Title: Dislike The Actor Yet Loved The Role
Post by: Mr. DS on January 09, 2011, 11:21:30 AM
Are there certain roles that you love played by an actor you can't stand.  The one that comes to mind for me is Tom Cruise as Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder.  There are others but thats the first one I thought of because I just watched it the other night.

Brad Pitt in Se7en.  I don't actually hate Brad Pitt but he' not my favourite guy either.  I would normally bypass any movie that he's in just on principle.

But I thought his portrayl of Det. David Mills was excellent.  Especially at the end, his performance was just heart wrenching.

Can I turn this around a bit?

I love Dame Helen Mirren but I don't have much love for the character she played (and won an Oscar for) in The Queen.

Back to what DS said:

I loathe Joss Ackland but the character of Arjen Rudd that he played in Lethal Weapon 2 was great ~ the same would probably go for Derrick O'Connor in the same film. Also I can't stand Danny Glover but his character in Shooter was also great.

That reminds me of the bit that Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin did when they hosted the Oscars last year. They were talking about stars in the audience and Steve Martin said "...and there's that damn Helen Mirren," followed by Alec Baldwin correcting him: ", uh, Steve, that's dame." That cracked me up. I like how the two of them got picked for hosts, then made sure they would never host again by making fun of all the stars.

Anyway. For my contribution, I cannot stand Sandra Bullock. Let me emphasize this. I despise Sandra Bullock and always have. Her and Keanu Reeves. In other words, strap me down A Clockwork Orange-style with The Lake House and you wouldn't need to administer any drugs to induce fear and nausea. I also detest the food at Arby's, and my wife always makes the joke that my ideal date would be dinner at Arby's with Sandra Bullock followed by cuddles on the couch watching Speed. Yeah, my wife's a crack-up.

Anyway, after all of that I have to admit that I liked The Blind Side a little bit. It was the first time I've ever been able to stand the sight of Sandra Bullock.

Speaking of Keanu Reeves, there are two films he's been in early in his career that I like: Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure and River's Edge.

Hello fellow Bullock hater.  I will admit though I have yet to find one single film she has been in that I can stand more than 5 minutes of her.

Reeves I can take or leave.  He will always be Ted to me no matter what.

Crispin Glover is just too weird for me to take.  But as George McFly he was just perfect.

Brad Pitt in Inglourious Basterds.  I'm not a big fan of his at all but he was pretty damn good in Basterds.

Tim Robbins- Generally I dislike his movies, as well as him in them.  But, I do have a soft spot for both Shawshank Redemption as well as his small, passing role in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.

Matt Damon- I liked him in Dogma.

Perfect. Please watch Point Break and you will have the time of your life seeing Keanu Reeves getting abused throughout the movie   :teddyr:

Usually when I dislike an actor I don't care much about the role either. There aren't many actors I despise, and if I do they are usually rappers turned actors or annoying celebs or some b-actor, and they never play the "good" parts anyway.

That said I dislike Justin Timberlake. So much that I would never watch anything willingly with him in it. I've avoided Southland Tales (2006) and Alpha Dog (2006) because of him, and have no desire to watch The Social Network (2010) because of his involvement.

Christian Bale, Batman Begins.

He went back to his cruddy self in TDK.

Glover's a vastly underrated performer.  Class work.

CRISPIN GLOVER isn't "underrated..."  He's underarm.

Harrison Ford post 1995.  He just seemed to forget how to act.
Well...the guy who played Han Solo isn't that great an actor.

I'll second that.  He was also really good in TRUE ROMANCE.  (Maybe he needs Tarantino's writing to shine?)

Ben Affleck in HOLLYWOODLAND - surprised the hell out of me.

Gwyneth Paltrow in ROYAL TENENBAUMS - for once her frosty, "i'm so much hipper than you" persona was what the character required.

Michael Rappaport, just don't enjoy his comedy at all but I really liked his performance in SPECIAL.  He was pretty good in COP LAND too.

Pitt should do more Tarantino stuff.  But yeah, True Romance was cool too.

Affleck was decent enough in Chasing Amy.

For a while I was not interested in seeing GHOST RIDER,simply because, while I have always liked the character,I have always thought Nicolas Cage is over rated.
I remember sitting in the theater thinking to myself,y'know..I am actually enjoying this and Ghost Rider hasn't even made his first appearance yet.

After seeing TITANIC, it was hard for me to take DeCaprio seriously.  I don't recall actively disliking him, but I didn't like him in positive sense enough to seek out his movies.

Then I saw THE DAPARTED, and I said to myself, "dang, this boy CAN act."  Good film.

After that, I decided to give him a chance on my "serious actor" list.  CATCH ME IF YOU CAN and BLOOD DIAMOND cinched it; I was blown away by BODY OF LIES.

Little different than the topic called for, I guess, but I went into THE DEPARTED convinced I would not like him in that role.  It helps to keep an open mind.

Not a big fan of Cage either-he always seems to speak in a dull monotone-but I enjoyed him in VAMPIRE"S KISS.

Friends, I also don't like Nic Cage, but I thought he did his job alright in Con Air.
