Title: Hated The Movie But Liked The Visuals/Special Effects
Post by: Mr. DS on February 28, 2011, 08:29:49 AM
The main example of this for me is Titantic.  I absolutely loathe that friggin movie yet I found the prop, set design and special effects really convincing.

In recent memory I'd say Spielberg's War of the Worlds.  I thought it was crappy overall but the effects were fantastic.

Man, it must annoy the hell out of you then that the movie was considered that best film of that year then?

Anyways, for me, Blade Runner.  The story was way too slow and I could never get involved, and the acting was forgettable.  I was really getting bored and I couldn't even focus well during the action scenes.  It is very good looking though and very well done.  Other than, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Terminator Salvation, though I didn't really "hate" it with a passion.

I've never seen it but I heard The Last Airbender only had the CGi going for it.

I saw the trailer and I was like "This'll be AWESOME!" then I saw the acting in the trailer and thought "This is going to SUCK!!

I was right the second time. Graphics mean nothing when you boil it down.

I find that I only like the visual/special effects if I liked the movie. I know there are lots of people that will actually sit through a movie because it's a special effects fest and they know that's likely to be all they're going to get out of it, and there's nothing wrong with that, I just not one of them. I have to like watching the movie for badness on a different level. Take the Twilight movies, for example, not that they're stunning visually, but there's an example of a big-budget franchise that I can actually watch because it's so bad. I know, most people on this forum don't consider them to be "so-bad-it's-good," but I do. They have all made me laugh multiple times at how bad they are, unlike Avatar which just made me angry.

Independence Day.  Just unbelievably stupid, but good effects.  That was all the film had going for it.

I don't really hate it, but on the other hand I thought it was nothing spectacular. The visuals are top notch, but the story was really predictable and it drags in some places, which is probably why it generates some hate.

I actually enjoy Independence Day on a "so-bad-it's-good" level. I'm not sure why as I detest just about everything Roland Emmerich has made.

I'd love to see someone give Avatar the What's up Tiger Lily? treatment.

I might actually make it through the entire thing if that were the case.

Well all of you that disliked "Avatar," then won't be seeing "Avatar 2." This time--supposedly--it's underwater.

Clash of the Titans 2010... CGI = not too bad. Movie sucked big time though.

2012... CGI = AWESOME, over the top. The movie sucked, stars had way TOO MUCH LUCK.

I'm looking forward next to weekend, BATTLE: LOS ANGELES! I hope its good!

The classic "Independence Day" yes, I know this one is often hit upon even though it had good acting it would have been nice for a little more originality. Effects however were beautifully flawless.
