Title: How do you arrange your DVDs/VHS collection?
Post by: Saucerman on November 09, 2009, 05:03:49 PM
For the last year, I've had my rather extensive B-movie DVD collection contained in a pair of briefcase-sized CD binders, since they took up less space then several shelves' worth of DVD cases and at college, space was at a premium.

Today I put all my DVDs back in their cases, save for ones where the cases were lost or too damaged to use.

So now I'm staring at several stacks of DVDs which have collapsed into a pile roughly the size of an unrolled sleeping bag.  And I feel like some organization is in order.  I'm home sick from work (nothing too serious), so I have all night to work on this.

How do you arrange your DVDs/VHSes? Alphabetical by title? By director? Themes?

I put all mine in alphabetical order and they are just stacked up from the floor next to the TV. I don't have any shelves or holders and I'm too lazy to buy any, so they just have to balance nicely.

Along these lines, does anyone know of a free program out there that will let me log film info into it and then cross reference with tags, like HORROR, AL ADAMSON, BIKINI, or the like? I'd like to think Office could do it, but I'm awful at figuring these things out.

I arrange mine by the alphabet, but then you get into the 50 movie sets and the like, so those get lumped into vague catagories, like Mill Creek, Retro-Media, Brentwood, TGG and then into things like "mostly horror", "Kinda action-ish" and so on.

I got a DVD storage unit, which is full, and the rest are on a bookshelf.  The ones in the storage unit are alphabetized, and the ones in the bookshelf are not.  For multi-movie sets, I go by the name of the set, or else the name of the first movie if it's a double feature.  Not a perfect system, but it's an imperfect world.

I put the ones with cooler titles/box art first and the uglier ones later.  Then, if someone is looking at my movie collection they'll think I'm cool.  :teddyr:

Seriously though, I put them alphabetically.

I have 1,144 movies (over 900 on DVD). So, all my dvd's are listed alphabetically - its much easier that way for me. I have 2 shelves (about 5 feet tall) that are filled while my 3rd cabinet shelf has only 2 small shelves left before its filled.

The remaining VHS tapes (most are of movies that either ain't on DVD yet) I have are in smaller cabinets near my TV.

Yes...I do get a workout if I get a movie or 2 that begin with the letter A & then I have to proceed with moving all the rest of the movies down just to make them fit on the shelves. But its fun.

My DVDs are arranged alphabetically by title on 12 bookcases.  I had most of them listed in an Excel spreadsheet, but I fried my hard drive a few months ago and lost the file.

I don't really arrange them in any way.  I just put in a spot where there is room.  THe only DVDs I arrange are my anime season sets by alphabetical order above my TV.

I have a convoluted system that only I seem to understand. It confuses my wife, who is always asking me to get her a DVD, because she doesn't know where it is.

I have four main groups: movies, TV, American animation and anime. Each category is in alphabetical order on the shelf. With the movie section, I also take certain discs and group them separately from the rest, such as all my Godzilla films or all the Midnite Movies discs and so on. Multi-movie sets are also in their own section, as they're impossible to group alphabetically with the others. What really confuses my wife is that from time to time, I have to move things around as the collection grows. What is on one shelf now, may be moved three shelves down by this time next year.

I have 3 racks that hold 200 DVDs, all in alphabetical order. the VHS are stacked along the walls and to say the least exist as my wallpaper. i don't have much room as i still live at home so my room is packed with all kinds of fun crap.

Whatever way they end up.   I don't really buy DVDs much anymore.   I feel like an outcast on this thread.  :bluesad:

Just like me!  It's good to know there is some just as unorganized with their DVDs like me.

Well, I ended up doing rough categories: "Kaiju," "Slashers," "50s sci-fi," "80s cheese" and "miscellaneous."  Which means Casablanca, The Untouchables, and the few other mainstream, non-horror/sci-fi/fantasy, "good" movies I own are mixed in with The Robot versus the Aztec Mummy, Sex Kittens Go To College, and Legend of the Chupacabra.

My DVDs are arranged by earliest release year in alphabetical order stored in six IKEA Billy shelves. Works best for me in finding movies.
I also got all my movies listed at IMDb "my movies" under my account. It's very helpful for me in arranging my collection (I can display my IMDb movie list in different ways) plus I get all the movie info only one mouse click away.
For a test I sorted out titles in my collection that got less than a 5.0 rating at IMDb and stored them in a seperate shelf. As it turns out most of these titles are actually movies I rarely watch.
And yeah, got extra shelfs for my box sets and Blu-ray discs but I'm already running out of space. Time to get rid of some of those under 5.0 rated movies

I wont get rid of the ones I like. Most are blind buys/stinkers I will never watch again. They will have to go.

Movies I watch frequently go on the bookcases, ones I watch occasionally get the drawers of the coffee table and those I rarely watch or those I hate get the inside of a huge trunk I have.. That's how I organize.   I would like to alphabetize them but its just too big of a job and im lazy.

I have all of my DVD's (and CD's) alphabetized throughout 5 book shelves that are about 6 feet tall each.

I have a pretty huge DVD collection (close to a thousand) so if I didn't alphabetize them I wouldn't be able to find anything.

I had kicked around the idea at one point of organizing them into genres, but that gets problematic with some movies that are hybrids of particular genres.

I used to do categories, but I have one of the OCD-addled minds that gets crazy with the hairsplitting and I drove myself crazy going "well, this is nazisploitation, kung-fu, AND zombie horror... which section should I put it in? should I start a new category for naziploitation kung-fu zombie movies? wait!!! if i do that, this will be the only movie there! that's stupid!!! hmmmm... maybe i should..." and so on and so on. Eventually I redid the whole mess and just slapped everything together and then went in alphabetical order, though not STRICT alphabetical order (the idea that I'd have to put Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 BEFORE Hellraiser on the shelf galls me, so I put sequels with one another, regardless of titular eccentricities... TAKE THAT, BRIDE OF REANIMATOR!!!)

