Title: Oscar winning actors/actresses and some of the CRAPPY movies they were in...
Post by: retrorussell on October 27, 2009, 03:28:11 AM
Don't ya just love it when an actor/actress picks up an Oscar or two (or more), but somehow gets suckered into a REALLY bad flick (sometimes because they need the money)?

One example:
Ernest Borgnine, who won an Academy Award for MARTY in 1955, went on to star in some really, really suck-o flicks in the 70s and 80s.. Super Fuzz was one of the dumbest I remember going to the theater to see.  He basically mailed in his performance, as a bumbling police sergeant dealing with a super-powered rookie cop.  I was about 10 when I saw it for the first time, and even then I thought it was pretty stupid.

Well, later on he appeared in Deadly Blessing, which was Deadly Dull.  How the mighty have fallen...

Oh, come one, Super fuzz is awesome. :teddyr:

Anyway, there is Jürgen Prochnow. He was in Das boot (which he didn't win any awards for, but whatever) and then DNA and House of the dead.
UPDATE: Just noticed that the thread's title was OSCAR winning actors/actresses. Jürgen didn't win an oscar.

* James Stewart won for THE PHILADELPHIA STORY and later appeared in AIRPORT 1977

* Joe Pesci won for GOODFELLAS and later appeared in 8 HEADS IN A DUFFEL BAG

Speaking of Borgnine, I recently watched "The Neptune Factor."  The cover art is extremely exciting, but the movie is a boring undersea adventure with lots of shots of real fish and eels (in an aquarium) made to look like they're giant monsters.  Remember the MST3K episode of "The Lost Continent" and ROCK CLIMBING?  I felt the same away about watching these people motoring around in a mini-submersible for an hour.

By the end of the film I was begging, begging for something interesting to happen.  Anything.  And I don't mean a "giant lobster" walking at the camera.

They were going for a realistic science fiction adventure in the vein of "Fantastic Voyage."  They completely fouled it up.

AIRPORT is excellent, but James Stewart isn't in it.  However, he is in AIRPORT 1977 (actually AIRPORT '77) , which is crappy.

MICHAEL CAINE won the best supporting actor for HANNAH AND HER SISTERS but was unable to accept the award in person as he was on location filming JAWS: THE REVENGE...

He also won for THE CIDER HOUSE RULES.  20 years earlier he starred in BEYOND THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE...

1980.
I'm sure some of the AIRPORTS could be construed as unintenitional comedies.

Let's not forget his performance (and silly wig and costume) in CLASH OF THE TITANS.

Shelley Winters, who won the Oscar for THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK and A PATCH OF BLUE, also appeared in the awful FANNY HILL (which, admittedly, had some great nude scenes, fortunately none involving Mrs. Winters).

Clint Eastwood's first speaking role in a film was as a lab technician in "Revenge of the Creature". He was uncredited.

Yeah, Frogs really sucked big time.  Ray Millard sunk to a low that time.

I am not sure if he won any awards, but I do know that Brad Pitt has been nominated for some.  He was in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Inglorious Bastards, and the Ocean Eleven series, but then he was also in Cool World where apparently he did not even know the basics of acting.

Ben Kingsley won an Oscar for Gandhi, and has since been nominated three more times.

Yet, somehow, he's also in The Love Guru, A Sound of Thunder and BloodRayne of all things.

I think a lot of British actors have a more utilitarian view of acting than many major American actors.  They say, "I'm an actor, therefore I act".

Milland was also in THE thing wiTH TWO HEADS around the same time, where he had to act while pretending to be attached to Rosey Grier's body.

When A.I.P. realized how ridiculous all this was they made a smart move by altering this enough to make this a, uhum, black comedy/horror rather than a straight horror film.

Rosey's girlfriend has the best line:" Have you got two of anything else?"

That's awesome!  That should have been inspiration for a porn version of that film, entitled, The Thing With Two Heads And Two Schlongs.

Glenn Ford won the Oscar for The Blackboard Jungle, then 26 years later or so starred in Happy Birthday To Me, a seriously stupid film.
