I think we've touched on this in discussions of worst songs and treacly, sentimental songs, but I don't think we've explored it directly. Which songs do we find just really depressing? They can be songs we hate, songs we like, even songs that are not overtly gloomy, but really depressing on close examination.
I'll start with the song that inspired this thread, which I heard playing in a restaurant during lunch the other day.
1. Terry Jacks - Seasons in the Sun
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cd_Fdly3rX8
Probably the gloomiest song ever to have "joy" and "fun" as two of its most repeated lyrics.
2.) Kansas - Dust In The Wind
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tH2w6Oxx0kQ
Aka we are just a speck of sand in the universe.
Let's see you top this one:

I was planning to post that one next. Just about the most depressing rock song I know.
4. Christmas Shoes - Newsong I absolutely loathe this song!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNsvE33pRSw
5. Evanescence~ Missing
qpxHzZ11qLo
I can only take evanescence in small doses, too much and I want to open a vein. :teddyr:
6. Anathema - Lost Control
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGTeNwt1BMY&feature=related
I hate depressive music
anyway, here's one of the most depressing song I ever heard
7. Gilbert O'Sullivan - Alone Again (Naturally)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhQgta94IG8&feature=related
Without a doubt, the bounciest, catchiest song ever written about a guy planning to jump off a building. I especially like how he spreads out from being stood up at his wedding and abandoned by everyone, to include the totally unrelated story of his father's death and his mother grieving until her own death. And then, having described all this sadness so matter-of-factly, he just stops.
8.) Harry Nilsson - Without You
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTMY_idZcjY
The pain of one leaving is great to Mr. Nilsson. You can actually feel the pain in his voice.
QuoteI was planning to post that one next. Just about the most depressing rock song I know.
I recall a Family Guy episode where Peter wonders around town in a montage in a sad mood to the song.
9.) NIN - Down In It
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrcTsxs-anU
Very up tempo and catchy song about losing one's self.
10.) Metallica - Fade To Black
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEQnzs8wl6E
Kind of overly melodramatic, almost to the point of being funny.
11.) Sarah McLauglan - When Somebody Loved Me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=px0j1EHF8Y0
This one rips out my heart and stomps on it because I think of Jessie in Toy Story 2. I can hardly watch the above clip without getting misty eyed. My four year old knows the song word for word and sings it a lot. Luckily I can control my emotions when hearing it.
12. All By Myself- Eric Carmen
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQAT0Ln6ggc
13. Michael Johnson - Bluer Than Blue
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdDSJ2NddyE
14. Cat's in the Cradle - Cat Stevens

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAsV5-Hv-7U
16.) Don Henley - Boys Of Summer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HeNmZ1-Svzc
I hear this song and simply think this time of year...the sad end of summer. :bluesad:
17.) Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQVeaIHWWck
Breaktaking yet so melancholy.
18. In the Year 2525 by Zager & Evans
and no, I won't post a link to it. I refuse to listen to that song and will change the station whenever it comes on.
19.) NIN - Hurt
The JC version really makes me sad...lyrics seems to fit him at that point in his life.

24.) Elvis - In The Ghetto
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ox1Tore9nw

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PC6OJOHGmv8
27. The Beatles - Yesterday

No 28) Millencolin - The Ballad
29. An old Cantonese song, ever time I hear it, I feel upset
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJLPsV291d0
30. Frankie Laine - "Swamp Girl" Suicide has never swung like it did in this swamp!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FDXwoB5jOI
31. Swans/World Of Skin - Breathing Water
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DueDPS_62Xk
Could've picked just about any Swans songs - most of them are unbelievably depressing - but this is one of my faves.
32. Saying Good-Bye from Muppets Take Manhattan

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWaxmP1LMK4

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5Ts4M3irWM
35. Green day- Holiday
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_U2K1ski728
Let me explain- When this album came out, I always listened to it, then Katrina hit, and even though I was still listening it (I was in Houston), this song always makes me cry as I remember those 4 3/4 months I wasn't in NOLA :bluesad:
36. I Can't Stop Loving You by Ray Charles
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5FpVZw6rSs
I apologize. This is the only video that had the right verison of the song I was looking for. The only verisons I could find were the ending of Metropolis and that had everything else playing over the song.
37.) Kenny Rogers - Lucille (you B!TCH, you SL*T, you WH*RE!!!)

