Hey, I just bumped into a review on Disc Dish about the original 1965 Gamera getting released on DVD. Supposedly a gorgeous-looking, remastered version!
Yes, I believe Shout! Factory has acquired the rights to the original Gamera series and will be releasing all of them.
Looks like no english dub though. I think they do some MST3K titles, maybe they'll finnaly get the Gamera MSt3k eps on dvd

There was lots of speculation on that when they landed Gamera, but the official word from S!F is "no plans to release Gamera MST3Ks at this time." :bluesad: Apparently the Japanese do not take kindly to having their giant monsters mocked.

I think the unavailability of the MST3K'd Gamera was more because of American distributor Sandy Frank, who reportedly didn't take kindly to Joel and the 'bots' ribbing.

Yeah, that's apparently a widely believed myth, but the guy who tracks the copyright status of the MST3K movies on the MST3K forums says it's always been the Japanese who were the stumbling block. Plus, Frank doesn't even own the rights anymore, they reverted years ago. In fact, I gather the Japanese may have been upset at Frank for leasing the rights to the US versions to MST3K in the first place.

I was myth-informed! :teddyr:
That is interesting to know and a bit of a disappointment concerning the MST3K versions, but I'm glad that I picked up Vol.10 with Godzilla Vs. Megalon before it was pulled off the shelves.
Now if only I had the foresight to pick up Vol.9 at the same time, that one is ridiculously priced now.
I'd like to see Gamera vs Zigra, but I could only find the MST3k version.
I think this is awesome news. Hopefully this means we'll get to see the original Japanese versions of all the Gamera films. Sure they're most likely quite different in their original form.
