Title: Clash of the Titans
Post by: Robocop on May 07, 2011, 02:30:20 AM
What does everyone think of Ray Harryhausen's last featured film Clash of the Titans?

TBH I thought it was quite mediocre with horrible acting, sloppy pacing, and a problematic script. Not even the stop-motion could save it which hasn't aged too well and I'm a big fan of Harryhausen's work. I don't think its terrible, it certainly has its moments and it does have some charm, but with not much character development and poor pacing it was weak.

It's still marginally better then the remake that only manages to get 2 things right. The opening of the film introducing Perseus with his "family" and leaving out the mechanical bird. The VFX in a way weren't that much of an upgrade from the original. I know that sounds stupid but it felt like I was playing a video game, terrible CG graphics.

I think its Harryhausens masterpiece, but I know some people don't care for it. It'll always be better that that POS remake! I even heard its getting a sequel! A sequel to a remake of a movie that never had a sequel!

I enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to the sequel. Pretty much what I said in the Clash of the Titans thread  http://www.badmovies.org/forum/index.php/topic,129425.0.html

Are you honestly surprised by that. The remake performed well at the Box Office with a worldwide gran total of $493,214,888 from a budget of $125 million. it ranks 80th on the Worldwide highest-grossing films list, and was charted at #1 for two weeks in a row upon release.

Besides, its clearly a different vision to that of the original which was obviously left open for a sequel should have it reeked in the awards which it unfortunately did.

Uhh, must of missed that. Though to be fair; this thread is reserved for both films (more so the orignal and not so much the remake)

I love Clash Of The Titans, it's a classic old school adventure flick. I grew up watching it, and I've seen it so many times I've lost count. I don't think that the acting was particularly bad and I'm very fond of the use of stop-motion, well anything that's not CGI really. It had everything to me, love, revenge, greed, power and mythical beasts. I remember anytime that I did watch it, it was always with my dad or grandad and they always loved it too. I think that's because, it seemed like it was made a decade or two earlier (it does seem dated compared to fantasy films that were to follow a few years later), and the fact that it is just a great movie IMO.

I think I've only seen the original Clash twice.  Once in the cinema, and once either on TV or on VHS.  Both times were many years ago, so my memory could do with some refreshing.  But from what I remember, it was a lot of fun (to a kid) and I loved the mechanical owl.  I have the comic adaptation of Clash somewhere, too.

I really enjoyed the remake, and if they make a sequel, I'll definitely be wearing the inevitable 3D glasses for that one, too.

I saw the original in the theatre as a kid and liked it. I watched it about six months ago and liked it even more. It's a classic. I would watch it over the remake any day of the week. The stop motion and the cheesy acting and action is what we live for here, isn't it? I find the Medusa scene from the original far more entertaining than the remake. It reminds me of the Sinbad movies I loved growing up.

I don't like Clash of the Titans much.  It's pretty boring, the stop motion isn't that good (except for the scorpions), none of the actors are even trying, and that damn owl.

I was so indignant when I opened my trusted Videohound book only to find that they gave this movie (the original) a "woof!"-their lowest rating.  I LOVE this movie.  I try to look at it and see why others think it is so awful but I just don't see it.  Is it the special effects?

I couldn't go see the remake.  It would be like raping my childhood.

As usual, Circus is right.  There's a lot to complain about the original film (I've not seen the remake though I love LIAM NEESON stating "Release the Kraken.") but I think way back when, before Circus was born, young people then, like me, found CLASH OF THE TITANS surprising, engrossing, of course corny, but also too cool.   :teddyr:

I saw it in the theater and thought it was really silly.  I prefer the movie CLASH OF THE TIGHT ONES.

Clash of the Titans 1981.

It's definitely on my favorite '80's movies' list. I love it. I can watch it over and over again.

IMO It's WAY better then the POS remake... dissin Bubo like that... shame on them.

I even remember I had the Clash of the Titans lunch box when I was a kid.

I like the remake for no reason other than that it gave us a fabulous new term for taking a deuce.

I saw it when it was first released to theaters, and I am talking about the original and not the remake, and I liked it. Not as much as some of Ray Harryhausen's other films, but I did enjoy it.

And since I started talking about Ray, he is referenced in "Monsters, inc." in the restaurant, where Mike and Celia eat, which is called the Harryhausen. Which I knew, but what I did not know is that the octopus behind the bar references "It Came from Beneath the Sea," another of Harryhausen's films.

Seeing the 1981 CLASH OF THE TITANS on TV at around the age of 4 or 5 is what got me started on the wild, wooly, weird road of genre cinema!

I,too, saw it in theaters back inna day. No 7th VOYAGE OF SINBAD or JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS-but it's Ray! And-sadly-his final film.  :bluesad:
It's a great kid's adventure fantasy-but fun for adults too. I like it a lot.

I thought it was fantastic but then I first fell in love with it as a kid and I do recall it really scaring me at a few points, especially Medusa. I love the Harryhausen FX and the classic adventure tale. Great fun! They just don't make 'em like this anymore...

I totally agreed!
