Last year I'd rented a few films on Netflix staring Andrew Prine and I thought were really fun to watch (Nightmare Circus (1974) and The Centerfold Girls (1974) ~ Although my wife thought the Hippies in CG was a total nightmare) So I put Simon on the queue and last week the movie came in.
I wasnt sure what I have gotten, since the movie mentions andy warhol and velvet underground, I was thinking this is somekind of arthouse movie and looking at a few other review made the movie sounded like a psychedelic trip and I was thinking, "Oh, this is going to be something like Mazes and Monsters (1982) (TV)"
But its not...
Without spoiling much of the movie, its a fantasy horror film that tends to make itself realistic by surprising the people within "The Normal World." Similar to The Craft (1996) but better.
I really like this type of horror film since it tries to make itself realistic although logic says it can never happen. Simon also seemed more realistic then most fantasy warlocks so his actions sold me.
Look for Beavis & Butt-Head fathers... (It's kind of funny my wife said "I'd guess they would be Beavis & Butt-Head fathers" and sure enough towards the ending of the movie these 2 guys were sitting and watching the events on the TV... much like Beavis & Butt-Head)
I bought this movie and BARN OF THE NAKED DEAD (aka NIGHTMARE CIRCUS) awhile ago. Solid 1970s drive-in stuff.
I liked BARN OF THE NAKED DEAD... although imdb is loaded with people "b***hing" about the content of the film (no naked girls and no dead girls ~ or such) I do find it a joy and the story does predates "Hills Have Eyes" yet you can see the little similarities...
I really like Simon, I think it aged very well for this type of film... Maybe because of Harry Potter series that got us wanting more movies about witchcraft/magic without the silly "I must worship the devil" theme. [funny but I can picture Simon living in Harry Potter's world]
Although it seemed that the movie was mistaken as a Charles Manson exploitation film or that the producers tried to profit from Charles Manson (I'm not sure but either case I think has kept the audience away); I do think the movie is an adult version of "The Raven (1963)" and could even get away by compairing itself to Rosemary's Baby (1968).
I was dissapointed with this. it looked like it was going to be a real over the top someting weird type thing and it really wasn't

wow usually we share similar tastes in movies...
Although I'm not quite sure what you mean by over the top... I was quite surprised that the movie went at this level.
[spoiler warning]
His magic caused it to rain and chaos within the police department, an unexplained "relic" that forensic was examining and his ability to enter the otherworld (which seems believable since the "relic" was consider supernatural) although the special effects in the mirror actually mirrors 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) ~ sorry for the pun... The special [visual] effect hasnt changed much since The Black Hole (1979) and Altered States (1980) so I wasnt surprised. Since the movie was trying to take itself a little serious [ok somewhat like a black comedy] I didnt expect to see Hercules in the Haunted World (1961) and then again I didnt expect to see anything as spooky (or super amazing for the time) like Event Horizon (1997).
I just thought it was going to be an insane soft core sex movie, basically like The Sinful Dwarf. instead it was kind of conventional and depressing though I liked "magnetic charge! elecrtic charge!"

I didn't say it like that! I sound way cooler! I said "Whoa! It's Beavis and Butt-head!" and then I thought about how old this movie was and said "no, it must be their dads"... and they later I said "the blonde looks like what would happen if Beavis and Butt-head had a kid together".

By the title, I thought it was going to be about some dude named Simon and his harem of sexy witches.. I was a little disappointed that it wasn't. However, with a guy named Hercules and 2 kids that look like Beavis and Butt-head all depressing moments are cancelled out.

Those hippies were the worst! I don't want to talk about that movie or those hippies!
I've never had the pleasure or displeasure of seeing this film, but the title has stuck with me for almost forty years, because when I was in college in the early 70's, I knew somebody who knew somebody who appeared in this film. And the is the nearest I have ever come to knowing somebody who appeared in a film, except for "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes," but that's a whole different story.
