Wyrewizard started a thread in good movies about movies with ghosts, but when I skimmed it I thought it said movies about wizards. What are some good (or bad) movies about wizards?
I can't think of one.
Ummm...
Wizards (1977)
is that good?
It's a Ralph Bakshi animated feature, mixing fantasy and sci-fi. Think of the sword and sorcery genre set in a post-apocalyptic backdrop. I'm not a big Bakshi fan, but it's kind of a classic, but it's been so long since I've seen it I couldn't give you an honest answer on good vs. bad. It's got an interesting look and feel.
I really like Wizards. Its the only Bakshi I really like.
Other Possibilities:
Dungeons and Dragons (2000)

There's that one movie with the rings and stuff. :teddyr:
And then there's this:

It was exactly what the trailer makes it look like. Uber-cheesy.
Harry Potter obviously.
One of my favorite horror/comedys-The RAVEN-with Vincent Price,Boris Karloff and Peter Lorre!

Not a real "wizard" movie but "The Wizard of Speed and Time" is AWESOME. its a comedy about a down on his luck special effects guy who is trying to break into the industry. Top notch 80's digital and stop motion effects, lots of fun.
Hawk The Slayer which was from the mid 1970's. It starred Jack Palance as an evil warrior trying to get a sword from his brother, Hawk, if I remember right. I do believe there was some wizardry in that one.
Disney's Dragonslayer with Sir Ralph Richardson as the wizard who helps a young Peter MacNicol fight an evil dragon. This one is still my favorite of all the early 80's wizard movies. The dragon was just too awesome!!!
And just for the heck of it, it's not a movie, but the old Bally-Midway game Wizard Of Wor was always one of my favorite games. Anyone remember the good old Wizard and his synthesized speech? Great game!

I just watched this a week ago, and Andrew has a review (http://www.badmovies.org/movies/hawkslayer/) on this site. There's a witch in it who gets up to some
amazing low-budget sorcery. The silly string and glowing ping-pong balls were particular favorites of mine.
Obviously, the
Lord of the Rings movies fit this bill.
The
Warlock movies have a warlock in them. Not high fantasy, but sort of a wizard.
Back to
Hawk the Slayer, there was a spate of low-budget fantasy movies in the '80s, such as
Beastmaster. No real wizards in that one, but some "handsome" witches performing a bit of wizardry.
How could I forget Merlin's Shop of Mystical Wonders  I don't think there's much wizardry going on, just an old guy and a kid walking around town.
There's also Merlin's Apprentice (2006) starring Sam Neil. It was a TV miniseries. I um...wouldn't exactly recommend it.
The Sci-Fi Channel made some miniseries that was a crummy ripoff of Harry Potter, but I'll be darned if I can remember the name of it.

I think it was called
The Lord of the Rings and Stuff.
Then there was the softcore parody called Lord of the G-Strings I saw on Showtime one night. That had wizards in it.
Bell Book and Candle is an old-timey one.
There's THE WIZARD with Fred Savage, and of course THE WIZ with Michael Jackson and Nipsey Russell.
How about THE WARLOCK (1989)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098622/
LORD OF ILLUSIONS (1995)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113690/
How about the 1978 TV movie "Dr. Strange", based on the marvel comic?
EXCALIBUR (1981)
THE BLACK CAULDRON (1985)
THE HOBBIT (1977)
RETURN OF THE KING (1980)
MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL (1974)- Though he calls himself an enchanter.
The Magic Sword, The Sword in the Stone, and The Wizard of Oz have wizards in them.
Wasn't the troll in Troll a wizard before he turned into a troll?
I don't know but

The Sword and the Sorceror has a Sorceror. That's kinda like a wizard.

Excalibur has a pretty great Merlin in Nicol Williamson.

That preview just pushed all the right buttons for me. I must see that!
"By the power of the Prince of Dark
NEEEEEEESSS!!!"
The Magic Serpent, an old Japanese fantasy movie from the 1960's had an evil wizard in it, trying to destroy a young prince who was being trained in magic and fighitng skills by a very old Ninja warrior\sorceror. Great movie if you can see it.
Also, Daiei studios' Yokai Monster really blew me away; what fascinating ancient folklore the Japanese had! This one had it's share of sorcerors and wizards in it too, although the Yokai were the main focus.
Oddly there was a movie (or cable movie) that had a wizard... I dont remember much about the movie because I remember not actually liking the movie; it was something like a kid movie with kids going back in to medieval times) anyway there was a kickass scene (saddly the only for this movie although I have never seen it done in anyother movie) in the scene the kids and wizard was being chased by some bad knights and he magically casted a brickwall for their escape. I dont remember if the effect was cheesy or not... I just remember thinking that was a perfectly cool answer in a D&D game... :)
Torin Thatcher was pretty good as the evil magician Sokurah in The 7th Voyage of Sinbad.

That reminds me that Tom Baker (of
Dr. Who fame) played the evil wizard in
The Golden Voyage of Sinbad.
The Conan movies were full of good and evil wizards. I'd rate Mako's character just about my favourite movie wizard.

Conan O'Brien made movies full of wizards?
Is there anything he can't do?
Don't forget Simon, King of the Witches.
The Raven is on Thistv Sunday.
