Title: A Mug Made for Film
Post by: Mofo Rising on January 09, 2011, 04:58:50 AM
The film industry is nothing if not obsessed with physical beauty, but I think the ugly people deserve recognition. There are actors who just physically stand out in every movie. They may not be good-looking, but they command your attention.

I'm glad that Danny Trejo is enjoying success these days. You couldn't say he is handsome; look at this picture:

You need an actor to play the scariest motherf**ker in the room? Trejo is your man.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, William Atherton. He played the worst a***ole in every '80s movie. Not sure if that was a good life choice, but take a look at him:

He has your attention as the smarmy guy who absolutely deserves a punch in the face. You only feel bad when you realize you won't be the one administering the punching.

So what ugly mugs do you think deserve special recognition? (No, you can't nominate your own.)

I forgot I was going to mention the grandfather of all ugly actors, Rondo Hatton.

Hatton was actually acromegalic, but his visage is iconic.

I was going to nominate my mug because two filmmakers that I've worked with said they would cast me as a bad guy in a heartbeat.

So I will just nominate my coffee mug then.

I would throw Michael Berryman in there, too. Freaky looking guy that definitely stands out in anything he's in.

He's the guy on the left, by the way. The guy on the right is just some random nutjob.  :tongueout:

Boris Karloff-Unlike his rival in horror Bela-who in his young days was a leading man in Hungary-Karloff was not movie idol material-but his brooding, gaunt visage was custom made for horror films.

Tor Johnson-Big,scary guy! Little makeup was needed to make Tor menacing-but in real life-he had a heart of gold. At Lugosi's funeral he broke down and cried so loud it made a scene....God bless him.

Let's not forget the ladies: the  great Marie Dressler

She won a best actress Oscar in 1931. This probably would be impossible today.

Another great not-attractive but terrific actress: 'horse faced' Edna May Oliver

In the 30's Oliver starred in her own series of murder mystery films as the crime solving school marm Hildegarde Winters:
