I'm not sure if this falls into bad or good movies, because I've never seen it.
In a flash I had a childhood memory about the 1978 film The Fury. It was just one of those memories where I remember seeing a paperback copy of the book, being kind of freaked out by the cover illustration, and knowing that it had recently been released as a movie. So I looked it up, and it's a bit of a horror/psych thriller type of film with Kirk Douglas, Amy Irving, and John Cassavettes. The childhood memory flash suddenly made me interested in this film.
Has anybody here seen this one? If so, your comments, please.
A few times...
I would rank it almost equal to Scanners... I like them both although Fury seems to connect the idea of an underground assassin corporation... which is a good idea, although the movie starts becoming a low budget bad movie thriller when Kirk Douglas is being chased and his *weak* efforts in Gillian's escape. Although there's that typical Brian De Palma scene where all we get is music in a soundless environment. (it's fun watching the facial expressions but it actually hurts the flow of the story)
Not too far from what I envisioned, Skull, thank you. So it sounds like it's visually pretty cool but with some bad movie elements. Nothing wrong with that. I'll see if it's streaming on NetFlix, although that's unlikely.
I saw it a few years ago. I don't remember much before the ending, but I do remember laughing heartily, and also being very sad.
The ending is pretty awesome for a 70's flick, Scanners seem to take much from this movie.
I saw it during its original theatrical release and I had a VHS copy years ago. It's okay, but overall a disappointment. Other than a few "shocking" scenes (which aren't shocking at all by today's standards) it's below average. I try to watch it again every 5 - 10 years hoping it will get better, but it doesn't.
I own the DVD and love this flick. De Palma simply took the Carrie theme a step further and pretty much made "Carrie" for adults.
Some call it underrated, others seem to dislike it. The Fury is many things though and hard to categorize genre wise. It has all the typical De Palma visuals including slow-mo action and probably one of the most impressive endings ever.
I just enjoy this movie for what it is. For a double dose of 'Kirk Douglas does Horror' pair it with Holocaust 2000 (1977) retitled "Rain of Fire." :smile:
I've always liked The Fury but I do also have to admit that it is a bit of an acquired taste.
John Cassavettes' career really exploded after this movie and Kirk Douglas had the cheek to be in it. :teddyr: :teddyr:

Oh my God, that scene is hilarious. I love the multiple camera angles when Cassavettes explodes. I've never gotten around to seeing this but now it's at the top of the list.
