Title: Ideas for things to put in my lunch box
Post by: BTM on April 10, 2011, 10:49:00 AM
So, I work late nights, from 11pm to 7:30am, so, naturally I can't really go out on my lunch break, so, being a good to whom food is important, I usually pack my lunch.

Problem is, I often get bored of the stuff I pack and end up going to a fast food place BEFORE work, cause I'm not looking forward to eating JUST the same stuff I had the past several days.

So, I need some ideas for things to pack.  I'm looking for something relatively inexpensive, tastes decent, doesn't take long to fix and (hopefully) isn't too unhealthy.

Here's some stuff I already pack:

Fruits: Oranages, bananas, apples, sometimes pears, peaches, and plums if they're in season.
Almonds. (Got this particular brand I like, comes in 100 cal packs of seven).
Sliced ham, cheese and mustard sandwiches.
Yogurt (usually Yoplait.)
Raisin Cinnamon bagels.
Peanut butter and cheese crackers
Jello (or sometimes pudding) cups
Granola bars (helps me get my fiber!)

Misc leftovers from dinner

Anyway, that's about all I can think of off-hand.  I don't do peanut butter and jelly much because, for whatever reason, I find my taste buds don't care for jelly much anymore.  (Must be something with getting old I guess.)

Anyway, appreciate any ideas!

Sliced ham, cheese and mustard sandwiches.

I usually get creative when packing sandwiches for lunch. Depending on what kind of sandwich I'm making I will include either sliced tomatoes, cucumbers or lettuce.
Stackers Kosher dill, pepperoncini, and Dill relish is also a must (not everything at once though). If I had to eat the same kind of sandwich every day (sliced ham, cheese and mustard) I'd get bored with it really fast

Here in Europe we have Instant Cup mashed potatoes. No idea if something similar is available in the states. They are cheap and come in different varieties and flavors (spaghetti sauce, croutons, french fried onion or Parmesan). Pretty good for a quick warm little meal.

Hormel Compleats.
Cups of brown rice.
Chicken wrap sandwiches.  Chicken (fried or baked) with lettuce, tomato and salad dressing or mayonnaise.  Wrapped in tortilla.
Chicken cashew salad.  (Chicken, cashews, lettuce, tomato, red onion, and mandarin oranges.  Top with dressing of choice though I usually just do red wine vinegar.)
Dried pineapples.
Oatmeal cups.
Asian noodles (there is some pre-prepped version out there and no not just ramens.)
If you are going with bagels also try the everything (has a number of different seeds and grains) if not your taste I understand.
Chef salad.
Various pastas mixed with veggies.  Always a good thing.

Energy drinks are basically sugar water with fruit flavourings.

You guys know they're a con, right ?

If you want all the nutrients of an orange without all the unwanted impurities of a fizzy drink.
Well, just eat a freakin' orange...

Not FRS.
FRS is HUGE on all kinds of vitamins.  It's not a caffeine overload.  I remember working with strep throat once.  Chugged FRS and felt the effects immediately.  Good stuff.

String cheese a common component in my packed lunches.

Also, I've recently embraced apple slices dipped in peanut butter. Tasty.

Sometimes I will grill up some boneless chicken breasts during the weekend on the barbeque, enough for a couple of dinners and lunches over the week. I often will pack up a cooked chicken breast to heat up in the micro, along with flatbread and hummus. This makes a tasty and very satisfying lunch.

my favorite of the list is the first.  :twirl:

I'm not a good person to ask on this one because my interns always make fun of my lunch. So what's wrong with me packing a stack of cold cut sandwiches back into the bread bag, 5 apples, and 5 cheese sticks every single week? I eat with one hand while working on science with the other so I need items that can be balanced delicately. Could be worse, my coworker for some reason is on an "antioxidant" kick and eats nothing but blueberries (no, for real, just a huge freaking bowl of blueberries every single day, kindof creepy actually since he's blue around the mouth for the rest of the day).

Can you use a fridge at work?

I really like this fake peanut butter called Better N' Peanut Butter!  It's made with peanuts and tapioca and stuff and tastes like peanut butter only it's a bit sweeter and gooier, but you have to refrigerate it.  It's only got 100 cals and 2gs of fat per serving.  It's not necessarily health food, but if you're trying to cut down calories and love peanut butter, it might be a good alternative.

Some of my other lunch favs:
English Muffins and honey
Raisin Bread
Banana Bread oatmeal (if you can find it, I think those F-ers at Quaker discontinued it)
Cereal
Tomato soup

that's all I got.

Wait.. you eat FIVE apples for lunch day?

Are they small apples?  Wow.

Found this article:

Best Foods to Include in Lunch Boxes

Fruit: Fresh Fruit or Dried Fruit.
Tip: Pack fruit that is easy to eat, such as berries, melon balls or grapes. You can also try a small container with mixed fruit salad.

Vegetables: Veggie sticks with some dressing to dip into, such as low fat ranch. Small container of mixed veggies.

Dairy: String cheese, cubed cheese, small cheese packages, and yogurt cups. Small container of reduced fat milk beverage (long life type).

Breads: Whole grain sandwich bread, bagel, flour tortilla, English muffin, whole grain crackers, pita bread.

Fillings: Cheese, tuna, turkey ham, baked black beans, peanut butter, lettuce, avocado, tomato.
Tip: Place sliced tomato between meat, cheese or lettuce, not next to the bread. This will keep it from getting soggy.
If adding avocado, drizzle with a little lemon to prevent it from turning brown.

Cereal Bars: Low fat, high fiber breakfast bars or a small container with high fiber cereal, or high fiber oatmeal cookies.

I'm tellin' ya, the grilled chicken and flatbread and hummus thing is awesome. Good lean protein and satisfying. I do it about once a week on average and it's always one of the more enjoyable lunches of the week.

Nope, that's for the week (1 apple, 1 cheese stick, 2 sandwiches/day. These days my drink is ussually a mug of coffee now that we have a secretary (sign of improving economy) who knows how to make good coffee). We have a fridge so typically I pack a weeks worth of food on monday and then that's what I eat for the week.
