Title: Mill Creek 50 Movie Packs
Post by: SPazzo on October 17, 2009, 06:02:15 PM
So, I've never bought on of these, and there's a store here selling the "Chilling Classics" 50 Movie Pack for $14.99 (Canadian).  Is it worth it?  And how is the quality on the prints?

I think I already own one movie in that set, Werewolf in a Girl's Dormitory.

Thanks.

They're usually worth the money.  Most of the prints are pretty poor quality - it's fairly obvious most are copied from old VHS tapes or something similar.  Because of this they're also almost always full frame, regardless of the film's original aspect ratio.

However, they're still worth it because of the cheap price, and usually the movies are still in watchable condition.  Chilling Classics has enough worthwhile films to be worth picking up.  In my opinion, the best set they've released is the Martial Arts 50 pack.  There's a half dozen true classics of the genre, another dozen entertaining chop socky efforts, and several films so bad they're funny..  And like 15 or 20 you should completely ignore.

Prints are terrible, but price can't be beat! Use a Mill Creek pack to sample a lot of films you might not otherwise see.  Per disc it's cheaper than renting them anyway, and you never have to return the copy!  In the unlikely event you REALLY like one, you can always upgrade that single disc.

The Martial Arts 50 pack is GREAT if you like Shaw Bros/Golden Harvest type kung fu from the lates 70s/early 80s with lots of fighting and terrible dubbing and foley work.  There's even a bit of blaxploitation thrown in for variety.  KUNG FU ARTS, NINJA CHAMPION and BLACK COBRA alone were well worth the purchase for me, and I still have 40 or so cheesy classics left to savor!

Even if you like 5 or 10 out of 50, $14.99 isn't bad.

The 100 horror pack is also pretty good.

I own most of the Mill Creek 50 movie packs.  I disagree that the prints are terrible.  Most of them are VHS quality or better.  I find there are about 1 or 2 terrible prints (bad picture, bad sound, or both) in each set.  But for the most part, the movies are very watchable.  Just don´t expect sharp, digital quality like you´d get from movies that were in theaters 6 months ago.  The quality far exceeds what I would expect for the price.  And you´ll be surprised from time to time with movies that are VERY good quality (I was surprised by the quality of many movies in the Mystery Classics set) and there are even a few widescreen movies hidden in these packs.

Just beware of the WARRIORS pack . . . the movies are watchable, but the color is often faded . . . those damned Italian muscle man movies!

I've seen these packs at my local Shopko for a while.  100 Horrors Movie, 100 Mysteries, 100 Chillers, 100 Monsters, and much more.  Most of them are just 14 bucks, so I should at some point invest in one of these packs.

I really enjoy these. The best ones I've liked aside from the aforementioned Martial Arts pack were the Mystery and Science Fiction packs. The Mystery 100 pack (or the Mystery 50 pack combined with the Dark Crimes 50 pack - same thing essentially) has loads of great murder mysteries/film noirs/crime thrillers from the 30-50s while the sci-fi pack has loads of weird fantasy stuff on it to like several Sons of Hercules films, etc.. Had lots of fun watching those.

I've gotten a couple of these myself and they are worth it. If you love bad movies then these are perfect cause they are often filled with some of the worst. If Dr. Forrester had used several Mill Creek 50 packs instead of films, he might of achived his goal of driving Joel then later Mike insane.
