I was watching the Thing recently and I noticed that it set itself right up for a sequel in the end, but none was ever produced.
What other movies left a continuous or open ending but didn't make any money so no one produced a sequel ?

The Conan franchise was supposed to continue but never made it past The Destroyer
REMO WILLIAMS: THE ADVENTURE BEGINS. And ends, apparently.
THE SWORD AND THE SORCERER . . .
actually, I think they are releasing the sequel later this year - about 20 years or more late!
1998's DEEP RISING ended with our heroes and heroine stranded on an island. A jungle and volcanos in the backround and a load roar left Finnigan to utter "Now what?" We never found out. :bluesad:
Super Mario Bros.
Buckaroo Bonzai mentioned a sequel at the end, and the movie had a few references to other nemesis that were supposed to be explained in future episodes of the franchise.

Good call on Buckaroo Banzai. I remember that. I think they expected it to do better than it did.
Here's a ridiculous one that was set up for a sequel but I doubt they were very serious:
Kung Pao: Enter the Fist.
Flash Gordon (1980)
I'm actually kind of pleased, as it made it even more pleasantly cheesy.
Mel Brooks History of the World Part 1, although I suppose that was part of the joke.
Well, Eragon and The Golden Compass were supposed to get franchises, but the Box Office said otherwise.
The Incredibles
Chronicles of Riddick (although maybe it doesn't count if it's already a sequel)
While they resolved fairly well, I would've liked to see the stories in Dark City, Boiler Room and Quigley Down Under get continued.
I kind of like that they never did a sequel to The Thing. The ambiguity of the end made it more haunting for me  I suppose it's only a matter of time before it gets a "gritty reboot"

One morning I looked at the channel guide and saw Remo Williams. I was very excited but it was a series. The teacher was the same, but the dude doing Remo was not. Very silly show.
So this movie did continue, just not as a movie.
Sad.
Later,
John
Just about everything I've seen by Full Moon or Troma seems to be set up that way.
Recalling the pre-release hype, I think "MegaForce" was supposed to franchised. Even as a kid, I was glad that didn't happen.
Though it wasn't the intention, That last line in "Serenity" just screams, "To be continued".
I know it is still early days, but I, for one, am looking forward to District 10
At the end of Reptilicus, there's a shot of the disembodied leg starting to regenerate. With the ominous music, one would assume that there would be another movie. But, not surprisingly, it never happened.
Hawk the Slayer.
But damn it, that movie deserved a sequel.
Eragon.
Seed of Chucky
Freddy vs Jason
Daredevil
I'm still waiting for Dementia 14 to come out. :bouncegiggle:
Mother's Day
Maniac (1980)
I don't know if it counts but Distric 9, the way it ended gives a feel for a sequel. Don't know if there making one, anyone heard anything?
Been awile since I've seen it, but doesn't the end of "Manos" set up for a possible sequel?

Daredevil
Elektra could be considered as a sequel/further part in the franchise

The "trailer" for Part 2 at the end confirms that. Really funny.

This isn't really a sequel I guess, but I swear at the end of the credits of one of the Sorority House Massacre movies, there's a little note that says something about a new Orville Ketchum movie called "Orville in Orbit" and I don't think that movie exists.
Paquita didn't you post at this board many years ago, like before 2005? I swear someone had a screenname like yours then disappeared.
Someone even made a topic, maybe Ash, asking 'where oh where is Paquita?'
Haven't been on here in a while, but...
Neon Maniacs - The movie left so much unanswered...like what were the monsters? It seemed like somehow they tried to play up they were from some gateway/portal/other dimension. Plus the surviving cast knew they were going to keep being hunted by the things once the rain stopped at the end.
Kung Pow: Enter the Fist - The director/star of the movie pointed out they were actually going to do a sequel on the DVD's commentary and even make a joke about a sequel in the movie itself.
Night of the Creeps - To me this movie did set itself up for a sequel even with the true ending. The leech creatures going into a graveyard of all things... It would be cool to see a sequel set in a post-apocalyptic setting where the leech zombies overrun the world in a 'Night/Dawn/Day of the Living Dead' kind of way, but keep the humor somehow intact.
Phantasm IV - They keep the rumor mill going about a fifth movie to finally finish the series, and after the fourth movie, we need a movie to give some closure. Especially before Angus Scrimm dies as he's getting majorly up there in age.
The Mario Brothers Movie.
Glad THAT stinker didn't get a sequel.

I'm not, I really want them to make another.
It'd be a hell of a trip!
DR DETROIT promised us a sequel . . . they even gave the title:
DR DETROIT II:
THE WRATH OF MOM!
But then they never made it.
I LOVED DR DETROIT back in the day. Seems pretty lame now.

That's me - The one and only! I dropped off, grew up, got married, had a baby, and came back.

The Movie DRIVE THRU Had A Great Setup For A Sequel , It's A Real Shame That They Never Went Through With It
Two words. Stephen Sommers.
Someone has already mentioned his "Deep Rising," but there is also his "Van Helsing" and his "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," which all were seemingly made with an ending that would lead to a sequel. The set up ending for a sequel in his films is probably the best thing in his films.
The ending for the most recent "Sherlock Holmes" was seemigly set up, so there'd be a sequel.
As was the ending for the most recent "Robin Hood." That film should have ended with King John signing the Magna Carta, but by trying to set up a sequel, I think they just weaken a film that was at its best just mediocre.
"The Long Good Friday" certainly deserved a sequel - if only for us to find out what happened to Bob Hoskins' character of Harold Shand.
Masters Of The Universe
Skeletor survived at the end and exclaimed "I'll be back!". The protracted script for the sequel was later adapted into the awful Jean Claude Van-Damme film Cyborg. Basically the first film ran out of money which in turn, hurt it's chances of making enough to greenlight a second outing.

Come on now. That movie didn't even have enough plot for the one they did make.

Finally someone replies! I know it's impossible for it to have a sequel, I just wanted to see if anyone would catch on! :bouncegiggle:
Obviously the 1998 Godzilla left open room for a sequel as did Lost In Space (1998). Probably a good thing we didn't get those though...

The 1998 Godzilla was followed by the animated series, which acts as a direct sequel.

There's a whole category right there - movies intended to launch a franchise that misfired.
Lost in Space is one I kind of wondered about though, whether a sequel might have been better. I thought what really hurt that movie was that it had no focus and just tried to cram too much in. It took half the movie just to get the Robinsons Lost, and then we get the whole story with Future Will and the mutant Smith, as if people getting lost in space wasn't story enough. I'm curious what would have happened if the plot didn't have to shift gears midway through. I thought it was generally a good movie, apart from the choppy plot and a few cartoony moments. And actually, it's the only thing I've found Matt LeBlanc remotely tolerable in.
