate too) that had an infrared sensor and would scream the Godzilla roar whenever someone walked in front of him.  Still have him, he's on a shelf above me.

I also had a couple of Terminator 2 action figures - they're actually quite good figures.  Only had two, the triple armed (swappable arms, great idea) damaged Arnold and the T-800 exoskeleton.

I was also really into the Kenner Aliens toys...

They're actually quite nice designs, on the whole.  Props to whoever did them.  I had every Alien (though not all the marines - I subbed in GI Joes, and all the humans were fodder in my battles anyway) except the swarm/wasp alien.

I'm not even positive it ever got a US release.  Never saw it in a store here.

Good stuff.

Gotta love action figures. I had competely forgotten that Dennis Nedry was a muscular, gun-toting commando type. I'd have thought an action figure of Wayne Knight armed with pie and a shaving cream can would have been a huge seller. :teddyr:

No kidding. My parents also kept the Little People toys around for neices, nephews, grandkids, etc. I had the village and the farm, and they saw use from the 70s right through the 90s. Funny how the village stood up to my friends and I for years, little visiting cousins for years after that, and my brother's kids had the thing falling apart after a few visits. Thing stayed in mint condition for about 20 years, and they managed to break it. Those kids had a talent.

Wow.. how could you break that stuff?  It's all pretty much just one or two huge pieces of plastic.  That's be like snapping a Duplo block in half...

Hey, speaking of such, did you have the bridge that connects the two sections of the town?  I remember a couple times I'd disconnect the bridge from one part of the town and noticed it would "swing" rather nicely, so I'd set the action figures in front of its path and hit them like baseballs!  Hehe!

:P

On mine, the bridge was an integral part. The whole thing stayed in one piece with the two halves hinged off the bridge. The hinges were where it got broken. The two halves were pretty much indestructible, but they no longer folded neatly for storage after the nephews got at it. It was just two discrete pieces that detached from each other, and a bridge that was kind of on its own.

I'm pretty sure that's the same as the one I had as a kid. The bridge had a stoplight on it, right?

Yep, you turned a little wheel that made the colours change. That was one of the best features for me. Thinking back, I can remember that traffic light was pretty cool for being so simple. Hard to say which I liked better, that or the mail slots at every address with hard plastic letters that not only fit the slots but also stacked in the back of the mail truck. Then again, the fire siren was cool, and the working hoist in the garage and the jail cell that opened and closed by turning a knob on the outside. Great toy.

Most of my Beetlejuice toys were sold behind my back.

I think I was about 12-14ish. I'd started high school and moved in with my mom, and my dad went and sold tons of my old toy collections to this family. The thing was, he used to take me out to stores and buy me loads of stuff, telling me to keep them (preferably boxed too) 'cause they'll all be worth money when your older. WTF?

This, coming from a man that blows nearly $1000 on horseracing or motown '45s, who then will turn round to me and say, "Oh, I could've given you some of that son. Oh well."

MADBALLS! I had almost all of them, I miss them too.

Madballs? Never heard of them. That's NOT exactly true. We were like brothers.

Dude, those are BACK!  Yes, they're selling a new gen of Madballs today (or at least they were back when I worked at Toys R Us.)  A lot of them are repeats of the first series with some updates, but they also really weird ones.  One actually grossed ME out a little bit, basically it was a squeeze ball with some plastic inside (you know, you squeeze the ball and the plastic bulges out like a bubble?) and it was made to look like it was coming out of the Mad's head.  It had red liquid inside and bunch of plastic spiders, like you know, the Mad had blood and spiders in his brain!

It was actually kind of creepy...

Can't believe no one posted about these yet...

Anyone remember MUSCLE Things?!?

They were small (think about an inch so) plastic pink (and later, other colors) figures.  The back story behind them was they were aliens who came here to invade earth and wrestle each other or some such.  The story wasn't really that well developed but what was awesome was there was SO FREAKING MANY of them.  (Think about 250 or so.)

I had dozens of these things.  I loved playing around with them, especially this one that looked a bit like a monkey wearing a jet pack.

In addition to having them fight each other, I also used them a lot for zombie games.  I was a big zombie nut as a kid, so whenever I played a "zombies rising from the dead" type thing, I used them as stand ins for zombies because I didn't have enough G.I. Joes or Star Wars figures to fill the role.

Ahhh, memories.

OH YEAH! Those things were awesome. When I was a kid I didn`t know they were from an anime called Ultimate Muscle: The Kinnikuman Legacy, they were released in North America as M.U.S.C.L.E.

Yeah, I think your right about the Mad Ball remakes, I seen them around. Cool.

Yup, I remember M.U.S.C.L.E.

I think my 1st 2 Star Wars figures back in the early 80's were Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

I had the At-At as well! It was big.

You used to play with an alien commode with a giant tongue? What were you supposed to do with it, sit your sisters Barbies down on it and enjoy her screams of disgust?

Gnip Gnop.  Kinda neat game where you shot balls back and forth to each other.

Also we had a bunch of Finger Pops.
