Since we have a thread about bands who got famous for cover songs, I'd like to present you with some of my favorite cover songs.
This one is good but not quite up to par with the original. Sill pretty cool, though.
Metallica "The Wait" (Killing Joke)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8t2dJZRRW0
I think this next one supasses the original. Michael Gira's cover is quite good too.
Swans - "Love Will Tear Us Apart" (Joy Division)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F062h9ePl4Q
Another Swans (under the moniker of Skin) cover, this time it's "I Wanna Be Your Dog" (The Stooges)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aILSs1e-FyY
Jesu covering Pink Floyd's "Capter 24"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRxom03uVgE
Can't think of anymore at the moment.
Cool. Some of my faves:

The Damned "Alone Again Or..." (Love)

Heart w/Layne Staley "Ring Them Bells" (Bob Dylan)

Tie Your Mother Down (Queen cover)

Somebody To Love (Jefferson Airplane cover)

"Last Kiss" by Pearl Jam
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0B-hJ_gotc
"Satisfaction" by Devo, covering The Rolling Stones
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jadvt7CbH1o
here's a couple of unlikely gentle acoustic versions of metal/rock songs, that I like a lot
mark kozelek - bad boy boogie (AC/DC)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKt5yZGjDbM
hellsongs - run to the hills (Iron Maiden)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqAVk2c-Rac
Highway Star (Deep Purple Cover)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QefP5XN2U88
White Rabbit (Jefferson Airplane cover)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AUOAGlASRQ
Children of Bodom's Aces high is good, if you're a melodeath metal fan (Except Arch Enemy's version, which sucks! :hatred:)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uK1lMfYX0zo
And two different versions of Fear of the Dark
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzqlvfM7c3k
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rqXewg9be0
As a general rule I detest all cover songs. There are very rare exceptions.
The Cowboy Junkies cover of Sweet Jane is halfway decent. I just like the lazy feel and the spare production.
The Talking Heads cover of Take Me to the River by Al Green and "Teenie" Hodges is outstanding.
Even though I particularly hate it when a band tries to make a punk or metal version of an old song, I actually like the Iron Maiden cover of Jethro Tull's Cross-Eyed Mary better than the original.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcMAM9B7yAA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLKWefsHrxg
"Ball of Confusion" by Anthrax. Original by The Temptations

"Die Die My Darling" by Metallica
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GIisWJJG28
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCvrRCVHgoI
Rage Against the Machine's cover of Minor Threat's "In My Eyes"...
I prefer this to the Supremes...

"Roll Over Beethoven" by The Beatles
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4-16zxVMw0
"Dream Lover" by The Misfits
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xmhgc-LpqQo
Granted it's one of the many revamped misfits with Dez Cadena and Marky Ramone with Jerry Only singing, but I love the cover, regardless.

come to think of it The Cramps didn't do one bad cover. One of the best bands ever.

Tom Petty cover

The Church covering The Beatles
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2zVfpWXU4E
more Church covering Kevin Ayers and Iggy Pop
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLJLCnk2LtM
Not really a good tune or anything but I love how The Residents absolutely butcher the song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUQSLhrU9jk
I love this song. I didn't know it was a cover when I first heard it, but I like it much better than the original by an obscure group called Earth and Fire, although that one's good. Actually, Ghost have a couple of other good covers that I know of:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXVZNIFU44c
cover of the Rolling Stones' tune
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZPZw3SlAvI
Cromagnon (another obscure band) cover; makes me want to wield a large axe and fight other men with large axes.
"Common People" by William Shatner, originally by Pulp

I don't care, I like this one...Circus will back me up on it undoubtedly...

Spider-Man by The Ramones- I assume it's a cover. Technically.

