Title: Top 5 Time: Bug Movies
Post by: Flick James on May 31, 2011, 10:16:46 AM
Okay, this one is definately a "good" or "bad" movie category. List your top 5 movies featuring bugs. It could be an obvious one like Them (1954), which is certainly on my list, but could also be a movie that is not necessarily just a bug movie but features them enough to be included. So, your top 5 Bug Movies, good, bad, cheesy, whatever. Here's mine, no particular order:

Them! (1954) - an obvious choice and a classic.
Creepshow (1982) - not a bug movie, but the last segment features so many real bugs and is so creepy that it's in my list.
Kingdom of the Spiders (1977) - yes, arachnids count
The Fly (1986) - David Cronenberg is the man
Arachnaphobia (1990) - people have mixed feelings on this one, but I think it's a bug classic.

Yes, I agree. When I think of Creepshow 1... I think of bugs.

The Temple of Doom (1984) had lots of real bugs as well. (inside the wall trap)

The only bug movie I can think of is Empire Of The Ants (1977).

Starship Troopers (1997) - Beverly Hills 90210 kids get sent off to war and slaughtered by alien bugs.  What's not to like?
Starship Troopers 2 (2004) - I really like this movie.  Me and three other guys   :teddyr:
Bone Snatcher (2003) - Good characters, great desert scenery, intriguing plot.
Spiders (2000) - fun, silly, a good giant spider time was had by all.
Insecticidal (2005) - total cheese fest with overgrown bugs chasing girls around their sorority house.

Hmm...

Them! (It's about of my Top 10 favorite films of all time)
Eight Legged Freaks
Bug (Too obvious?)
Ants
Swarmed

If Tremors counts, get rid of Ants and Swarmed to put in the original and the sequel.

The Fly (1958). I'm a Vincent Price fan; what can I say?
Bug (1975). Sentient cockroaches. How scary is that?!?
Them! (1954). A more thoughtful look at giant radioactive insects run amok.
The Deadly Mantis (1957). A giant praying mantis! It says grace before it eats you!
Horrors of Spider Island (1960). Just because no one has mentioned it yet and it made me laugh.

The Swarm

I love the scene with the kid in the hospital.  I wonder how someone can see the same thing you do without reference?

Them! (1954) (I know mentioned alot but I love the ants)
Sick Girl (2006) (as Assisted Living Dracula mentioned that one was odd but good)
The Naked Jungle (1954) (It is a bit more real in its depiction)
The Nest (1988) (Watch it, I'm always creeped by cockroaches)
Mothra (1962) (You have to go really big sometimes)

The Fly - Brundlefly!
Creepshow - that final story is so unnerving  :buggedout:
Starship Troopers - Movie is hilarious and it's intentionally, deadpan hilarious.
Meet the Applegates - Been years since I actually seen this but teenage me really enjoyed it.
I will edit a 5th on in later.

The Fly (1986)
Meet The AppleGates
Arachnophobia
Joe's Apartment (If I was Jack, this would be my Starships Troopers 2 lol )
Men In Black (Do alien Bugs count???)

As a bonus, I also kinda liked 'Eight Legged Freaks' I liked the attempt to bring a B movie bug flick to a main strem audience.

1. Them! (arguably the movie that started it all and probably still the best of the bunch too)
2. The Naked Jungle (1954) - (yeah more realistic than THEM! and in some ways perhaps even scarier)
3. Mimic - (creepy idea involving insects imitating their prey)
4. Quatermass and the Pit (arguably the creepiest and most unsettling insectoid critters to grace the screen)
5. Kingdom of the Spiders - (spiders creep me out and this has William Shatner so yeah it makes the list)

Honorable Mentions:

Tarantula
Phase IV
First Men in the Moon
Horrors of Spider Island
All the Fly films (even Curse of the Fly)
The Deadly Mantis
The Monster That Challenged the World

I think that film was a more an attempt to pay tribute to those types of films from some recent information I gathered (whether that is true or not, I am not sure but I found it interesting).  That would explain why there are so many common elements from other movies of the type in it that are rather obvious.

Speaking of 8 legged freaks...anyone remember KISS OF THE TARANTULA (1976)?
It was kinda like WILLARD or STANLEY...only with a girl and tarantulas....

Phenomena (1985) comes to mind. Anyone seen that one (apologies in advance if this has already been listed)?
