Title: How long will this keep?
Post by: BTM on February 04, 2011, 08:28:00 PM
Hmm.. got some polish sausage that's been in the freezer for awhile.

Anyone know when that stuff will go bad? (Freezer burn, I think they call it.)

Ahh, probably shouldn't risk it. Just sometimes I buy stuff and don't eat it as often as I'd think I would.

I know, this sounds really stupid to some, but honestly, I don't normally have this problem.  99.9 percent stuff I buy I eat in pretty short order (except sometimes canned goods, been know to forget I have them sometimes, but hell, canned stuff keeps for several years, so no problem there.)

I once had a can of some god-awful Campbell's Soup (Cream of Celery, or something) that sat in the back of my cabinet sooo long it swelled into something resembling a weird metal soft ball.

I would throw out the sausage.  You don't say how long it's been in the freezer, but if ice crystals have formed on it, it's more than likely gotten freezer burned.  It's probably safe to eat, but might not taste that great.

I wouldn't risk it. I'd throw it out.

Wow, someone remembers my stuff!

But, yeah, I'm going to pitch it.  I just hate wasting food.  That was drilled into my head when I was younger (which partially accounts for why I'm so heavy now.)

Serves you right for eating sausage with polish on it.  :twirl:

Well, how long has it been in there? Months? Years?

If it's been a few months, then it's probably fine.

Well if it's freezer burned, you'll know because it will be covered in frost.  Thaw it out and see if it still smells good, or at least not bad  :teddyr:

My experience with freezer burn is: it doesn't taste nearly as good as it used to.  Toss it.

Yeah toss it.  Unless it is an airtight package it will not last past maybe 2 - 3 months.  Airtight you can get a bit more out of meat.  However, if you need a guide as said above if it has frost on it forget it.  It will taste beyond off  in flavor.

This thread reminds me of this exciting blog Steve, Don't Eat It! (http://www.thesneeze.com/steve-dont-eat-it/).

Steve hasn't added a new eating challenge in a while.

I guess he shouldn't have eaten that tree brain...

I always liked the pickled pork rinds and the larvae.  Not so much the items but his humorous way of writing the article.

Rather than waste it, give it to your dog.  They eat anything and seem impervious to spoiled food.  If your dog turns his nose up at it - burn it and bury the ashes at a crossroads!!! :buggedout: :buggedout:

Just a note of caution: onions and garlic are toxic to dogs.  So are various byproducts of decay/spoiling.  You might want to think twice before giving questionable human foods to dogs or cats.

Well, sadly, I don't have a dog, they don't allow pets in the hotel.

I dunno, didn't really look freezer burnt, but I figured why that the chance?

As for long it's been in there, damn, I'm REALLY not sure.  I think since October, maybe later...  The use by said November something.

I don't know, I just have this compulsion against wasting food (unless it's vegetables, I'll toss them out like chicken necks).  I think it's something my mom drilled in my head, all that, "Clean your plate, no matter what!" type stuff.

Yeah, I wouldn't chance that with dogs.  Especially sausages originating in eastern europe, there seems to be a theme of garlic being put into the mix.

Menard, Menard, Menard...What am I going to do with you?  You remind me of my uncle.  Let us say if it can be misconstrued by him, it will be in the dirtiest way possible.

Yep, if it's well packaged, it will last a long time in the freezer. I once stocked up on T-bone steaks on special during the winter. I triple-bagged them in ziploc bags, made sure the air was mostly out of the bags, and kept them in a very cold deep-freeze. They were as fresh and tasty on Labour Day as they were in February.

Freezer burn is pretty easy to identify. Besides the ice crystals, the colour tends to fade and the surface looks noticeably dried out. If it's freezer burned, it won't look appetizing.

That's our lesson of the day...be sure to wrap your meat three times. :teddyr:
