Quite a while back I had started a series of threads called "Top 5 Inferno" with various topics, inviting everybody to provide their Top 5 in a specialized category, along the lines of the music geeks from High Fidelity (2000) who would always talk about/debate their personal Top 5 this or that.
I'd like to revive that, because it seemed to be pretty fun, I'm just adjusting the title to "Top 5 Time."
So, to start things off, we'll go with Top 5 80's Comedies. So, let's have it. What are your personal Top 5 comedy films from the 80's. Here's mine, not necessarily in a particular order:
1. Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987)
2. Airplane! (1980)
3. Top Secret! (1984)
4. Arthur (1981)
5. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
There are so many comedies from that decade that I love, but I had to choose 5. The ones listed, I have to say, are movies that I would stop on if I were flipping through channels 10 out of 10 times. Some honorable mentions:
Caddyshack
Fletch
Real Men
Ruthless People
Summer School (so bad it's good entry)
Trading Places
5? Wow there is no way I can give you an absolute Top 5 on this. The 80's were a pretty good time for comedies and I'm notalgic about that decade so my favorites tend to fluctuate. However, my Top 5 for right now are:
1. Ghostbusters
2. National Lampoon's Vacation
3. Planes, Trains & Automobiles
4. Adventures in Babysitting
5. Back to the Future
I could have easily included Better Off Dead, Caddyshack, When Harry met Sally, Fast Times at Ridgemeont High and Spaceballs in this list.

Damn, I forgot that one!
I would put BROADWAY DANNY ROSE on the list. In fact, that's one of my top 10 comedies of all time.
Oohh, tough choices. So many good ones to pick. Five I enjoy
1. Beetlejuice
2. Ghostbusters
3. UHF
4.Caddyshack
5. Weird Science
Interesting topic, I like the "top 5" idea. This list is thrown together kind of quickly, without too much thought:
AIRPLANE! (1980)
THE BLUES BROTHERS (1980)
THIS IS SPINAL TAP (1984)
RAISING ARIZONA (1987)
A FISH CALLED WANDA (1988)
Just missed: BACK TO THE FUTURE (1985), A CHRISTMAS STORY (1983), THE PRINCESS BRIDE (1987)
I went with standard comedies and didn't include black comedies (another top 5 category, maybe?) If I had I would have considered AFTER HOURS & THE KING OF COMEDY, BRAZIL, HEATHERS... and maybe even EVIL DEAD 2?
1.AIRPLANE! (1980)
2.MONTY PYTHON'S THE MEANING OF LIFE (1983)
3.PEE WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE (1985)
4.I'M GONNA GET YOU,SUCKA! (1988)

Wow. Not too many people are hip to
Withnail and I. I saw it in 1987 at a theatre in L.A. I saw it because the movie poster looked interesting. I liked it so much I went back and saw it again.

I'd say most people over 30 in England have seen it at least once, pretty much. bigger than the 'cult' status I'm guessing it has in the states and elsewhere.

if you mean the game where you have to match them drink for drink as the film goes on,then no. I've heard it is very difficult lol

I've read about it. I understand that Rum is typically substituted for the lighter fluid. I think keeping up with Withnail throughout the runtime of that film would be fatal to most people.

Withnail and I is considered an important piece of English film history from what I understand, while here in the States it is considerably more obscure. I saw it when I was 19 years old, living in the suburbs of Los Angeles, and had just discovered all the indy film venues that were just a 30-minute drive away. Come to think of it, I think I saw
Withnail and I three times in the theatre, twice on two different dates. I think I was trying to impress them with how worldly I was by taking them to see a foreign film. :teddyr:
I saw Whitnail & I on tape a few years after it was released so I guess I don't think of it as an 80's film. But it was brilliant. I don't know why Richard Grant hasn't become a bigger star.
Looking at this list it's pretty obvious that the 80's was a good decade for comedies. I'd even go so far to say that as far as comedies are concerned, it was the Best Decade.

Some substitute the lighter fuel with vinegar as the director did in the film, without telling Richard E Grant, who thought it was going to be water.
Kinda saddened and surprised by the lack of love for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. It's a classic IMO.
