Title: Rock & Rule (1983)
Post by: InformationGeek on March 27, 2010, 08:03:59 PM
Hey guys!  I went to the local video store that was going out of buisness and I decide to raid a lot of their movies.  There wasn't much left sadly, but I got a few good ones.  This one was the last film I got and it certianly grabbed my attention.  I know very little about the movie, but it was 3 bucks and the special edition so why not?

From what I've vaguely researched, the film stars Cheap Trick, Debbie Harry (Blondie!), Iggy Pop, and others.  Now that's a lineup!  So, for those who have seen it (I suspect at least one of you), what do you think of it?  Is it good or bad?

I think it's a good animated film and I enjoy it alot. I'd take it any day over watching dreamworks crap about every animal under the sun and stuff like Avatar. I always find stuff like Rock & Rule and Ralph Bakshi's work for example, to have much more depth, darkness and grit. Plus, hand-drawn animation these days is a lost art. Rock and Rule in my opinion is a good film and I'd go so far as to say I like it more than Heavy Metal.

When the animation and story in "Rock & Rule" work, the film is amazingly fun to watch.  Cannot say that I liked it more than the original "Heavy Metal" though.

Speaking of Bakshi, I watched "Fire and Ice" again the other night, and that is an entertaining film.  It is also a film that sticks to an adult story.  The Frazetta style combined with Bakshi's animation made it a Conan adventure, and I wish that there were more animated films like it.  When we see the princess, who is lounging on furs with her hyperborian bikini barely covering her, and the big cat in the room, my mind exploded with "Wow.  This really is a Frazetta come to life."

Bakshi is good, unless you're talking about "American Pop" which is virtually unwatchable. Booooooring. Ah well, every filmmaker is allowed mistakes.

I love this movie.  I started a thread about it in the Good Movies category.  Which really is what it deserves.  It's sorta a PG version of heavy metal, and pretty good at that.

Great movie. I remember seeing it a couple of times in the 80s, and I rented it from Zip just last year. Nelvana made some really cool stuff before they went pretty much exclusively into mainstream kids' cartoons.
