Title: When musicians try to act: "worst performance" nominations
Post by: The Burgomaster on December 22, 2009, 11:53:13 AM
There are many to choose from, but here are a few:

* Vincent "Alice Cooper" Furnier in MONSTER DOG (but I thought he was funny in Wayne's World)

* Gordon "Sting" Sumner in DUNE and THE BRIDE (but I thought he was pretty good in STORMY MONDAY and LOCK, STOCK, AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS)

* Elvis Presley in all his movies

Here are some I thought of soon as I read the subject line.

Justin (Where Is He Now) Guarini and Kelly Clarkson in FROM JUSTIN TO KELLY (that's a film that literally causes me pain to watch)

Mariah Carey in GLITTER (it does make a great form of tourture however)

I don't know man.  You have to watch From Justin To Kelly.  I'd say its twice as painful.

I thought Beyonce Knowles was pretty awful in Pink Panther.

If we were to start a "best performance" nomination I'd go with Dwight Yoakam in Sling Blade.

I have to disagree with you on this.  He was pretty good in his pre-army  movies especially King Creole

Now the movies he was in after his Army days are pretty bad and the only reason he made them was because he was contractually obligated to.

Bon Jovi in "Vampires: Los Muertos".. I don't know if it was necessarily a bad performance, maybe more of just a bad choice for a character.  Hearing Bon Jovi drop the F-Bomb was crazy!

going out on a limb here, but what about dolly parton in "Rhinstone". I mean, Sly Stallone was in that movie and could not save it.

Or, what about Mick Jagger in "Freejack" ?

Not for nothing, but ANYTHING Bon Jovi (acting, music) is pretty awful.  So that should be discredited.

Good performance: Justin Timberlake in Black Snake Moan.
Bad performance: Prince in Purple Rain
Good performance: Keith Richards in Pirates III
Bad performance: 50 Cent in Get Rich or Die Trying
Good performance: Eminem in 8 Mile
Good performance: Courtney Love in The People VS Larry Flynt

Honestly, I think the average performance level of musicians in acting is quite a bit better than the ratio of bad-to-good acting jobs in Hollywood films in general.

You're sure about Prince in Purple Rain?  Cause I would've nominated him for the abomination known as Under the Cherry Moon.  A bit of an obscure movie, maybe, cause NOBODY remembers that flick.

Also, your pick for 50 Cent: I gotta say, that dude sucks as a rapper too, so it should be noted that NOBODY thought he'd do a good job as an actor.  But either way, it was a horrible performance.

I think Arch Hal Jr. deserves a mention for his performance in Eegah!

Haven't seen Under the Cherry Moon.  I just remember thinking he wasn't too good in Purple Rain, which is a little surprising as he was basically playing himself.  That's why Eminem did well in 8 Mile, I think.

Well, dunno... Courtney Love playing a slutty drug addict wasn't exactly a character stretch...

I loved what Triumph had to say about that... on one of his segments he's actually interview Bon Jovi and he says, "So, I understand you're acting now, right?  You're playing a vampire.  Finally. a role that REQUIRES you to suck!"

It's not shocking.  But Eminem did well in 8 Mile.  He even was good in Funny People, but it was mainly a cameo appearance, again playing himself.

But there's nothing like Riffing "Shot through the heart and you're to blame..." when he stakes a vampire!

I nominate Coolio for both Dracula 3000 and Pteradactyl.  Unfortunately, I think the awful performances he gives are probably exactly what both of those directors were looking for.

Gene Simmons in Runaway.  I'm not really sure what Michael Crichton was thinking when he cast this man as the villain.  I guess he never saw the movie that KISS tried to make in the 70's.
