Title: The hate for Twilight?
Post by: Doctor X. on October 15, 2010, 06:13:39 PM
Man I was at a convention recently and saw a lot of "I hate twilight" shirts, with bela lugosi ripping off that edward's head and a caption reading "The sparkling stops now" and cartoons of the count from sesame street beating up edward, "real vampires don't sparkle" shirts and so on.

I get the idea a lot of people really hate twilight. Never watched it myself. Anyone else notice the twilight hate?

Oh, as to the movie "Vampires suck" all I can say is so does that movie and the entire production crew.

This is the internet. How have you not been bludgeoned over the head with both love and hate for Twilight?

Same as Gravekeeper, haven't you been on the Internet before?  This place is a breeding ground for hatred of Twilight, Miley Cryus, Justin Bieber, and whatever lame trend is going on!

I don't hate TWILIGHT, but I must admit that I scoff at it.  And I do this VERY unfairly because I've never read the books or seen the movies.  A form of movie bigotry, perhaps?  Same with HARRY POTTER.  Some day, I will see these movies and/or read the books.  And I will probably enjoy at least a few of them.

Well I've seen one movie and read chunks of the first book, and I still scoff at it.

I've never seen any of the Twilight movies and I'm quite content to keep it that way.  I always enjoy the backlash against whatever is super-popular with the 'tweens these days, it gives me some vague hope for the future.

The count from Sesame Street beating up Edward would make a pretty cool T-shirt.  Either that or Alucard or Alexander from Hellsing

But I hear you on that; as much as I dislike Twilight (with my reasons laid out in the earlier Twilight thread) the backlash against it is getting pretty stupid/excessive too.  I can remember when the ComiCon fanboys were bashing it before it even came out and the general attitude seemed to be "girls like this, therefore it sucks."  Can't we just like what we like and not beat other people over the head with it?  Oh, wait, this is the internet, so no.

Theres another thread somewhere on this.  I will only say these films need to be taken in by every member of this site.   They are possibly the worst ever and of course the books are to blame.

I've never read or watched anything involved in the Twilight series.  As such, I am remaining neutral on the whole situation.  I'll watch the movies after they are all out on DVD so I can do the ultimate reviewathon.

Now are any of these films the worst vampire movies?  Nope, because they are not vampires from my understanding and from I've heard.  They are nothing like vampires and are more like dolppergangers trying to act like vampires, so these are not vampire movies.  As such, the worst vampire movie remains to be Die Hard Dracula.

I dunno, what irks me about the books is that after spending four books building up it seems that main message or lesson is: it's good to wait until you're married and have sex.

Now I don't dislike that message, I mean it's old fashioned and I don't shame anyone that believes in that, but I also think teach sex ed and protection is very important for young people to know too.

However what gets to me is that with one tiny decent message there's dozens of negatives message going on at the same time. Such as it's okay for Edward to be sneaking into his girlfriend's room at night, or it's okay that he breaks her car so she can't see her friends. Basically it's okay to be in an abusive relationship as long as he loves you...and you dont' have sex with him until after you're married.

Kind of reminds me of that Ren and Stimpy cartoon with Powdered Toast Man, a cat is about to get hit by a big semi, so Toast Man grabs an airplane and crashes it into the truck, saving the kitten. Oh hey the cat is fine but hundreds of people are injured! Then again it was played for laughs and those in the wreck were cheering for his heroics but still that's how I see it.

Indifference is how things fail. The more you hate on it and bring attention to it, the more it succeeds. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. Just let it alone and it will eventually go away, or, if it doesn't, you won't be subjected to it because you turn a blind eye.

Personally, I've watched them when they roll around on cable because, and this is probably the third time I've said this, they're b-movies with a budget, and I think they're atrociously bad. If I watch them on that level, they're worth a few yucks and I move on.

lol...

I don't hate movies that easy... it usually takes a lot for me to hate a movie. My peeve is when I know there is no excuse for the movie being "bad"... Phantom Menace and Godfather 3 has no excuse (big budget, good track history from previous films, actors, filming crew, etc.), therefore those movies will always be on my attack list.

Years ago I was starting to hate the remake explosion but I have not been watching too many new films to really care anyway. Although I've seen the new Friday the 13th and was quite surprised how bad they made the movie.

I have not read twilight series or seen any of the films. It seems the book is targeted for females or gays (Joking), actually the series seems to be 90210 meets Buffy, I'd figured this from the commercials I have seen from the first and second film. It's just something I don't want to see unless I was stuck in a party and had no choice.

Also, I've seen enough vampire movies and many are not much of a surprise, that I have actually classified them into 3 types:

Gothic (Hammer, Bela Lugosi, Nosferatu, The Fearless Vampire Killers, Fright Night, Lesbian Vampire Killers, Love at First Bite, The Night Stalker) ~ typically there's a castle or large house, the standards (wooden stake, coffin, bat, smoke, lore, etc) and the male/female vampire has a sexual attraction towards their prey. A very common vampire story from the start of motion picture the 1980's; not commonly produced today but they do creek out every so many years.

Nosferatu (Nosferatu, Salem's Lot, Alien Prey, Dead of Night, Queen of Blood, Lifeforce, Vamp) ~ The vampire is alien, demonic or monstrous. Humans are their prey and these vampires display very little or almost no emotion. I would also point out this is the most rare of the vampire movies. Although Nosferatu is Dracula the vampire appearance looked more demonic then human, also I'd would to call it "the Vampire of Salem's Lot" but it would be silly since the vampire looked like Nosferatu. Nosferatu is also gothic by nature.

Emo (Martin, Near Dark, The Lost Boys, Buffy, Subspecies, Underworld, Blade, Innocent Blood, The Hunger, Let the Right One In) ~ These vampires are emotional, at times they are super emotional and at times they are also the good guy (although not often); they sometimes do follow the traditional vampire rules, although I have find them remaking the whole vampire lore (limited abilities, ability to walk around in daylight, don't need 'soil' for sleep, etc.) as if the concept of Gothic vampires are just a fairytale and their take is 'realistic' and 'modern' and because it has a 'realistic and modern' feel it seemed logical (Hollywood-wise) to keep making vampire films fitting this theme. Currently most of the 'new' vampire movies are Emo; therefore Twilight isn't much of a shocker for me.

Good for you. Way to not care.

Then again I'm in a good mood this week and next week I may be back to complaining about s**t. But for now, BRING ON THE WHIMSY.

I don't hate Twilight at all.  I saw the first movie, haven't seen the second or I think 3rd that have been released.  Although, I have a copy of the second laying around.

I don't hate it primarily because I watched it knowing it's nothing more than a romance novel/movie written primarily for teen girls/women in their early '20s.  It's not SUPPOSED to be liked by men (well, straight).  Which, I suppose is why the background of the vampires is altered slightly (sparkling? really), etc.

Taking that into consideration, I don't dislike the premise of the series.  I just avoid it as it's not really marketed to me.  It doesn't interest you, don't watch it or concern yourself with hating something.

But that's my two cents.

Yup... I'm sure Blade will teach Mr. Sparkle a lesson lol.

IMO the best vampires -

Bela Lugosi (Dracula) Do I really need to tell you why?
Gary Oldman (Bram Stoker's Dracula) The music the atmosphere, great Dracula movie!
Jerry Dandrige (Fright Night) I hope the Fright Night remake (2011) will be good. Lets hope.

I like the premise of Count Orlock.  Not attractive or fancy, he is just going to kill you to live.  I tend to gravitate more toward vampires along those lines.
