on the flip side of DS's topic, http://www.badmovies.org/forum/index.php/topic,120701.0.html (http://www.badmovies.org/forum/index.php/topic,120701.0.html), what's your top ten (or more) favorite bands?
1) Sublime- hands down, if you know the 90's, then this song is what makes it a main nostalgic group, or something like that
2) Arch Enemy- my favorite Melodeath Metal band, mainly because of the use of growling, rather than semi growling/screaming
3) Firewind- This Greek band has one of the most talented guitarist today.
4) Avantasia- I may have recently discovered them, but I highly recommend them
5) Nevermore
6) Nightwish
7) Muse
8) Bad Religion
9) The Vandals
10) Cirrus
According to my last.fm playcount, these are my top 10 bands:
01. Chic
02. Sister Sledge
03. The Time
04. The Bar-Kays
05. Instant Funk
06. Con Funk Shun
07. Fatback
08. Midnight Star
09. Change
10. The Jacksons
And yup, they are favorites as well.
No particular order...I'm sure I'll forget someone that I'll have to add/replace later:
1.) Ratt
2.) White Zombie
3.) Prong
4.) Duran Duran
5.) Sepultura
6.) Michael Jackson
7.) Antrhax
8.) Testament
9.) Metallica
10.) Aerosmith

3. Shakespear's Sister
4. David Bowie
5. KISS

9. Lee Aaron
10. Regina Spektor
(I would never heard of 8 and 9 if not for Circus. Cheers, fella...)
I always like individuals (composers, singer-songwriters, great instrumentalists) better than bands. Also, many bands are mainly extensions of their most talented individual (Nirvana was just Kurt Cobain, right?) rather than true collaborations. So excluding individuals and extensions, my favorites would go something like
1. The Beatles
2. The Pogues (even though they came close to being just Shane McGowan's backing band)
3. King Crimson
4. Camper van Beethoven
5. Cowboy Junkies
6. Pink Floyd
7. Led Zeppelin
8. Asylum Street Spankers
9. The Flatlanders
10. Freakwater
1. Funkadelic
2. Parliament
3. Bootsy's Rubber Band
4. James Brown and the JB's
5. Alice In Chains
6. Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble
7. AC/DC
8. WAR
9. The Beatles
10. Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention
THE BEATLES
THE ROLLING STONES
THE STOOGES
MC5
THE PRETENDERS
PINK FLOYD
ROXY MUSIC
SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE
JEFFERSON AIRPLANE
BLUE CHEER
At the moment I'd have to say (man, this is HARD!);
1) W.A.S.P.
2) Saxon
3) Lillian Axe
4) KISS
5) Giant
6) Riot
7) MSG
8) Kix
9) Dirty Looks
10) Testament
But then, I like alot of stuff that isn't glam metal/thrash or AOR like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Fleetwood Mac (Buckingham Nicks era), Bob Seger, Blackfoot and Tom Petty. I just can never mix those artists with the ones above when people ask me.
1. Guided By Voices
2. The Stooges
3. Ghost
4. Mobb Deep / other 90's hip hop
5. Stones
6. ska rocksteady stuff from studio 1
7. Unwound
8. Fugazi
9. Slayer
10. Bab Brains
1.The RAMONES
2.BLACK SABBATH (Ozzy era)
3.The STOOGES
4.The ROLLING STONES (old school)
5.The BAD BRAINS
6.the CRAMPS
7.MOTORHEAD
8.the DEAD KENNEDYS
9.BLACK FLAG
10.the SEX PISTOLS
1. Blondie
2. Boston
3. Foghat
4. Journey
5. Foreigner
6. Chicago
7. Eagles
8. Fleetwood Mac
9. Little River Band
10. Styx
It's incredibly hard to pick just 10 bands and you know this could change as one discovers new/but mostly old bands too.
Anyways I'd say:
1) R.E.M.
2) Living Colour
3) Midnight Oil
4) Misfits
5) Minor Threat
6) The Skydiggers
7) The Ramones
8) The Clash
9) Rage Against the Machine
10) Creedence Clearwater Revival
In no particular order:
1) W.A.S.P.
2) Slayer
3) Lizzy Borden
4) Metallica
5) King Diamond
6) Mercyful Fate
7) Venom
8) Kiss
9) Anvil
10) Alice Cooper
1.) Beastie Boys
2.) Green Day
3.) The Aquabats!
4.) Devo
5.) R.E.M.
6.) HIM
7.) Bloodhound Gang
8.) The Ramones
9.) The Clash
10.) Bad Religion
This is tough, but I'll throw some out (in no particular order):
* THE RAMONES
* BLONDIE
* THE DOOBIE BROTHERS
* LYNYRD SKYNYRD (I mean real Skynyrd, before the plane crash)
* THE RASCALS
* THE LOVIN' SPOONFUL
* LED ZEPPELIN
* ELVIS COSTELLO AND THE ATTRACTIONS
* THE POLICE
* .38 SPECIAL
There are probably about 10 more that are in contention, but let's stick with these for now.
That's a tough one. If I'm pressed, here goes.
* Elvis Costello
* Tom Waits
* Pink Floyd
* Andy Irvine
* Pogues
* Alice In Chains
* X
* The Chieftains
* Elvis Presley
* Johnny Cash

I would have put Tom Waits and Johnny Cash very high on my list, but they're not bands.
If I were to list my 10 favorite musical acts, excluding classical composers, it might go
MILES DAVIS
TOM WAITS
THE BEATLES
LOUIS ARMSTRONG
JOHNNY CASH
BOB DYLAN
BILL MONROE & THE BLUEGRASS BOYS
ANDREW BIRD
LIGHTNIN' HOPKINS
RAY BARETTO
Top 5 are set in stone, I could swap out many names in the bottom 5.

Yeah, I thought about that. My rationale was that Elvis Costello is associated with
The Attractions when it comes to the most definitive part of his career, just as Johnny Cash is closely associated with
The Tennessee Two/Three when it comes to his more seminal work. Andy Irvine, however, has no business in my list now that I think of it. But yes, I was rationalizing a bit.

And oh yes, I dig Andrew Bird too.
Hm, strictly speaking in terms of bands, I guess this is my list:
The Church
The Beach Boys
Radiohead
The Beatles
XTC
Genesis (I like Gabriel and Collins eras)
The Flaming Lips
Talk Talk
Gentle Giant
Popol Vuh
I'd like to put King Crimson or Talking Heads on my list but I feel like I haven't listened to enough of their work. Oh, and I really like Tears for Fears, Yes, Magma, Pink Floyd, and many others.
doesn't have to be restrictly bands.
Pilgerman - I love Popul Vuh!

Then I have an entirely new list. Well, not really.
I would take off a couple and add David Bowie, Chuck Berry and "Weird Al". But on the whole, I like my list.
Okay, let me get my head together...........
1. Swans
2. Killing Joke
3. Carcass
4. Skinny Puppy
5. Controlled Bleeding
6. Pink Floyd
7. Scorn
8. Talk Talk
9. The Obsessed
10. Jesu
I had "early Iron Maiden" listed but replaced it with Talk Talk. Maybe this thread should read "50 favorite bands" - that'd be a lot easier.
For me it's #1-Rush, #2-Led Zeppelin, #3-Iron Maiden, #4-The Clash, #5-Kiss, #6-The Who, #7-Cheap Trick, #8-The Beatles, #9-Bad Religion, #10-The Ramones.
1. Alice in Chains
2. Arch Enemy
3. Protest the Hero
4. Lamb of God
5. Nightwish
6. Megadeth
7. In Flames
8. Children of Bodom
9. King Diamond
10. Chimaira
