The Rev mentioned that 100 lists were a lost art-NAH! Here's a new one!
I'll start!
1. JACK (King) KIRBY!
The first artist ever for Capt.America,the Fantastic Four,the Hulk,the X-Men,Thor,the Avengers,Sgt.Fury,the Inhumans,the Eternals,Machine Man,Devil Dinosaur,Boy Commandos,Kamandi,Omac-too many too list!
All Jack's art looks like it's made of rock and steel...and crackling with electricity! Cinematic!

2. NEAL ADAMS (helped make DC great in 60s and 70s and Batman, Superman, Green Arrow and Green Lantern rarely ever looked better) - a fantastic artist!!

4. JACK DAVIS-
Not only was he an icon of EC's horror line of comics, but a classic artist of MAD. Beyond that-he worked for TV Guide-did movie posters, ads, bubble gum cards. His art is easily recognizable. Jack Davis was a CLASSIC!!!

7. WILL EISNER
Mr.Eisner invented the modern comic art style-and surpassed it! Back in the 40's when Superman and Batman were stiff charecters-Will was doing the SPIRIT-and changing comic art history,

8. BORIS VALLEJO

So many people I could bring up. I am literally chomping at the bit to bring up John Severin. But if we are talking about historical importance, I am surprised that nobody has brought up...
9. Steve Ditko
(http://joshgranger.com/wp-content/uploads/image/new%20stuff/drstrnge.jpg)
Ditko is what you may call a bit eccentric. Kind of a guy who never met a Ayn Rand tract he didn't like. But Marvel Comics would be nothing without this guy. Integral to so many superhero franchises he helped create.
Plus, it's hard to find a guy more eccentric than Kirby. It's amazing Marvel worked so well with the "interesting" talent they had.
10. Alex Ross
I'm surprise he wasn't brought up sooner. The good is so good, they had to retire an award for painted covers because he was winning every single one of them every year. He is awesome.

11. Basil Wolverton!
Most know Basil's work from his early MAD stuff...or his covers for DC's PLOP!. But few realize that he also did some fantastic work for independent companies horror and sci fi titles...AND his illustrated version of the Bible (yes-the BIBLE!) is nightmare inducing!
from his illustraded Bible!-

I think his style -along with Will Eisner-influnced my own work...
No where as good,of course.

Just a quick question. Who did the original covers for Famous Monsters? They look awesome.

Just a quick question. Who did the original covers for Famous Monsters? They look awesome.
Most of them were done by the GREAT Basil Gogos! He's still doing art! He did a cover for the comic book _BELA LUGOSI'S TALES FROM THE GRAVE!

12. JOHN ROMITA SR. (did brilliant work on Spider-Man and actually successfully followed Steve Ditko). His art helped bring to life some of the best stories I ever read (some of them albeit in reprint form).

@RC, Basil Gogos... He does GREAT work! Thanks for the info.
13. George Pérez (the master of the mega-event crossover and he helped revitalize the Teen Titans and Wonder Woman)

I actually like that quite a lot, RCMerchant.
Have you done multi-page stories, or is it all single-panel stuff like this?
You should consider putting together ashcan-style comics for your local comic store. There isn't any money in it, but I would read it.
Careful, though. You don't want to end up a CBLDF case.
14. Walt Simonson
I've always liked Walt Simonson. He helped bring back a mythical quality to Thor, but did good work all over the Comics World.

16. Arthur Adams
He's probably most well known by most from his work on the Uncanny X-Men with Chris Claremont.
Never the most prolific of artists, these days you can usually find his artwork in cheesecake pictures and giant monster spreads, or often both (God bless him).
I find his artwork a joy to look at, and will usually buy anything with his name on it. Well, I haven't bought the Hulk stuff. Much as I love Adams work, the writing there is really stupid.
Here are some examples:

17. Frank Miller
His style is certainly distinctive and his art is memorable for Batman (The Dark Knight Returns), Daredevil and Sin City in particular.

I don't read superhero/action comics (except Paperinik), so...
18. Carl Barks.

19. The godfather of American manga, Ben Dunn!

These first two are by Brian Bolland. A great artist in his own right, but he rarely does more than covers.
Yeah you're right, Deodato did the art inside...

Actually I do think Bolland belongs on this list too though so perhaps # 21?
Boy! - I love Kirby's work!

OK the thread was about the top artists, but there's this guy....
His name was fletcher hanks, and he wasn't a top 100 comic artist. I don't think he was a top 1000 artist.
In fact he was bad. Incredibly bad. Surrealistically bad. Mind croggingly bad. There is just nothing to compare it too, itcs that bad.
In fact it's so completely bad on every level it's mesmerizing. Itcs developed a cult following, much like the mind blowingly bad movies of ed wood. Fletcher hanks has been called the ed wood of comics, which is u fair to ed wood for various reasons.
Let me show you some fletcher hanks comic art. Prepare to have your mind melted.

If you think your mind cam survive it, here's a link to an online collection of the insanity inducingky bad art of fletcher hanks, and the only thing worse than hanks' art was his writing.
