Title: The Thing: A masterpeice by John Carpenter
Post by: Slipperytuna on April 05, 2002, 11:43:03 AM
The thing is a classic horror film where imitating aliens take over a secluded scientific research base in antarctica. It's some scary s**t man.

Things I Learned:
Scientific research bases stockpile flamethrowers and shotguns.
They never really do any research at these bases.
Alien autopsies are an everyday thing.
If you want to throw a grenade at least take your gloves off first.
Normal doctors are able to build spaceship things.
Normal men wouldn't go crazy being in a place for 6 months with no women. (or porn)

You have to watch this film it is a classic. Where else can you find a human head that turns into a spider.

I agree the Thing is a very well done remake. One of the few examples of a remake I like better the original.

My favorite science fiction horror film.  The creature is really horrifying and realized with a great deal of work too.  Get the DVD and listen to the excellent extras, there are interviews with Carpenter, Bottin, and several cast members.

I have yet to see someone who did not jump at the one serious "gotcha!" scene.

Based upon the short story "Who Goes There" by John Wood Campbell, Jr. I still prefer the older version over the newer version, though, I enjoyed the newer version as well. I will credit the newer version with one thing. It is much closer to the short story, then the older version. Enjoy!

Surely one of the best horror films I have ever seen and maybe the best one by Carpenter (I should watch again "The  fog" to be sure, though). My favourite scene is the bloos sample test. Everytime I watch it I keep on thinking this time they will make it.

One of the greatest things about this movie is that it demonstrates how much more effective physical on-set special effects are than 99.999% of CGI effects.  There's a weight, a reality, to having animatronic props there that post-inserted computer effects can rarely match.

Amen Brother Nathan! I've been meaning to bring that up on here. The effects in this movie may be twenty years old but they look way better than most cgi. Special fx are supposed to make the secene come alive and make you believe it's real. Most cgi makes it look like your watching a video game!

Agreed, Nathan.  The killer worms in Robot Holocaust were so much more realistic than could've been realized with CGI :)

Hey, you're not really comparing apples to apples, are you?  But the handpuppets are more realistic than, say, the CGI alien in Vampire Vixens From Venus.
