Title: Okay, really? (Wizard of Oz)

I know Wizard of Oz has been done a lot, and it being done in different ways isn't a surprise, but look under "version of..."  There are three upcoming versions of this movie coming out.  One called Oz, which springs to mind prison rape; one called Dark Oz, which makes me think Tim Burton or some lesser TB wanna-be; and a Wonderful Wizard of Oz slated for 2011.  I'm usually somewhat forgiving of remakes or updated version, but do we really need three this close together?  I'm guessing one or two of those will be animated, but it still seems ridiculous.  While we're at it, why not make a porno?  Maybe Draining the Lizard of Oz, for those with a pee fetish.

I just don't want this story to become a bigger version whore than Frankenstein or Dracula.

They're making Wicked into a movie, as well. We're going to be seeing a lot of Oz in the near future.

Almost forgot about that one.  Although, I wonder if they're going to use the book or the musical as the source.  Both had some big differences.

I watched the original Wizard of Oz on tv when I was a little girl.

My sons watched it on tv when they were little.

My grandchildren now watch it on tv.

40 years.

It's a CLASSIC.  It will still be a CLASSIC when my grandchildren have children and they watch it on tv.

I doubt if any kind of remake will have that kind of longevity!

Actually the famous and most popular Wizard of Oz is itself a remake.

Baum wrote about a dozen Oz stories and other authors contributed even more stories to the Oz canon. I wonder if a couple of those aren't adaptations of different Oz stories than "Wonderful Wizard."

Thanks for enlightening me, xJaseSFx.  After reading your comment, I did a little researching and was surprised when I read that The Wizard of Oz had been part of the Silent Film Era of the early 1900's.  You can really learn a lot of interesting things on this forum.  Thanks for the info.

Yeah, I've watched one or two of the earlier Oz adaptations. One of them actually involved Baum's son. It had almost nothing to do with the book, though, outside of character names. If you ever hear the claim that The Wizard of Oz is actually a political statement, it is actually about this early reworking of the story, not from the book or classic movie. In my opinion, the 1939 Oz movie is one of (if not the) best movie ever made. Any remakes will fall far short, both in terms of entertainment and depth (yes, the 1939 Wizard of Oz movie is structured in a very literary manner and adds a depth that even Baum's book lacked. It is one of the very few cases where the movie is actually better than the book. I loved the Oz books by Baum (and the ones by Thompson) as a kid, but the movie is what started my love for the stories. It was even the very first DVD I bought.

As for Wicked, I hated the book. Haven't seen the musical, but it couldn't have strayed far enough from the book to make me actively seek it out.

Watching the WIZARD OF OZ on tv is one of my earliest movie memories. For those of you who remember them, I still have all my Mego dolls, and the Emerald City playset along with ones for THE PLANET OF THE APES.

This is a classic film, and while the RETURN TO OZ from 1985 is nowhere the same quality I do think it is an enjoyable kids/adventure film with some good effects particularly Jack Pumpkinhead, and Tik-Tok.

They Did One Just Recently Called TIN MAN , It Was A Sci-Fi Original Miniseries

It Was Only Very Loosely Based On THE WIZARD OF OZ But It Was Still Good

Am I the only one who thinks The Wizard of Oz sucks?  Like I said, give me The Wiz, anyday.  I also like Return to Oz much more.

Just A Thought

Has Anyone Ever Seen THE LION OF OZ?

It's An Animated Movie , I Think It's From The 90's Or 2000's
The Movie Is A Prequel To THE WIZARD OF OZ , It Shows Where The Cowardly Lion Came From

The Movie Features The Voices Of Tim Curry , Kathy Griffin , And Jason Priestly As The Lion