38) AIC - Don't Follow (knowing the way Layne's life ended makes it even worse)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBB2OS4IoTs

Funny, I just recently found a funny video using that very song. A guy who thought it might be convenient to get his head waxed instead of shaving it every day.
http://www.videosurf.com/video/head-waxing-83428934?vlt=ffext&vlt_position=rightrail (http://www.videosurf.com/video/head-waxing-83428934?vlt=ffext&vlt_position=rightrail)
And yes, I found this because I had the same idea, or rather my wife's hairdresser suggested it. But after watching about a dozen similar videos, I'll stick to shaving. :teddyr: Pity though, the results do look good.
I will say to this guy's credit that he got through the whole process, and handled the pain a lot more calmly than most of the others.
BIG STAR "Holocaust"

48.) When The Children Cry - White Lion
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHZ79InLGRY
So depressing its almost funny.
I'm not sure I count this one as depressing as much as just sad (there is a difference to me), but I think this (and several other) Hank Williams songs deserve mention
49. Hank Williams - "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"

50. I'm not in love- 10cc

64. Remember Me This Way - Jordan Hill
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOFGa_4quiU
This song always makes me sad. I think within the context of the film it's a very sad song, but it reminds me a lot of a friend of mine who passed away about the time I saw this movie.
65. Don't Speak- No Doubt

I see one song from that album, I'll put another
67. Slipknot- Dead Memories
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kP5PqJpk5lQ&ob=av2e
anything with Slipknot, to me, is all depressing because of Paul Gray's death
68?) Kiss-I Still Love You

"White Dress" by Kenny Marks
(Couldn't find it on Youtube, even though I know there's a video for it.)
Anyway, Marks is a Christian Music artist, but don't let that fool you, the song doesn't really have anything to do with religion (at least not that I can see). It's just a very, VERY sad story. If you want to read the lyrics, you can click here:
http://en.allexperts.com/q/Christian-Music-2785/2008/4/song-1.htm (http://en.allexperts.com/q/Christian-Music-2785/2008/4/song-1.htm)
I warn ya though, even without the music it's a pretty sad story, more so cause it happens a lot I'm sure.

71. Shannon- Henry Gross
If you're a dog lover this MIGHT strike a chord with you.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kSrV_CubiQ&feature=related
I generally really dig Dan Tyminski as an artist/musician, but absolutely cannot listen to "Please Dear Mommy;" it's a song about a little girl who kills herself because her parents are fighting.
Lyrics: http://www.cowboylyrics.com/lyrics/tyminski-dan/please-dear-mommy-25530.html
I always thought Bryan Adam's "Summer of 69" was really depressing, but then again, maybe that's just me.

Funny, I always thought it was uplifiting because he's reflecting on a fun time. Kind of like Bruce Springstein in Glory Days.

I've always found that song amusing because Bryan Adams was born November 5, 1959. That means all his reminiscing is for his summer as a 9-year-old.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HUr9UKAxiY&ob=av2e
83.) "Memories" by Weezer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BApLIldPAds
Memories kinda makes me sad. Makes me wish I was younger again, instead of having to be grown up, with responsibilities, bills to pay, all that stress, etc. :bluesad:
Many love/breakup songs always make me depressed. This is one of them:
84) Def Leppard-Love Bites
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQSkIFhuli0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GluCM_ggMvw
86) Tiamat- Cold Seed
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6_AjxwBUw0
87) Lacuna Coil- Our Truth
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8ucKaYr7h4
88) Moevot-Wolken, Ma Vie
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UTT2jLf26qQ
Most of Moevot's material is very dark or depressing. I personally consider this instrumental piece to be one of the most depressing musical compositions that has ever been written. It's almost as if it takes you in to a whole new realm of advanced sorrow.
89) Obscura Monotomia Animae-Chante D'eternite I and II (Moevot cover)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSy3DsIXFEY
Take both of Moevot's "Chantes", add a gregorian twist and you get this. Truly some dark stuff.
90. Prince Ali (Reprise)
I pick it as depressing because at this point we have Jafar finally defeating the hero and rubbing it in his face as he reveals Aladdin's true identity.

92: Running Towards the Days of our Future (A Better Tomorrow 2 theme)

(The song doesn't really depress me; I just change the channel)
94) Stevie Wonder-They Won't Go When I Go
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5tT3JS4myE
95) Samuel Barber-Adagio for Strings
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dPDO3Tfab0
Supposedly the saddest piece of music ever written. I definitely believe that. Remember earlier when I said that Moevot's music takes you into another realm of sorrow? Take those feelings and multiply them by a million and you get Adagio for Strings.
96. Love Is Blue- Paul Mauriat
This doesn't have the lyrics, here's a sample:
Blue, blue, my love is blue
Blue is my world now I'm without you
Grey, grey, my life is grey
Cold is my heart since you've gone away
Depressing, no?
