I'm willing to bet there are alot of people, even hardcore horror movie fans, who don't like this movie. Not unlike "the Baby" or a Todd Solondz experience it's what I call a "mental Texas Chainsaw Massacre". Hey we wanted gore, not ....to be creeped out by perverts!! AND it's pretty gorey too! rape, gender bending, insanity, May-December romances, more insanity. EVen with it's cliche scenerio of kids at camp with a killer on the loose, it really stands out from the pack. I liked this better than bigger budget more crtically lauded 80's horrors like "the burning". ending is overrated 5/5

The ending was awesome!!!!!!! :tongueout:
I thought it was of a piece with the rest of the fim but nothing so special
I saw this about 6 months ago in its entirety on youtube. (dunno if it's still up). I watched it in the dark at about 3am and the ending s**t me up!
I thought the film was good overall though. one thing that seemed slightly odd is how young the kids seemed. in the average teen slasher you seem to get 15-19yr olds getting the chop, in this one the kids don't look much over 12-13...
Haven't seen Sleepaway Camp 1, but have seen parts 2 and 3. I like them, especially the scene in which Angela 'kills' Freddy and Jason while dressed as Leatherface. I think Suncoast has the dvd for Sleepaway Camp. I just don't know the price.
I prefer "Teenage Wasteland" to the first two. Decent enough flicks tho' especially when compared to today's glossy tripe with all the loud fake jumps they use every 5 secs.
Didn't really care for the first one, it was like an R rated version of the Bad News Bears. But the ending was pretty sensational, I'll say that for it. Actually preferred both of the sequels, part 3 being my "favorite", though I wasn't all that crazy for any of them.
I don't get the fascination with the ending of the first one. I saw it coming a mile away and I never see it coming a mile away
I really enjoy this one, yeah, the acting's not the greatest but its still a fun movie. The ending surprised me when I first saw it & I consider it 1 of the better twist endings to a movie.
Part 2 & 3 were ok at best & the less said about Return To Sleepaway Camp...the better.

I am curious as to what tipped you off? I don't remember the movie that well, but I remember being very suprised at the end. And I normally pick up on that stuff pretty quickly.
"Look at all that fresh young chicken....where I come from we call 'em baldies."
I was so glad when the chef got his comuppence. And Judy, what a b***h! The curling iron scene was pretty cool. She deserved it (actually most of the victims in this movie got what they deserved). One scene I'm a little confused about is when the group of kids get axed to death. The councellor comes back to find them dead, but it kinda looks like somebody spread a pile of garbage in some sleeping bags. The shot is not very clear. Anybody else notice that?
I love this flick. Me & my one friend Nicole have a bad habit of just randomly making that weird open-mouthed wide-eyed freak-out face that Angela shows off without the slightest movement during the film's twist finale. Such a messed up flick. I got to see it on the big screen recently thanks to a monthly cult movie double feature series that recently started up around here, caught it on a double bill with Cannibal Holocaust. It was kind of amusing: everyone was laughing and yelling jokes at the screen and having a crazy fun time during Sleepaway, then about 10 minutes into Holocaust you could hear a freakin' pin drop. It's hard to make jokes during that flick. Not impossible, but dang hard.

wow, what a night out
I Like The First Two But I Think The Third One Deeded Some Work
I Never Got Around To Seeing RETURN TO SLEEPAWAY CAMP , But I've Heard Nothing But Bad Things About It
The ending scared the bejeebies out of me! Its the best of the three. Part II and part III are not great but laughable and entertaining.
so the girl was a boy. THAT is what scared everyone?
this is something you've never seen before? in the age of the internet I find that every hard to believe

to me the entire unexpected full-on garishness of the ending is what I found freaky. the gender-bending aspect was not what scared me. that look on her face ant the general horrific ambience of that final scene is what I found pretty disturbing.
(spoiler there?, lol)
it had been spoiled by everyone including me. yeah it was a macabre ending. there was so much weird stuff in that movie, begining with the Mom when she would touch her face and go "oh dear"
This film is filled with lots of high weirdness. The mother's peculiar dialogue, the plethora of too-tight too-short shorts of the male characters, the unstopping stream of profanity from children, the homoerotic subtext, creepy pedophiles, and not the least the shocking images of the ending. If you had told me immediately afterward that this was a lost John Waters film, I would have believed it.
I laughed the hardest though at the police officer's mustache :teddyr: :teddyr: :teddyr: Certainly it was the most unconvincing mustache in the entire history of cinema.
I did notice that the camp owner was the hunter from the beginning of Just Before Dawn, who actually got away in that one.

Did you notice when the police officer comes back out the door the mustache looks like it's halfway off? :bouncegiggle:
And yeah, the camp owner is Mike Kellin from JBD. Noticed that too.
Another film for which I wrote a "dumb film" review:
