Title: Are we Geeks or Nerds?
Post by: Nukie 2 on July 22, 2010, 09:28:49 AM
Do cult movies, b-movies, and bad movies fall into the geek/nerd galaxy?

In a word: yes.

Then again, ANYTHING that is obsessed upon has a nerd/geek element to it. Somehow, guys that are gearheads, obsessed with cars/bikes/machines/etc., have escaped this classification, but I don't really see a distinction, perhaps because it is a little more socially acceptable? I have a brother-in-law that is obsessed with bikes and cars. He has a vintage Datson project car he's working on and several motorcycles he's constantly tinkering with. We, however, are obsessed with b-movies. I don't see a big difference.

But then again some of make parties or drinking games with these movies, and riff on them. So that's not really the nerdiest thing in the world.

How come Heavy Metal isn't nerdy, songs about castles, knights, vikings, mythical creatures, all done with as much technical precision as much as band can muster, or in some cases weaving the proper atmosphere.

Who says it's not nerdy?  In high school I thought many of the metal fans were nerds who were just trying to look like tough guys.

Here's an interesting chart I discovered:

If we're all obsessed with b-movies then we could be either geeks, dorks or nerds depending on our intelligence and social skills.  Just don't call us dweebs!

What?

Dennis is a nerd?  Newt is a nerd?  Mofo Rising is a nerd?

I'm a nerd?

I'm married to a woman who likes nerds, so life is good here.

Can't we just like b-movies without being something ?  :drink:

Well throughout high school, I was called a geek. Personally I'd rather be a geek or nerd than a jock anyday.

Nope. We also have to be something.

I'd say the biggest difference is that when he gets his Datsun running again, he might actually be able to go on a date.  :twirl:

I've always been somewhere between a nerd and a geek. My social skills have improved tremendously since high school, but I'm still not "cool" by any stretch. Although a few of my daughter's friends thought it was cool when I pulled out my Nintendo DS and started playing a game. "Whoa! Your dad plays video games?!?!?" I was playing video games before they were born; why shouldn't I now?  :tongueout:

And Andrew, no, you're not really a nerd; you're a Marine. But I'm not sure whether I should be hurt that you didn't consider it odd that someone called me a nerd.

If being called a 'nerd' is the price of admission to a list that includes Dennis, Mofo Rising and Andrew...so be it.

But I wish someone had told me.

Hm, actually based on that diagram, I am a dweeb.  I tend to associate "nerd" with math and science (and I hate math and science) but I suppose it would extend to literary or movie obsession; funny how, despite my social awkwardness, I never really thought about it before.

NO, everyone must be assigned a label or the world will collapse into anarchy!

I flaunt my nerdiness or geekiness daily though I don't think I look the part.

I think all you guys are cool!  I thought I was a nerd, but the other nerds wouldn't hang out with me, so I guess I'm not.  I don't bite the heads off of chickens, so I'm not a geek.

I've always thought of nerds as the socially inept,  I think Geekdom is more about  obsession over something.  I'm sure most people think I'm perfectly normal until something like Movies, Star Trek, or Science Fiction become part of the discussion.

I'm a dork.

I don't have too much in the way of intelligence...

I must be a nerd.  Every time Jack mentions his router I mentally picture a woodworking device.
If I were a geek, I would think automatically of computer electronics - right?

I always considered myself a nerd.  But, most anything associated with geekdom: Star Trek, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Dungeons and Dragons, Chess, computers, math, well, I know nothing about.  Never been interested.

I'm not a nerd, as while I was in the gifted classes, I wasn't one of those that could do a lot of stuff.

But, I have a few "Geek" things.  I like Comic Books (but I'm not an EXPERT, so I couldn't sit there with a group of comic nerds and talk about them.)  I like pro wrestling, and I sorta obsess about stupid stuff.

In school, I didn't fit in with any group.  Too 'normal' for the geeks/nerds, not a jock, etc.  I dunno.

Well if we're going back to high school, I was the class clown, but I was also a punk rocker long after the people in Black Flag got full-time jobs, but before it got snatched up teeny magazines with Blink 182. So that mean't I was friends with Skaters, Goths, Metal-heads... so I guess I was a "freak". I dunno.