At our old house, I built a built-in pine bookcase covering a whole wall. Half was designed to accommodate books and half was built to hold movies. We filled both sides immediately. When we moved a few years ago, we opted to store books and movies in different rooms, and bought multiple flat-pack shelving units for both. We have a wall of books in the office and a wall of movies and CDs in the rec room.

As for the order, I used to organize them any way that made sense. Genres and subgenres together, new movies separate from old movies, movie series (such as Godzilla) in their own sections, and certain stars and directors got their own section. Arnold Schwarzenegger, for example.

However, having a daughter in the house changed that. As soon as she was old enough to move about, she was pulling movies off the shelves for the heck of it. Then she was pulling them off to look at them. And for a while there, the tape would fall out of the box every time she picked one up. When she figured out how to put them back, she stuck any movie in any box, and put them anywhere on the shelf. After repeatedly trying to put them all back where they belong, I finally gave up. As long as they're on the shelves, I'm happy. Of course, now she's finally big enough to leave the movies alone.

According to my girlfriend, DVDs are my addiction. She's even jokingly suggested having me on Intervention because of them  :bouncegiggle:. Seriously I have over a thousand DVDs  :buggedout: and I feel a bit buried and overwhelmed by my own collection. I just get so tempted by cheap bin titles and dollar store titles so yeah I have a lot of crap in there too. They are all over the place...I've tried to organize them but the task becomes too big and overwhelming and I get beat out. Seriously it would take me days to get it all in order. Mostly I try and keep the stuff I'm less likely to watch repeatedly in back of the stuff I tend to rewatch more often. Of course I do have hundreds of DVDs I've yet to even get around to watching too.

I have quite a few DVDs.  My best guess is around 3000.  I have a huge metal Boltz DVD rack (with multiple extensions) that covers much of one wall.  They're all in there alphabetically.  That is out of space, so a number of bookshelves hold the overflow until I purchase another expansion for the Boltz rack.

That's the Badmovies.org collection.  The good movies are on a set of shelves, alphabetically, in our living room.

I categorize my movies first by the general time period in which I got them and then alphabetically. It's worked great so far! I also keep lists on my computer to help me keep track.

I re-organized my entire collection (about 1,400 DVDs) a few weeks ago. It took me four or five days but it was well worth it. I seeded out movies I had bought multiple times over the years (better editions) taking up valuable shelf space, got rid of junk cluttering my shelves and placed other Region coded discs seperately.
The first step may be the hardest but its better to keep your collection organzied and maintained before things get too chaotic

Interesting.  This is sort of like "movie discrimination" or setting out the "good china and silverware" and hiding the everyday stuff in the cupboard.  I have all 3,500 or so of mine lumped all together . . . the good with the bad and everything in between.  Perhaps it's wrong to have an Oscar winning movie beside a Herschell Gordon Lewis movie or an Andy Milligan movie.  I never really thought about the etiquette involved here.

I bought them all.  I always joke that it's the reason why I don't have nearly as much money saved away as I should.

I have a bunch of burned stuff as well from friends who have net flix accounts which probably amounts to another 250 to 300 things.

And I got a HDTV back in April and I'll probably be going Blu-Ray sometime early next year (I've just been up-converting stuff until then) which means I'll be replacing certain titles in Hi-Def so the whole process will begin anew somewhat.

Mine are all aligned in black DVD/CD cases (and I have several of them...and need MORE!).

My single-film DVDs are listed alphabetically.  Any DVDs with more than one film on them are in separate cases.  Seasons of TV shows are also in separate cases.  The 50 movie Mill Creek sets I have are currently still in their boxes.  I just created a database of my single-film DVDs yesterday.  Current count is at 506.  With all the multiple film DVDs added in, I'm sure I'm coming close to 800 films in my DVD collection and I still have several VHS movies I'd like to get in DVD format.

I just reorganized my collection. I have them all in several 256-count cases.

One case for TV collections, one for "legitimate" movies, one for kids' movies, one for bad movies, and yet another for my MST3K collection.

I did it this way to avoid having hundreds of dvd cases floating around taking up space. Plus there's no need flipping through all the dvds when I'm trying to browse for a certain type. The only drawback is when I add a movie, then I have to shift a ton.

I still haven't decided if I'm going to make another one for my burgeoning blu-ray collection.

I know exactly what you mean. That KILLS me. I do alphabetical order, so if a buy a movie like, say, Brainscan (which I scored for three bucks at the local Best Buy last night, shazam!), because that starts with a B, I have to movie somewhere around a gazillion other DVD's just one lousy spot to the right. And don't even get me started about when double-sized editions (like the Dawn Of The Dead Ultimate Edition) throw off the whole "one lousy spot" equation. Oi.

I haven't stepped up to blu-ray yet (but I probably will when my DVD player dies).  I'll probably just put the blu-ray movies on the same shelves alphabetically with my current DVD collection.

I don't own too many VHS tapes anymore; the few remaining are stored in no order in a couple different spots in my house.

My DVDs are seperated as movies (including short films and whatnot), tv shows, and music/concerts.  They're in alphabetical order except for movies that are a continuation of a series like The Road Warrior which would follow Mad Max, Godzilla films, etc.

I think my wife and I own close to 600 DVDs now, and have a handful of Blu-rays.  She thinks I'm weird for buying as many DVDs as I do (CDs, too--I have about 450 I think), but I can't get enough.