I can't pick. I like them all! (http://i785.photobucket.com/albums/yy139/XWiseHed/smiley-headbanging.gif?t=1267205923)
I don't like the Black Crowes, but I think this is very good version of the Otis Redding song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtLbE3IUY2U
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ao3MEwjywd4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AH54uidCOOA&feature=fvst
Judas Priest covering Fleetwood Mac's "The Green Manalishi" (one of those rare covers that completely trumps the original version in every way, IMHO)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jgNSQlHZJ4
Sonic Youth covering Delaney & Bonnie's "Superstar" (this version is so haunting, so dark, and so creepy, it really brings to the surface how inherently disturbing most love songs are, with their stalker-ish messages of "not being able to live without you" and "can't stop thinking of you" and yada yada yada, when you think about 'em for longer than 5 seconds, most traditional love songs are completely obsessive, psychotic rants that hinge the stability of the singer's sanity and the validity of his identity entirely on their romantic infatuation with the object of obsession... gah)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJ_asbPm26M
Saint Vitus covering Black Flag's "Thirsty & Miserable" (I'm so smitten by the idea of an ultra-slow doom metal band covering an ultra-fast hardcore band, and the result is so fantastic here, I think)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1b1uhno-owE
Rammstein covering The Ramones' "Pet Semetary" (jarring for me at first, but hearring Rammstein do it in their heavily accented style of English has become an ever-reliable way of putting a smile on my face, especially when that great singalong chorus hit)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCaxa2xS3pU
The Cramps covering Little Willie John's "Fever" (used to great effect in the bar slaughter sequence of Near Dark)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbuGWCmbchA
Racer X cover Blue Oyster Cult's "Godzilla" (still can't hold a candle to the original, but still pretty memorable nonetheless, great shredding from this band)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5h8g-0Nazk
Slayer covering Iron Butterfly's "Inna Gadda Da Vida" (holy crap! my favorite thrash band covering one of my favorite classic stoner rock/proto-metal songs? and making it into a terrifying maelstrom that sounds like Satan hisself leading me down into the infernal pit?!? HELL YEAH! ...and they leave out that annoyingly endless drum & organ solo that goes on for what seems like a half a freaking hour? THANK BEELZEBUB!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-E5Uj-4qn9g
Nick Cave covering the traditional murder ballad "Stagger Lee" (debateable whether or not this should be considered a cover in the stricted sense, as this is an age-old folk song that has been re-imaged numerous times before, but this particular version, from Nick Cave'sMurder Ballads album, my favorite of his records, is just fantastic... as is every other song on the album, any one of which could easily be snuck onto this list)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nssw909H8xE
Johnny Cash covering Nick Cave's "The Mercy Seat" (what's good for the goose is goo for the gander, and Nick Cave's own work got a great cover courtesy of the master himself, Johnny Cash... not as well-known as "Hurt" or "God's Gonna Cut You Down" but just as good if you ask me)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8CzFVm1Yio
Echo & The Bunnymen covering The Doors' "People Are Strange" (I heard this version years before I everh eard the original version, thanks mainly to the opening credits of The Lost Boys, to this day it still remains my preferred rendition)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxzhiyQj6zI
Celtic Frost covering Wall Of Voodoo's "Mexican Radio" (Celtic Frost caught a lot of s**t for this rather unconventional cover choice but I think it's great, just weird enough to be fun and still genuinely enjoyable as a song... has enough of the original song to make me want to sing along, but enough metal to make me want to bang my head)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNyvBqPueJA
Emily Browning covering Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams" (I was genuinely surprised when I found out it was Emily Browning singing this, and I was even more surprised by how much I liked her rendition)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcxRtLpkAkQ
Finally, that brings us to my vote for the single best cover of all time...
SOD covering Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze" (rechristened as "The Ballad Of Jimi Hendrix")
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=du0-FdQZ57w&feature=related
Honrable mentions: Bathory - Black Diamond, Marilyn Manson - Sweet Dreams, Xentrix - Ghostbusters, Johnny Cash - Hurt, Johnny Cash - God's Gonna Cut You Down, Johnny Cash - Ghost Riders In The Sky, White Wizzard - Heading Out To The Highway, Metallica - So What?, Reverend Bizarre - The Gates Of Nanna, every other murder ballad on Nick Cave's Murder Ballads album, Jimi Hendri - All Along The Watchtower, Joey Ramone - What A Wonderful World, Bob Dylan (sort of) - Friday (you know you love it), AFI - Last Caress, Placebo - Running Up That Hill, Black Sabbath - Evil Woman, Ozzy Osbourne - 21st Century Schizoid Man, Judas Priest - Diamonds & Rust, Smith - Baby It's You, Demons & Wizards - White Room, the rest of the SOD Ballads
I love cover songs.
