Title: Laughing at Inappropriate Times
Post by: AndyC on January 18, 2010, 10:41:28 AM
I'm sure we've all done this. You're sitting in a crowded theatre, or watching a video with other people, the scene you're watching is dead serious, but something in it tickles you. And the fact that laughing will make you look like an a***ole only makes it harder to resist.

I can think of a couple right away.

Watching Star Trek: Generations, Picard is discussing his only blood relations burning to death. There's a moment when he tries to speak, but he's so overcome with sobbing, he can't get the words out. It looks funny as hell, and it caught me totally off guard the first time I saw it. So, theatre full of people silently glued to the screen, and suddenly there's a burst of giggling that everyone can hear.

The other one was not embarrassing, because only one other person was there, and he laughed too. It was maybe 20 years ago, watching a VHS of Dirty Harry with a friend, and it gets to the part where the killer, wearing a red ski mask, gets stabbed in the leg. He turns around screaming, his eyes wide open, and his mouth in a big "O." We lost it immediately. I mean, he looked like nothing less than an insane hot dog.

Unbreakable: when the kid pulls the gun on Bruce Willis in the kitchen.

House of Sand and Fog: Ben Kingsley's big dramatic moment when his son died (I think it was his son). Kingsley was on his knees overwhelmed by grief screaming his pain. I thought it was the funniest thing ever.

When THE EXORCIST: THE VERSION YOU'VE NEVER SEEN was released to theaters a few years ago, several people kept laughing whenever Linda Blair's character let out a string of profanity.  These were the sames scenes that scared the hell out of people when they saw the movie during the 1970s.  Now people laugh at them.

I laugh when the national anthem is playing.
You know, when everyone is standing dead serious and singing, I just have to giggle.

Then again, I'm not the only one.

When I was saw that movie in the theater, the entire audience was laughing at that scene. And not in a good way.

I laughed in the theater during Titanic when the ship was going down and one of the people pinged off one of the boilers.

I laughed at Batman's voice in The Dark Knight all the way through. People in the cinema thought I was absolutely stark raving bonkers! The only other time was when I saw The Phantom Menace with my dad. We thought every scene (barring Darth Maul's) was an abomination...

Same here!

I fell over laughing at the end of Final Destination 2, where the barbecued hand falls on the mom's plate.  A bunch of teens in the audience stared at me and didn't know what to think.  :teddyr:

I'm sure it's happened more, but the most recent one I can remember is during AVATAR.  Right after the giant tree where all the blue cat people live is destroyed.  The main girl cat person's father is found dead.  She starts wailing in saddness, and I couldn't help but laugh.  It just seemed goofy to me.

I can't help but laugh during the scene in Gladiator when he finds his family dead.. I feel all sad, and then a chicken walks by in the background, and I crack up.. everybody I know thinks I'm a horrible person for this, but it's so funny.

I was with about five or six friends and we were watching Silence of the Lambs.  When Hannibal said his line about eating the census takers liver I laughed like crazy.  One other person laughed, and the others just stared.

I mean, that line was hilarious.  How can someone not find that funny?

Back when that came out, my best friend and I went into hysterics at Buffalo Bill's delivery of "Put the f**king lotion in the basket!" For a long time after that, we could start each other snickering by doing impressions of that line.

I thought so, that's why I laughed.  Nobody else did.. screw them.

Another funny Silence Of The Lambs exchange that I laughed at (and hardly anyone else in the theater did):

Hannibal Lecter: Tell me, Senator: did you nurse Catherine yourself?
Senator Ruth Martin: What?
Hannibal Lecter: Did you breast-feed her?
Paul Krendler: Now wait a minute...
Senator Ruth Martin: Yes, I did.
Hannibal Lecter: Toughened your nipples, didn't it?
Paul Krendler: You son of a b***h!
Hannibal Lecter: Amputate a man's leg and he can still feel it tickling. Tell me, mum, when your little girl is on the slab, where will it tickle you?
Senator Ruth Martin: Take this... *thing* back to Baltimore!

Oh, wait. I've been thinking of the guy who hit the propeller. Did somebody hit a stack as well? I honestly haven't seen that movie since it was first released. Oddly enough, the propeller guy is just about the only thing that stuck with me. :teddyr: Maybe I'll see it again. I heard they were converting the whole movie to 3D and re-releasing it in the next couple of years.

