I just need some more metal groups in my life, here's what I got:
Firewind
Arch Enemy
The Agonist
Children of Bodom
Soilwork
Iron Maiden
some Metallica (...And Justice for All towards their earlier stuff)
Sirenia
Nightwish
Lacuna Coil
Megadeth
Avantasia
UnSun
Nevermore
Iced Earth
Draconian
Dream Evil
Samael
Nachtmystium
Sentenced
Ethereal
Graveworm
Dimmu Borgir
Within Temptation
In Flames
Xandria
As you can see, I mostly listen to stuff from Europe. Got any suggestions? Thanks!
one more thing: I either listen to the guitar riffs, the melody, or if the singer isn't screaming all the time, as in Nevermore, Metallica, Iron Maiden, etc. If it's stuff like Behemoth, I won't listen to it. other than that, I'll listen to it.
Based on what you like already, I'd give some of these artists a try. You may have (should of) heard of a few.
Testament
Sanctuary
Fates Warning
Annihilator
Savatage
Chastain
Accept
Early Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne (the Randy Rhoads albums are favorites of mine), I guess Led Zeppelin is usually considered heavy metal, though only a few of their songs really are.
Circus will probably have a suggestion or two :teddyr:
Edit: lol, he already did.
Chastain-
Savatage-
Testament- Older stuff  newer stuff
Sanctuary-
Annihilator and Accept- Mixed feelings
Led Zeppelin is great, but with my dad "singing", it just ruins it for me. Black Sabbath is great as well

Aww dude, Testament's newer stuff has been good, at least "
The Gathering" and "
The Formation Of Damnation" -they were monstrous returns to form. I wasn't keen on "Low" or "Demonic" and some of their re-recordings, but they're still one of a number old school thrash bands out there putting new metal bands to shame.
Hearing
this song live is still one of the greatest musical experiences of my life:

Fates Warning with the old singer.

That album is ridiculous. Everyone should own it. Even those who don't want it.
No Slayer?

in my humble opinion 'Never Neverland' is the only Annihilator album anyone needs to hear. It is a masterpiece of metal...the rest don't really hold up. like I said, just my opinion
also Pantera needs a mention - any album from Cowboys From Hell onward. such a heavy sound they pioneered (or stole from Exhorder depending on who you believe)
Not really similar to those listed, but I like Neurosis.

Werd! I got to see Testament back in 1990 in Allentown, PA
They did their classics,
Trial By Fire,
Disciples Of The Watch,
Souls Of Black and a host more. Even cooler, was that their opening acts were Nuclear Assault and Savatage.
Indeed, Testamant is still working with the force they had when they were younger, esp. in light of Chuck Billy's fight with cancer. And on that note, more power to him!

Annihilator is okay in my book, as well as Accept. It's just not as exciting as some other stuff I listen to.

Circus, your knowledge of metal is impeccable. I am very impressed.
How'd I forget, I love Devin Townsend! His stuff can be pretty ecclectic but his work is mostly metal:

Yep, that's him. I haven't listened to much of SYL, but I understand that that group was an outlet for Townsend to make heavier and angrier music.
