Title: GAMER (2009)
Post by: indianasmith on February 11, 2010, 08:36:58 PM
In the near future, gaming has been taken to a whole new level.  Instead of controlling computer generated characters on a screen, players can actually control real, breathing human beings and make them do whatever they want, taking voyeurism to whole new levels.

Computer genius Ken Castle (DEXTER's Michael Hall) first created SOCIETY,  a real life version of SIMS, where players use an implanted brain chip to make their human characters talk, have sex, argue, or do almost anything non-lethal at will.  That game made him the richest man on earth.

Then he came to the rescue of a failing U.S. prison system by creating SLAYERS - a more violent alternative to SOCIETY, where death row inmates were sent into a crumbling urban landscape to kill each other.  If they survive 30 battles, they receive a full and unconditional pardon.

Kable (Gerard Butler)  has just won battle number 25.  His teenaged controller has become an international celebrity.  But Castle has no intention of letting Kable survive 30 encounters . . . because Kable knows Castle's secret. And Kable is determined to escape, because he has a wife and daughter waiting for him on the outside.

This movie is highly entertaining, mega-violent, and loaded with absolutely gratuitous nudity.  It is a testosterone flick pure and simple, heavily remniscent of THE RUNNING MAN and CRANK.  It was a good movie in the sense of being wonderfully, over-the-top BAD!  I was thoroughly amused throughout.  Anyone else seen it?

Yea I have. It was quite entertaining. But another film like this - but much better is The Tournament. It is really great. The top assassins in the world meet every 7 years for a competition where they must kill each other - the winner is crowned the best in the world and takes home millions. It has Ving Rhames in it and is really much more entertaining than Gamer. Seriously if you liked Gamer you've got to see The Tournament.