At the initial release of Blue Velvet, at the point where Jeffery asks "Why are there people like Frank?", I just lost it. I thought every scene with Dennis Hopper was screamingly funny. I was almost ejected from the theater.
It is a comedy, isn't it?
"Heineken? F*ck that sh*t! PABST BLUE RIBBON!!!"

I'm not quite sure if this is anything original or wicked, but I laughed hard and long when Dumbledore died in the latest Harry Potter film. The scene in itself wasn't particularly funny, but the idea about laughing was so funny in itself that i couldn't control myself  :teddyr:

My apologies, it was the propeller he binged off of not the boiler. Either way its still funny to me. I have this thing when human bodies go flailing through the air that always makes me laugh.  Its a sad, sick thing.   :bluesad:

Born on the Forth of July (1989) - I laughed out loud in the theatre during several "serious" moments, but the one that takes the cake is the moment where his religious mother is shocked by his use of the word "penis" and says he shouldn't use that word in her house and he starts screaming "penis!" Also, elsewhere in the film when Tom Cruise does his over-the-top "acting" to overcompensate for the fact that he's not a good actor.

Running On Empty (1988) - When River Phoenix is saying his tearful goodbye to a local girl he fell in love with before having to leave town abruptly. He hugs her and has this look on his face like he's bursting into tears but it almost looks like he's struggling to keep a straight face. I've seen that scene a few times and laugh hysterically every time I see it.

I was actually scared the first time I saw Prophecy, being fairly young at the time. But even so, the kid in the yellow sleeping bag sent me into an uncontrollable giggling fit.

Then again, did anyone here see that scene and not laugh? Did Frankenheimer really believe people were going to be horrified by a giant jumping banana getting knocked through the air and exploding in a huge poof of feathers? That scene was hilarious. And to make a straight face even less likely, now I feel compelled to sing "Peanut Butter Jelly Time!" when the kid starts jumping. :teddyr:

Not a movie but something about someone who loved movies and passed that love onto me: At my Dad's memorial service, we were all understandably upset and down, until my aunt took her glasses off, wiped her eyes and said: "Enough of this crying sh*t, let's have a drink on Tommy."

The result of that comment was we all burst out laughing because (a) Dad had always said he wanted his friends and relatives to have a party on him when he passed and (b) that comment of my aunt's told us he was there with us. The other result was that we did have a party on him as he wanted.  :teddyr:

Last weekend I saw Ninja Assassin, and one part has ninjas trying to stop a speeding car with shuriken.  There were dozen of stars in the hood of the car.  I started giggling hysterically at the idea that all that training and no one thought to throw at the tires.

And when i was 16 or so, we say Pet Sematary in the theatre, and the bit where the kid gets hit by the gar and his shoe/foot goes flying caused my buddy to laugh and laugh and laugh.

Apparently my dad thinks the Exorcist is the funniest movie he has evere seen.

I know I've mentioned this in a similar thread but I cracked up during The Ring when the horse goes crazy and jumps over the railing of the ship.  If it hadn't hit the rail and just made a clean jump I wouldn't have found it so humorous.

Another was during part of We Were Soldiers where a napalm strike goes all wrong and one of the burned soldiers says "Tell my wife I loved her!  And my babyyyyy!"  Something about how he sounded when he said that just got to me.

This isn't really inappropriate laughter, but when my brother and I saw Sleepy Hollow in the theater we were laughing at a lot of the bloody parts, like where Ichabod is performing an autopsy and gets a big ol' squirt of blood in his face, but the rest of the crowd just didn't seem to get it.

I once got thrown out of a high school English class because I couldn't stop giggling at Clash of the Titans. We were doing Greek mythology at the time. I was already on my last warning, after making a few quips over the course of the movie (predating MST3K by several years). To be fair, the guy behind me was doing the same thing, just more quietly. So, I'm already in a laughing mood, and suddenly one more peep will land me in trouble. So, right at the big, dramatic moment when the Kraken is due to arrive, Perseus is struggling to get there and everything is quiet and tense, there's this yowling bird call in the background. At this point, the guy behind me mumbles "Shut up, you stupid cat." I just lost it. I could not stop giggling. I think the teacher appreciated the effort, but it was still a disruption, and I spent the rest of the period in the hallway.

The bird call (or whatever animal it is) can be heard at 8:30 of this clip:
