Title: Netflix boss says DVD has two years left
Post by: Rev. Powell on October 10, 2009, 04:59:30 PM
"The days of building your precious DVD collection may be coming to an end sooner than you think. If Netflix CEO Reed Hastings' comments are any guide, the DVD era may be set to come to a rather abrupt halt...

Strangely, Hastings didn't note what would supplant DVD as the company's major movie format, but considering that Blu-ray remains a niche product, with 10 percent penetration or lower among most consumers, he's probably talking about streaming."

Not sure what you guys think of this, but I think he's misjudging the market.  I'm not interested in buying any $99 box to stream movies.  That's like asking me to buy an extra DVD player to watch movies I rent from one particular outlet.  (Yes, I know there will be cheaper alternatives, but my point is I'm offended by the business model.  I already have a DVD plyer and I want to continue using it).

It's a logical progression from DVD to streams but who knows

Screw this guy, I'm carrying on regardless. Everything I want is already on DVD anyway, I ain't interested in new films.

Something scary in how fast technology is changing. Vinyl records lasted half a century as king of the jungle, twenty years VHS reigned, DVD may not make it on top for ten. Personally my inner Dale Gribble thinks "they" are just changing technology all the time to get our money even faster. I know Illuminati when I smell it...

I don't really see it catching on.  The technology is already available and I don't see any large scale movement away from DVD's.  People are just extremely satisfied with DVD's:  The players are cheap, the movies are cheap (dirt cheap if you buy all your movies used like I do), and the picture and sound quality are excellent.  And there are a ton of problems with downloading:  Lose your whole movie collection when the hard drive crashes, how many days to re-download?  No competition between individual retailers, no used market, the need to repurchase everything again (due to a ton of digital rights management issues that would come up if whole populations were to begin transferring their DVD's to hard dirves).  And last but not least, the majority of the world doesn't have nice fast internet speeds like we do in the West, so downloading a movie could take days.  Obviously DVD's would still need to be available for them, so these people wouldn't even have the option of forcing it out of the market.  Assuming they could - they'd need to sell the equipment through the stores that would lose a ton of business if DVD's went obsolete.

Well he could have a point.  Simply because Netflix is now streaming not only to computers but also Xbox and certain TVs.  However, their selection, although in the thousands, is limited.  I don't think DVD is going anywhere that soon.

I still buy vinyl!  2-6 bucks for a record at Value Village.  I've found Sgt. Peppers, Bat Out of Hell, Thriller, a Bruce Springsteen collection...  It's not dead at all!
