Title: Movies you hated (but don't quite know why)
Post by: The Gravekeeper on June 02, 2010, 01:03:53 AM
Okay, since this is a site about reviewing movies, most of us are pretty good at pinpointing why we don't like some movies. Sometimes it's an actor that really grates on us, or the plot relied too heavily on characters making stupid decisions, or maybe the performances are just flat and uninteresting. Once in a blue moon, however, we come across movies that we can't stand but we just can't put on our finger on why. We've seen worse, we've enjoyed worse, but there's just something about that particular movie that just ruins it.

For me, personally, it's "Dark Harvest." I've seen movies that are worse in every respect, but there's just something about this one that actually angers me.

Being a fan of shorts & the homemade backyard opus, I feel I should like the works of The Polonia Brothers, but the weak storylines & poor character development are just so grating.  :hatred:

Anything based on the works of Neil Simon. Aside from his characters being selfish & naive, they seem to have absolutely no motivation. Even the gratuitous T&A in "Edmond" couldn't stop me from hating everyone on the screen, & I had to quit about halfway through it.

The movie I hate most is definately The Dead Next Door (1989). I mean, I love zombie flicks, I'm a huge fan, but this is totally cr@p. Annoying acting, poor script, bad video/audio quality and goes on and on and on...
Don't waste 1 hour and 18 secs of your life watching this movie!
From the cover only you understand it's a failure.

hmmmm, it's a toss up with The first Space ship on Venus, Troll, and Lost in Space.

Even The Odd Couple?  Dang, that's harsh!  :buggedout:  Although, I can see your point about his characters.

I'm kind of the same way about Eli Roth.  I don't know what, exactly, it is about his movies that I hate so much; I love Cronenburg so it isn't the gore aspect, and I've sat through and even enjoyed plenty of horror flicks that were dumber than Cabin Fever or Hostel.  But I just cannot find anything to like about anything he does (and dear God why does Tarantino keep hanging out with him?)
I also irrationally hated American Beauty when it came out.  No particular reason, but I wanted to slap the face off every single character.  And while I certainly didn't hate it, I was surprised how little I cared for The Hurt Locker.  It's a well-done movie and I wasn't put off by its message or story, but I forgot about it as soon as it ended.

I must confess, I never did see the movie, but I did like the TV series.
Of course, I kinda' doubt Neil Simon, himself, would've had much to do with that episode in which Oscar & Felix discover their air conditioner is haunted by the ghost of a pirate captain.

I'm just really annoyed, because every acting coach I meet is so into this guy, & recommends at least one of his works.
The first one was "Barefoot in the Park", & I spent the whole time wondering, "What are these two people doing together?"
I never got that "opposites attract" vibe that was supposed to be in there, as much as this idea that the two main characters had never met before the wedding. Throughout the movie, they seem to know absolutely nothing about each other, and care very little about each others' feelings, even in the end where they kiss & make up.

I actually enjoy most of Neil Simon's earlier works (THE ODD COUPLE, THE SUNSHINE BOYS, BAREFOOT IN THE PARK, etc.)  I think he lost some of his snappy humor somewhere in the late 1970s and never quite got it back.

I always know why I don't like a movie. It always basically boils down to one of two things: either 1) it's boring or 2) it's annoying.

to flip it around, a movie I have no idea why I liked is SOUTH PARK: THE MOVIE

I think South Park is the unfunniest thing ever broadcast on tv and even seeing it for 10 seconds when I'm channel hopping actually makes me feel angry and want to throw something at the screen, but for some unknown reason I though the film was pretty good

Or the unholy mixture of both.

I'm with Rev, I always know why I dislike a movie. I'm always to give a movie the benefit of the doubt, so that helps. Unfortunately, I also constantly analyze every movie I watch.

most new comedies. I just do not think they're funny. potty jokes and vulgar language only go so far with me. I'd rather just watch "Airplane!" or "Spaceballs".

I second that!  Really, things like the works of Judd Apatow or most new films starring Will Ferrell (expect for Elf and Stranger than Fiction) are just friggin awful!  I think the only new comedy, in this "stupid comedy" genre I could stand was The Hangover.  And that was pushing it.
