I apologize for hijacking this idea, but I wanted to see what was happening when I was a kid. I picked 1971 because I saw WILLARD in the theater and loved it!
1 Fiddler on the Roof (UA) Nov 71 $38.261 m - Excellent. One of my favorite musicals. I saw the live stage play starring TOPOL about a year ago.
2 Billy Jack (WB) May 71 $32.500 m - Sure, it's cheap, cheesy, and makes "in your face" radical left-wing statements. But it's a ton of fun to watch.
3 The French Connection (Fox) Oct 71 $26.315 m - One of my top 10 favorite movies ever.
4 Summer of '42 (WB) Apr 71 $20.500 m - Excellent "coming of age" movie. This reminds me: I need to dig out the DVD and watch it again.
5 Diamonds Are Forever (UA) Dec 71 $19.727 m - One of my least favorite Bond films. Not an especially good Bond novel, either.
6 Dirty Harry (WB) Dec 71 $18.000 m - Classic Eastwood.
7 A Clockwork Orange (WB) Dec 71 $17.000 m - One of my top 10 favorite movies ever.
8 Carnal Knowledge (Embassy) Jun 71 $14.075 m - Haven't seen this one in a long time.
9 The Last Picture Show (Colu.) Oct 71 $13.100 m - Love it. I bought a double feature DVD that has this and NICKELODEON.
10 Bedknobs and Broomsticks (Disney)* Nov 71 $11.426 m - Saw it at the drive-in. Fell asleep.
11 Willard (Cinerama) Jun 71 $9.300 m - Saw it during its original theatrical run. I was 7 years old. Loved it. Also, read RATMAN'S NOTEBOOKS, the book it was based on.
12 The Hospital (UA) Dec 71 $9.042 m - Haven't seen it yet.
13 Klute (WB) Jun 71 $8.000 m - Excellent crime thriller, even if you hate Jane Fonda.
14 The Andromeda Strain (Univ.) Mar 71 $7.913 m - One of my favorite sci-fi movies. I would watch this instead of STAR WARS about 99 out of 100 times.
15 Big Jake (NGP) May 71 $7.500 m - Didn't like it the first time I saw it about 25 years ago. But I bought the DVD a few years ago and enjoyed it much more the second time around.
16 Shaft (MGM) Jul 71 $7.068 m - Probably my favorite Blaxploitation movie.
17 Nicholas and Alexandra (Colu.) Dec 71 $6.990 m - Saw it at the drive-in and loved it even though I was too young to really appreciate it. I own the DVD and I watch it every couple years.
18 Escape From the Planet of the Apes (Fox) May 71 $5.560 m - Okay, but nowhere near as good as the original PLANET OF THE APES.
19 Le Mans (NGP) Jun 71 $5.500 m - Saw the beginning of it at the drive-in (it was the second feature). I was with my aunt and 2 cousins and they didn't like the beginning of the movie so we left. I need to see this one some day.
20 The Million Dollar Duck (Disney) Sep 71 $5.250 m - Typical early 70s Disney fare.
* - Figure includes revenue from at least 1 major reissue.
WILLARD was the first movie I saw in a theater after we moved to Michigan!
Haven't seen any of those on the big screen. Wish I had though.

He was Clint Eastwood and Bruce Lee wrapped up into one. :teddyr:
I remember seeing A Clockwork Orange at the drive-in with my folks. I was 7 that year too. Wasn't vey interested in it at that age. The Andromeda Strain is one of my favorite sci-fi movies too, great characters and suspense, and that super-serious '70s scientist thing going on too. Saw Bedknobs and Broomsticks with my mom at the theater.

I saw
WILLARD with my brother and sisters in SPRING LAKE, NJ, a theater I think that's long gone now. We also saw
ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES at that theater!! :teddyr: We only lived there a year.

Yeah there's a lot of films from this year I've yet to catch. My fave film from this year is likely THE OMEGA MAN though.
There are some real groundbreakers in here. 1971 was a good year for film and babies.
