Title: Anyone else getting the new Showa Gamera DVD?
Post by: daveblackeye15 on August 21, 2010, 05:23:15 PM
I just got Gamera and Gamera vs Barugon (my Showa favorite!)

And they're in Japanese and they got commentary and booklets on the movies!

Now this is more like it! Okay Gamera was the pale imitation of Godzilla and-oh snap I just put in Gamera vs Barugon and the play menu is very good!

G. vs B. is the best Showa, Barugon is no Gyaos but it's got the best atmosphere and needs more love. And it did set up the formula of 'monster beats Gamera, military tries a few plans, then Gamera kills the monster.' And no kids!

I already pre-ordered the next few sets where it looks like they will be two for one sets, hopefully the extras aren't cut down.

Is this the Shout Factory DVD? If so, the ultimate American authority on Japanese monsters, August Ragone, had a huge hand in helping this come out.

Ragone also wrote the book Eiji Tsuburaya:Master Of Monsters which is a pretty definitive look at Toho in it's heyday of science fiction and horror.
