Title: Crap... my ungrade isn't going so well...
Post by: BTM on February 27, 2010, 04:00:43 PM
So, my parts for my computer arrived, and I think, "Hey, this will be AWESOME!" Got me two 512 memory sticks, and two 8500GT series 256 nvidia graphics cards to replace my two 126 6600GT graphics cards (there's a bridge connecting them, it's a PCI thing.

Well, anyway, I put the memory and the cards in, it's just been one weird thing after another.  First, I get a message (again) telling me my fan is running slow.  You see, the main reason I'm replacing my two original graphics cards is that the fan on the "top" card is running so and I couldn't fix it.  But, for some reason, it seem to be running slow on the NEW card as well, making me thinking maybe it's not the cards but some electronical problem with the PCI slot or something.

Then, I start up the computer and... nothing.  My comp just sits there, black screen.  I reboot and then it begins to beep at me, indictating (I think) that something's wrong with the memory.  I suddenly remember have this problem before months back when I bang my hard drive accidently and knocked a stick loose.  We (me and tech support) tried putting the cards into the blue slots (started in the black ones), then put it back and they seemed to work again.

Anyway, been pulling out parts, trying to start up, and then putting back in.  A lot of times the menu will come up saying, "The computer was not shut down properly" and giving the option of starting Windows normally, in safe mode, or last know configuration.  Seems like no matter WHAT I'd pick, it'd just lock up.

Finally, I pulled the new memory and put in my old cards and I finally got it to work again in safe mode.  Then I restarted and I'm back... with all my old stuff.

So, I dunno what the hell is wrong.. are my parts messed up, or are the slots on my machine going nuts?  Is it just my cards or is it the memory sticks?

Think I'll try subbing out the old sticks for the new see how that goes, then work on the graphics cards.

Dang it, you'd think this stuff would be easy.

Anyway, wish me luck, if you got any tips, let me know.

Glad to hear it, you went from nearly killing the computer to improving performance in just 1/2 hour!

Well, I THINK everythings working okay... Guess I needed to just pull everything out and then put it back in.  I've got all 2 Gigs of my memory installs, and BOTH graphic cards and the connector working.  HOWEVER, when I booted it up the first time, I still got a message about one of my fans running slowly or not at all (but strangely enough, I didn't get that message when I just had one new card pulled in.)  So, dunno, have to see if it's still saying that when I start it again.

Or maybe a completely different part needs replacing.

Times like this I wish I had the dough to just say, "Ahh, forget it!" and just grab an entirely new system!  :)
