He was the king of bad movies. His films rarely made sense, had horrid acting, laughable special effects, poor continuity and were sometimes a bit on the slow side. But we still loved 'em, damnit!
Ed has given us treasures like: Glen or Glenda?, Bride of the Monster, Plan 9 From Outer Space and Night of the Ghouls. For his efforts (if any), the man deserves his own appreciation thread.
I always thought it was a given at badmovies.org that people here appreciate Ed Wood, the king of bad movies
That said, Plan 9 remains my fave Ed movie.
I think my avatar and sig speak for my side.
The great Ed Wood and his three masterpeices are responsible for me becaomse a fan of Bela Lugosi.
Oh, Edward D. Wood Jr. What a guy... :teddyr:
Honestly, as much as you guys will hate me for it, my favourite Ed Wood film is probably Orgy of the Dead. I mean, it has all the fun Ed Wood trademarks (bad acting, bad special effects (if you can even call them that), bad filmmaking) PLUS dancing topless ladies! I mean, who wouldn't want that?
I have to go with GLEN OR GLENDA? as my favorite, what with the deadpan cross- dressing Wood, Bela's rants, the serious but wacked narration "If the Creator meant for us to drive cars we'd be born with wheels" or something), and that weird surreal 'dream sequence'. And it's all upsetting the buffalo!
I've heard of him. He made bad movies, right?
Why don't we ever hear anything about Ed Wood, Sr.?
My first real introduction to Ed Wood was the segment of It Came From Hollywood that was dedicated to him.

Wood got a bit of exposure, and no doubt picked up quite a few new fans around that time, right after the Golden Turkey Awards was published. Plan 9's reputation as "the worst film ever made" caught on pretty easily, and still endures. I remember the first time I saw Plan 9, it was on Not So Great Movies, a weekly Sunday afternoon b-movie show on City TV in Toronto, back in the early 80s when it was a cool independent station. They made quite a big deal out of showing the worst film ever made, as I recall.
I actually really love Bride of the Monster. Plan 9 is fun to watch too at least for me.
BRIDE of the MONSTER is my favorite too...but give the REVENGE of DR.X a watch-bizzare!!!!!

Poor Gary Kent looks embarresed as hell...
(being that it's a nudie film,I should say em-BARE-ASS-ed....snicker snicker....)
ED WOOD Jr.
The Rolls Royce of 'so bad, it's good'
I think anyone who loves bad movies, b-movies and cult movies has to love Ed Wood. It's so pure because he never set out to make bad movies. He was a true artist. Good or bad is relative. I think abstract painting's look terrible, but I'm glad they exist, because I love the freedom of expression. Without Ed Wood, I probably wouldn't be such a huge Bela Lugosi fan. I would have missed out on Bela's truly great movies like "The Black Cat." I was always a fan of MST3K. It made me aware of bad movies and the people involved. Once I knew who some of these actors were, I checked out the other work they did. Good and bad. Same thing with Ed Wood. The "Ed Wood" movie with Johnny Depp made me a big fan of his. I just thought of Depp as some pretty boy, then I saw "Ed Wood" and realized he's the best actor of his generation. Just the fact that he wanted to play someone like Ed Wood showed me how open minded he is. Ed Wood himself was a man with more ambition than talent. But his deep desire and love of making movies is something that should be celebrated. He achieved his goal of entertaining the masses. Maybe in hindsight, but he achieved it nonetheless. If he had given up when people told him to, he wouldn't have left his mark on the world. That is the lesson of his legacy.
I liked The Violent Years - the dialogue was almost incomprehenisible and I thought it was hilarious when that guy screamed while getting raped by a group of girls! I'd like to see some of his lesser known films like Jail Bait as well.
Quotebut give the REVENGE of DR.X a watch-bizzare!!!!!
Yeah, that's a pretty wild film. Too bad its almost completely unknown, even in 'Ed Wood' circles.
"Why the HELL would anyone be so STUPID as to build a rocket launch pad on the coast of Florida?!?"

john candy always was pretty funny.
back in Highschool when I was discovering the world of camp and b movies I watched Glen or Glenda, Plan 9 and Night of the Ghouls. Those were the only ones I seen. Hollywood Video actually had a cult classic sections, which is pretty surprising for a a big chain, though the section quickly dwindled when DVD took over.
I enjoyed the Tim Burton biopic, but his real story seems so depressing ending with alcoholism and porn. :bluesad:
The truth of the matter is, there are MUCH, MUCH worse films by "more talented" directors. He made what he thought was interesting and wanted nothing more than to entertain people. If only he was able to see this website, so he would know that in life, people loved his work.
I especially love how the stock footage he always inserted into his films made little to no sense. :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle:

Honestly, as much as you guys will hate me for it, my favourite Ed Wood film is probably Orgy of the Dead. I mean, it has all the fun Ed Wood trademarks (bad acting, bad special effects (if you can even call them that), bad filmmaking) PLUS dancing topless ladies! I mean, who wouldn't want that?
actually, i feel much the same way... i wouldn't say it's my favorite, perse', but its' pretty dang close... in truth, orgy of the dead was the first ed wood movie i had ever seen, ...with a title like that, how could i resist?
its cheesecake sexploitation with a macabre twist, some people probably get bored by the extensive dance sequences and almost wholesale lack of plot, but to me that's part of the charm
really, i don't understand people who can get sick of watching nekkid babes shake their stuff... who are these freaks of nature? COMMIES?!?
Here's something: Lyle Talbot (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0847939/) was in as many Ed Wood films as Bela Lugosi.

My
only beef with Ed is ORGY OF THE DEAD. Making me associate boobies with boredom is close to unforgivable.
Then I look at that face, in that lipstick and blond wig, and I can't stay mad.

Ed Wood, jr. One of the great American heroes. Not only because of his love of films and filmmaking, but also because of his enlisting in the U.S. Marines, after Pearl Harbor, when he was only 17. He served till 1946, when he was discharged with several of his teeth missing and a disfigured leg. Injuries he received while serving with the Marines in the South Pacific.
His injuries did lead to his next career as an exhibit in a carnival sideshow. Most often portraying the bearded lady or the geek.
Besides his work in films, he was also a prolific author of pulp fiction.
Yes, Ed Wood was unique, but the world would have been a lesser place without him.

Didn't he only write the script for Orgy of the Dead? If thats so I guess you don't have any problems with his directing.
