Title: need help falling into the next level of MADNESS.
Post by: KYGOTC on February 05, 2010, 01:33:09 PM
Ok, there are SEVERAL sub-genres that branch out of our beloved b-movie family tree. 50's atomic monster fliks, cheesy kung fu, japaneese monster fliks, troma, ect. You guys know the list. But theres ONE type that leeches onto my vertebre like a Tingler and hazznt let go since I dared to tred foot into its bizzare teritory. I lovingly call these b-movies the "Grab Bag" sub-genre, because you have no idea what your gunna get once you plunge into it, but you know its gunnabe sumthin' WEIRD. These are films like Richard Elfmans "Forbidden Zone" , Alex Winter's "Freaked" and stuff like that.

Now I'm ina pickle, because i need my fix, but dont know where to look. I thought "Cool World" would do the trick, but that ended up being ......eh.

So any suggestions? and I dont mean movies that have just like ONE memorabe "WTF" scene, I want the WEIRDEST most ACIDY trip movie you can suggest, without it being to "artsy fartsy".

I've always thought movies like "Forbidden Zone", "Pink Flamingos" and "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" are Cult Movies made on Purpose, the director intent is to make these films a cult movie.

Cool World I'd assumed it a typical Exploitation film using the tech of Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) for an adult audience.

Ah, a topic after my own heart; Forbidden Zone never fails to take me to my happy place, and Freaked is also lots of fun. A few more that might help you get your fix:

Jacob's Ladder. Not a comedy, but plenty weird.
Shakes the Clown. The reason we don't see Bobcat Goldthwaite in front of the cameras any more.
For Your Height Only. Midget Phillipino super spy. Need I say more?
Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter. No explanation needed.

And yet more that don't measure up to the enjoyable weirdness above, but that might meet your needs:

The Dark Backward. I don't really like this one, but it is definitely weird.
Naked Lunch. Typewriter insects and other anomalies.
Barbarella. One of two Jane Fonda movies I'll voluntarily watch (the other being Cat Ballou).

Naked Lunch not up on the wierdness scale? I don't know that I agree with you there. It's plenty wierd.

For comedic controversial wierdness, you may want to try Hamlet 2 (2008). Not a great film, but full lots of odd uncomfortable moments and some very hilarious moments. Just remember the words "raped in the face."

I don't know what you mean by too artsy fartsy, but if you want nightmarish wierd, what about David Lynch. Plenty of wierdness there. That man operates from a level of his subconscious that is truly original.

David Lynch is EXACTLY what i meant by too artsy Fartsy. Eraser Head was one of the most long drawn out borring ass movies ive ever seen.

Have you seen Videodrome?  Deborah Harry is in it!! Harry, Deborah!

I've heard of that movie before but I just recently saw it and Boy! it was weird! I did fall asleep at the end though so I have to see it again. I don't know though, it could be considered too artsy.

Ive seen Videodrome. I liked it, but I dont really consider it a grab bag b-movie. Its to coherent and plot driven, which is not a BAD thing, I mean its JAMES WOODS, fer petes sake, but not what im looking for this time.

Naked Lunch is indeed very weird, but you skipped over my adjective: "enjoyable." I just didn't enjoy Naked Lunch as much as I did the others. I own it on dvd, but it just doesn't send me to my happy place like the others I listed.

I'll add to my list:

The Godmonster of Indian Flats. Mutant bipedal sheep.
Jabberwocky. One of the less-known movies starring the Monty Python cast.
Brazil. Is it real or a dream?
Spirited Killer. A $5 Wal-Mart find that features a trilogy of movies made early in the career of Ong Bak (sp?). They feature vampire zombies and martial artists breaking into pro wrestling matches.

Zardoz.   If you're looking for weirdness, you need to see Zardoz.

Also, I'd recommend The Adventures of Baron Manchasen and Time Bandits.

Jans Rautenbach's Jannie Totsiens [Johnny Farewell] is probably the best candidate for the weirdest film I have ever seen. It is an intensely scary film ~ set in a lunatic asylum ~ but it is also a very funny film. Think One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, amp it up and you have Jannie Totsiens.  :teddyr:

Ok, i looked int these.
Jacob's Lader seems too dramatic.
I OWN JC vamp hunter, and its ok, but its one of those movies that suffers from "the title is weirder than the film itself" syndrome.

I've heard of For Your Hight Only. It seems cool, ill check it out.
Shakes the clown seems ok, Ill check it out just because I really dig all those wierd comedies that came out in the early 90s.
Dark Backward seems pretty strange, but something tells me it has a lot of borring parts.
Naked Lunch......eh, looks kinda weird, but its no Forbidden Zone.
Barbarella just duzznt seem to apeal to me.

Weird movies?  I have nothing to say on the subject.   :bluesad:

Well, I would recommend PHANTASM as exactly the kind of thing you're looking for... except I know you hated it, which makes it tough to predict what you might like.

Here's some weird stuff I covered (skipping the really obvious) that's B-movie related and no too artsy-fartsy (you can watch trailers/clips on some of these):

Blood Diner (http://366weirdmovies.com/14-blood-diner-1987/) - like a Troma movie but the insanity is mostly unintentional
The Dark Backward (http://366weirdmovies.com/46-the-dark-backward-1991/) - recommended if you like early John Waters
Ink (http://366weirdmovies.com/43-ink-2009/) - if you like Terry Gilliam fantasies
Lair of the White Worm (http://366weirdmovies.com/23-the-lair-of-the-white-worm-1988/) - Ken Russel's most "B-like" movie: if you like also see GOTHIC & (especially) THE DEVILS

I also have a separate B-movie category (http://366weirdmovies.com/tag/b-movie/), though I admit I'm not very careful about tagging everything.

After you fall into this level of madness, it's the next level that's really fun.

Not sure if Hard Rock Zombies has shown  up on the suggestion list yet but I'd give it the big thumbs up.

Also check out The Devil's Sword.  Its a beyond odd Kung Fu flick.

Yeah, they took down the LotWW trailer for some reason and I haven't found anything to replace it with yet.  Need to get on that.  Andrew reviewed Lair of the White Worm (http://www.badmovies.org/movies/whiteworm/) too and didn't like it nearly as much as I did.  You can find a clip and more pics on his review page.

I stared watching Pink Flamingos this morning. I didnt get to finish it cuz i had to go to work, but from what ive seen so far, its not as weird as people say it is. Raunchy, yes. weird, no.
