So, this is interesting, I was reading an article on Yahoo about the film Nutcracker 3D which was just released (dunno if it's playing in my area or not.) And, so far, the reviews have not been positive. Article title even uses the word "Horrible" to describe it.
Wow... I have to say, I'm surprised. I saw the trailer for this film on a recent movie I rented (think Iron Man 2 but I'm not sure) and it kind of looked like it'd be a good family film, lots of action, good vs evil, the classic Nutcracker story, even had Elle Fanning (Dakota's little sister) as the main character. (Yeah, the "rat noses" on the bad guys looked cheesy as hell, but still.)
Among the films contents, the article states, it includes, "There's also singing and dancing. A little kung fu. An electrocuted shark and at least one beheading." Perhaps maybe the film's a bit too dark for something based on a classic Christmas story?
Dunno, but it'll be interesting if it falls under the "critics hated it but it later developed a cult following" a la The Black Cauldron, or a "Everyone hated it, and it was quickly forgotten" like Delgo. (Which, come to think of it, did that film EVER get a DVD release?)
Checked Netflix, and yes, it did.
Anyway, thoughts?
Here's the trailer, if anyone's interested.

It looks like it would be fun. I guess for the critics to like it it would need older hotter female actress , female nudity   and lots of explosions   .
I would watch. Might be a little to intense for my young ones, but something my wife and I could enjoy.
Later,
John
I heard about this too and I'm rather curious. Could this possibly be worst than The Last Airbender? My my, this is a rather interesting turn of events. I'll keep an eye on this for future events.

Ah ha! I thought the girl looked familiar. She looks just like her sister when she was in The Cat in the Hat!
At the moment it's got a perfect 0% positive out of 19 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes :teddyr:
I had my eye one it. I wish it would play around here, but I'll probably have to wait for DVD.
This review (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/11/23/MVREVPC1GDMLE.DTL#ixzz16t5sRQy6) from the San Francisco Chronicle got me interested: ". Imagine watching Tchaikovsky's ballet after taking a handful of peyote - on a day when all of the dancers call in sick and the orchestra decides to play a different set of the composer's works... with all of its abstract strangeness, it's also possible to imagine a strong following 30 years from now. Audiences didn't know what to think about the unsettling weirdness of Jim Henson's 'The Dark Crystal' or Walter Murch's 'Return to Oz' either when they came out in the 1980s."
Wow! Just Wow! After a year of remakes and sequels, I certainly look forward to seeing this, even if it is something of a remake in itself. So, I'll just have to watch and see if it comes to the city where I live.
For not only will I see it, as I find it interesting in and of itself, but I might even enjoy it, if it is half as enjoyable as either "The Dark Crystal" and/or "Return to Oz," which I both liked quite alot.
Thanks for the heads up, BTM.
So, wait, they took out the graceful dances and gorgeous music and left in bits of the story? Even though the dancing and the music were the reasons people went to see the ballet in the first place?
Eh. I might rent it. It could be interesting in a weird abstract kind of way, or it could make for some fun riffing material.
That trailer makes it look awful. Not a single note works in it. Just awful. It looks like one of those bad ultra low budget Christmas family films that used to go straight to video in the early 90s got a $50 million dollar budget.
Time to bring this topic back! Guess what? It has finally hit DVD and should be onDemand. I haven't seen it yet, but will at some point. I'm thinking it could be my Christmas movie review.
So until I see it, anyone else want to get in on the suck and see what it's like?

InfoGeek, I saw that NUTCRACKER 3D had been released (under a new title---coincidence?), and I immediately thought of you as the person who should take one for the team and watch this atrocity.
Wow. I forgot all about this from last year. I never watched the posted trailer and I just did. That looks bad beyond words. I'm glad they changed the title so as not to sully the name of a traditional holiday ballet that I happen to enjoy (say what you will). I never saw The Last Airbender because it looked so bad and because I trusted the negative press. This looks every bit as bad as that, if not worse.

OH! I'm soooo honored that you thought I be the right guy to see this. :tongueout: You know, thinking about it, I'm pretty the only one on this site without a kid who is willing to watch a crappy kids movie (how else do I explain watching the animated Titanic films, Standing Ovation, and now this).

I'll be the judge of that!
Also, the movie is still currently holding at 0% on Rotten Tomatoes with a total of 29 reviews. Ouch.

If you take this one for the team, you will definitely jump up in my esteem.

It's still THE NUTCRACKER, they just changed it from THE NUTCRACKER 3D to THE NUTCRACKER: THE UNTOLD STORY.
IMDB suggests this cost $90 million to make, and raked in a mighty $200,000 at the box office :buggedout:.

Wow ... that ... that was bad. It's as if someone purposely tried to make the absolute worst movie trailer of all time.
I don't know....the trailer didn't help much....I might rent it. I just can't get into all this 3D stuff. I don't really need it to enjoy a film.
I love how the trailer says "From one of the most beloved stories of all times" then cuts to the people in jet packs.
A steampunk nutcracker could be cool, but this looks like a spy kids wannbe.

Okay, I watched the damn movie. You happy? I watched the entire piece of crap in one sitting to boot! I better get something out of this...
Anyhow, my thoughts on the movie. Yep, it sucked. No doubt about it. This movie was utter garbage. First of all, it is a complete failure in being a adaptation of the original ballet. It barely even goes over any of the points of the original piece. It uses some of the music, but that is not enough. Here's a bit of the review I'm working on for my Christmas piece:
QuoteThey enter the living room to discover everything has grown giant size. Okay, now we are actually hitting some points from the ballet. Though that instantly goes away when we meet the cast of the dollhouse, a monkey from Planet of the Apes wearing a suit, an opera singing clown, and a Jamaican drummer. Again, weird. With them rounded up, Mary and NC climb to the top of the Christmas tree in the living room to meet with the Snow Fairy, who requests of her to help them defeat the Rat Queen, who had placed the Nutcracker under a terrible curse. Then suddenly, NC turns into a real boy because... Mary... Ah... because the movie said so and that had to do with Mary for some reason.
Besides the plot, the acting is a joke. Everyone is over the top [not in a fun way either], underacting, or mugging their way through the piece with execption of Elle Fanning (She's easily the best actor in the whole thing, but that isn't say much). The CGI is completely unconvincing and is intergrated in poorly. Instead of dancing, we have musical numbers and all which are terrible; Nathan Lane must never sing again. The weirdest thing about this film is the overall tone to it. It really doesn't feel like a kids' film at all with its dark atmosphere, weird imagery, violence, and other things.
I liked some of the set design, some costumes, and an occasional make-up; but that's it. This movie is just plain bad. I'm not as angry as I have been with other films before in the past, but doesn't change the fact that I never want to see this film again. It might be an interesting film to do a riff on (plenty of material, no doubt about it), but still not worth it.
Overall, I give a 2 out of 10. Not the worst film of the 2010 though, since Standing Ovation was far worst than thing.
I have a new found respect for InformationGeek after surviving through that in one sitting

You're tempting me to review it. Though it doesn't fit in with my other reviews. Most of my reviews are of old schlock or terrible horror comedies. Maybe I could use a change of pace?
Oh who am I kidding? Schlock is one thing, blowing millions of dollars on a piece of s**t almost always guarantees a boring bad.

Review it. It is the holidays and I need, no, demand someone else around here watch this thing.
The thing is... this movie isn't boring. It was too silly and ridiculous not to stare at. I was fully paying attention to it the entire time. I couldn't keep my eyes off of it, because I never knew when something else unpredictable and stupid would happen.
