Sometimes when a new format comes out, the older releases on the previous format will have advantages. For example, there are still LaserDiscs out there with unique special features. Likewise, I assume there are DVDs with advantages over the released Blu-Rays. Blu-Ray is still relatively new, so a lot of movies are still only available on DVD (or sometimes alternate versions are only available on DVD, like the extended Lord of the Rings films are still DVD only for the moment).
Two examples.. The Terminator DVD has the original mono soundtrack with the original sound effects. The Blu-Ray only has the remixed soundtrack with really awful new sound effects. It's incredibly stupid, by the way, as it's not like a mono track wouldn't have fit on the Blu-Ray.
Another one is the Halloween Blu-Ray, which I hear has the color "corrected" to be more accurate to what was shot - only the color distortions were stylistic choices to hide the locale and season the film was shot in. Meaning the more blue original is the director's intent, and looks better, so the one DVD version (think it's the 20th anniversay disc) is best.
Any others?
With the Alien movies, you can buy each movie individually on DVD, but on Blu ray, the only option is all four of them together. I loved the first two movies, liked the third, and despised the fourth.
Same with Star Trek The Original Series. I've seen those shows sooooo many times, and I might like to get a few favorite episodes on DVD (you can get two episode sets), but on Blu ray it's just season sets. I can't see spending the money for a whole season when it contains a ton of episodes that I find fairly mediocre that I've seen 10 times each and have no interest in owning.
Also with Star Trek, I'm quite confused about this whole added CGI and remastered theme song stuff. On the DVD season sets you can choose the original theme song or the (god-awful) remastered one. Even after reading entire in-depth reviews, I still can't figure out if you can get the original theme on the Blu ray. Good grief, like somebody nowadays could "improve" on music made in the late '60s
I've found that on some movies, (the original Friday the 13th is the first one that comes to mind) Blu Ray cleans it up TOO much. Sure, the picture looks great, but it doesn't have the same grainy feel...
I often wonder if blurays will go the way of Beta. Seems like every 10 years or so, there's a new format and stupid folks are prone to hopping on the bandwagon. I'm glad VHS's are still around, and DVD's have their advantages as well.
