R.I.P.
Sad. I'm convinced he really was the Sex Pistols, the lads were just his instrument.

I agree. He manufactured a punk band and helped create a generation.
MALCOLM McLAREN did a lot of interesting work (if not infamous: think NEW YORK DOLLS in head to toe red patent leather in front of the Russian flag). (http://www.thunders.ca/discs/rpl.jpg)
I've always liked his music. Good night MALCOLM!

I disagree, well, not for Rotten anyhow. I don't believe McLaren created him.
Sid of course was steered by McLaren, so were Paul and Steve.
Glen left cos he got sick of being told conflicting stories, he wasn't sacked.

SID VICIOUS is recognized as a no-talent who couldn't even play his instrument.
JOHN LYDON is overrated in some circles, and was always an arrogant cus, but most importantly was discovered by
MALCOLM McLAREN and inserted as frontman for the Punk band he "manufactured... "
I like Lydon, agree to disagree.
Lydon/Rotten is the only one of the foursome I think had any real talent, but I still think the overall project reflected McLaren more than anything. THE SEX PISTOLS almost seems like a conceptual performance art piece to me rather than a typical band.
Steve Jones for me. Both his solo studio albums in the 80s were brilliant and sounded very different to eachother. "Mercy" being very laid back with some haunting pop tones, and then "Fire & Gasoline" being completely no-nonsense raw hard rock.

It's only with hindsight that we realize
McLAREN's vision, expressed as
THE SEX PISTOLS, was pretty much his baby and remarkable for the fact that
THE SEX PISTOLS were as contrived as
THE MONKEES.

Don't misunderstand me, I think I liked
PIL better than
SEX PISTOLS, but it was
McLAREN's orchestrations (all from that early '80s era) that I enjoyed most. So would you say
Metal Box is the
PIL record to listen to?

Well, you certainly can't dance to it.
