Post by: macabre on June 05, 2010, 04:47:33 AM
hi
just sat down with my youngest daughter(5) and gave her the old"when i was your age" speech
you know the one
"when i was your age i didn,t have half the toys you have"
"when i was your age i was always playing outside"

what is your fav "when i was your age" speech to your child?
if you dont have any children .
whats your fav "when i was your age " speech your parents gave you?

if children are "the fruits of our loins" then how comes you can,t eat them?

macabre..

LOL - I just this week overheard my eldest (at almost 21) giving the "when I was your age..." speech to his younger siblings.  I thought I'd never stop choking.

I have no children of my own, but I already know of of the "when I was your age" speaches I'm going to give.  I'm old enough to remember a time when everything wasn't done on the internet.

No kids here, but lots of nieces and nephews. My favorite speech goes something like: "When I was your age, we didn't have VCR's, DVD players, Blu-Ray players, DVR's, Tivo, pay per view, on demand, streaming video or movie rental services of ANY kind. When we wanted to watch a TV show or movie, we checked the TV guide to see what time it was on and we made damn sure to have our butts in front of the TV when it started, otherwise we were SOL."

Lainie Kazan's "When I was your age, we didn't have food" line in My Big Fat Greek Wedding always cracks me up. :teddyr:

I've already given the "when I was your age" speech. I'm only 20. And I was giving it to a 13 year-old. *sigh* My childhood really was radically different from what most kids will grow up with today (what with the internet barely existing at the time and the concept of relying on the various media to provide all your entertainment being a foreign concept).

I like:

"When I was your age, if we wanted to steal music we had to hang out at the record store, preferrably with a lookout, and figure out some way to get a stack of LPs concealed inside our jacket without them falling out or without us being noticed and slip out of the store without being caught."

Music and media in general carries much more value when it's more difficult to steal.

Pizza boxes my friend, a frozen pizza and some glue could do wonders in lifting LP records.

I'm 35 now and have friends in their early 20's and it's strange that I find myself saying a lot to them "When I was your age......" a whole lot.    Getting older is kind of weird.

one of the biggest changes in our society was the advent of the ATM. Many people today have never even set foot in a bank.

I actually read something today that made me think of this thread.  In was in one of the morining comics, where a kid is about to due something stupid.  His mother tells him not to, but he challenges her on it.  Telling her "that because I said so" was not a legitiamate reason.

I NEVER would have gotten away with something like that when I was a kid.  "Because I said so" was a legitmate reason.  Also makes me realize the old nuclear parental phrase "Wait, til your father gets home" has probably lost some of its teeth.

Here's the comic:

I always liked the Bill Cosby bit:

"When your father gets home, he's going to shoot you in the fact with a bazooka. And I am not going to stop him this time."
