That was some really boring, really dull footage. About what I expected from a live action anime film. They're always friggin' boring for some reason.
And the Japanese thing of showing faces from people during footage on a show is dumb and insulting.
That five minutes is largely a section of the original cartoon series, cut to fit a movie's length. At first, the "steadicam" comment didn't sink in, then I realized they were doing a lot of that with the character shots.
I'll have to see the movie to put things in context. It is going to be difficult to transition from a series-long cartoon to a feature-length film.

You're right, they have an arduous task in translating such a long TV series into the format of a few hours while keeping the main story intact. There was a battle with the Gamilons on just about every planet in our solar system, from Mars all the way to Pluto.
I remember one episode where the Star Force was hit over and over by this huge "reflex gun" that shot laser beams off of a series of mirrors that were aligned to strike the Yamato.
I believe the battle was off of the moon of Jupiter, Titan. The Gamilons had a huge base there. That was one of the more interesting episodes and concepts of the series.
