I think we've touched on this in discussions of worst songs and treacly, sentimental songs, but I don't think we've explored it directly. Which songs do we find just really depressing? They can be songs we hate, songs we like, even songs that are not overtly gloomy, but really depressing on close examination.

I'll start with the song that inspired this thread, which I heard playing in a restaurant during lunch the other day.

Without a doubt, the bounciest, catchiest song ever written about a guy planning to jump off a building. I especially like how he spreads out from being stood up at his wedding and abandoned by everyone, to include the totally unrelated story of his father's death and his mother grieving until her own death. And then, having described all this sadness so matter-of-factly, he just stops.

This one rips out my heart and stomps on it because I think of Jessie in Toy Story 2. I can hardly watch the above clip without getting misty eyed. My four year old knows the song word for word and sings it a lot. Luckily I can control my emotions when hearing it.

Funny, I just recently found a funny video using that very song. A guy who thought it might be convenient to get his head waxed instead of shaving it every day.

And yes, I found this because I had the same idea, or rather my wife's hairdresser suggested it. But after watching about a dozen similar videos, I'll stick to shaving. :teddyr: Pity though, the results do look good.

I will say to this guy's credit that he got through the whole process, and handled the pain a lot more calmly than most of the others.

This song always makes me sad. I think within the context of the film it's a very sad song, but it reminds me a lot of a friend of mine who passed away about the time I saw this movie.

I generally really dig Dan Tyminski as an artist/musician, but absolutely cannot listen to "Please Dear Mommy;" it's a song about a little girl who kills herself because her parents are fighting.

I've always found that song amusing because Bryan Adams was born November 5, 1959. That means all his reminiscing is for his summer as a 9-year-old.

Most of Moevot's material is very dark or depressing. I personally consider this instrumental piece to be one of the most depressing musical compositions that has ever been written. It's almost as if it takes you in to a whole new realm of advanced sorrow.
