Title: Need some input on REALLY bad movies
Post by: Huskeonkel on September 06, 2010, 06:56:51 PM
Hello all

A friend and I have this nerdy competition, where we give each other lousy movies, and whoever presents the other with the worst one wins a slew of beers. :) Needless to say, we are having loads of fun watching and laughing at them.

We have a few simple rules.

1. No Ed Wood movies (too easy)
2. No movies from the IMDB bottom 100
3. They must be in English and in DVD format

I recently stumbled across this website, and I thought that if anyone could offer me some great tips for bad movies, it would be people here. But let me give you an example of how bad I'm talking about:

Once I found this movie called "Horror Express", where the gist of the synopsis was that an alien artifact on board the Orient Express turns all the passengers into rampaging zombies. I thought it would be a shoo-in, but I lost hands down that time, because the movie featured actors Christopher Lee and Telly Savalas. Their acting skills, while far from Oscar worthy, were still good enough to boost the quality of the otherwise lousy film. That and the fact that I was up against "Robot Monster", which is just a momentously bad movie.

Acting, story, dialogue, camera work, special effects, sound aso. all matter in finding the worst of the two.

So, if you have any good suggestions, I'd be happy to hear them

Thanks

The movie: Return of the Boogeyman (1994) (V)

You'll win the slew of beers after the 6th time the radio falls into the bathtub (this scene has been repeated almost 20 times) really...

Star Crash Bog, Skeleton Man, Weasels Ripped My Flesh, Wild Guitar, Arachnia, Psyclops, The Room, Mega Piranha, and of course Nukie (which is on DVD in Africa).

There a lot the worst movie sever made that aren't on DVD, they've stayed on VHS for the very reason that they're too bad.

Check out Andrew's Reviews (http://www.badmovies.org/movies/) and take a look at the ones marked with a skull.  You might finds some that meet your criteria.  Also, single slime ones might be worth a look, too.

As for ones not on THAT list, the two I'd recommend fail your DVD requirement (assuming that you are Region 1).  But, here they are anyway, just in case you get to a point to relax that rule.

PLEDGE NIGHT (1990): available as a Region 2 DVD or VHS, this movie really bad.  It's got a special place in my heart, however, since my wife and I watched this on our first date.   :teddyr:

MANKILLERS (1987): really bad DIRTY DOZEN rip-off with women; super super bad fx and acting (and direction and sound design and, well everything about this movie is bad).  VHS only at this point, though.

I've had MANIAC (1934) on the mind lately, and it fits most of your criteria.  Not currently in the bottom 100, in English and on DVD.  The acting is some of the worst you'll ever see, and most people seem to think the story is awful (though I consider it a work of near-genius). It involves reanimation of the dead, cat skinning, eyeball-eating, madness, an orangutan-man rapist, and a man impersonating a mad scientist. Dialogue is overwrought and hilarious.  Special effects... you'll have to judge for yourself, you could argue they were either bad or good for the time.

I like how the mad scientist in that movie talks right into the camera about what he's doing, the only reason he does this is because he's insane!

For some reason, it seams that I'm the only person on the planet who actually liked Timbo Hines' version of War of the Worlds, & strangely enough, for all the same reasons everyone else hated it, even on this board.

Either of these should do the job:

That second one is Princess Warrior, since the title on the box is kind of unreadable.

If you can find a copy, I suggest The Legend of the Titanic.  That'll make you win easily.  Bratz could also work if you want to induce pain on this person.

But if we are talking b-movies; Troll 3, After Last Season, Kong Island, Garbage Pail Kids, and Octopus 2.

Terror Toons. I've gotten punch by a few friends because I made them sit through it. Wow its awful.

Octopus 2 is pretty horrible as well. I did love the part where he fought the statue of liberty though.

Actually, the octopus was just climbing the statue and not fighting it, though it did break off the head.  Also,  that was a dream sequence, so even if that seen was cool, it was pretty much ruined in my view.

Try CURSE OF THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN or Lucio Fulci's CONQUEST.  Both are horrible.  I couldn't even get through CONQUEST in a single viewing.  I had to watch it in 15 - 30 minute increments over a period of several weeks (maybe even months).

As far as Fulci goes, Contraband was one hell of an FX-laden mafia shoot-em-up. AND it starred Italian film legend Fabio Testi as well. One of the more violent films from the Godfather Of Gore.

And for a fairly atmospheric (yet talky) horror film, I always got quite a few shivers from Beyond The Door.  Juliet Mills' face was one of the most disturbing things I've seen since the dead witch in Mario Bava's Black Sabbath.  There was more they could have done with BTD, but the possession scenes more than make up for the slack.

The 1958 vampire outing The Return Of Dracula is  good solid movie too. Frances Lederer throws in a good performance as count Bellac, which just happens to be a front for who he really is, good old count Drac'.    More movies as I think of them.

I love Conquest.  Everytime I see it referenced it is slammed, but to me it is up there with the best of Fulci.  I especially enjoy the evil topless villianess and the hilarious beast people running amok.  This movie has a lot of energy, and it was probably made to exploit the underbelly of the "Quest for Fire" .  What is funny is that those are very highbrow scientificly researched movie and this is pure schlock.  OK I think I need to go watch this one right now

My thoughts exactly. :bouncegiggle:

You may want to try The Brain Eaters, which is about hairy roombas with antennea that ride a giant drill machine up from the center of the earth to enslave humanity (the way that they do it reminds me a little of The Puppet Masters by Robert Heinlein). It happens to feature a younger Leonard Nemoy. Excuse me, Nimoy :teddyr:
