In hindsight, when Spock said he wanted to investigate an illogical human custom, McCoy should have asked what the can of Crisco was for.
After a timewarp opened on the bridge and gave him a brief glimpse into the future, McCoy saw what rick berman would do to star trek.

Shortly after this image was taken, McCoy successfully got Starfleet to remove a number of sharp and pointy objects from the bridge so no one else would suffer the agony of landing on such an object wrong.
