NSFW!!!!The idea for "Capture the Fag" originally came up as a joke during a lunch break at one of my past Airsoft events. Instead of Capturing the Flag, we'd try to capture a flamin' gay guy. We eventually said "F**k it." and went ahead and did it because to our knowledge, no one has ever done this in the world of Airsoft.
We decided to push the boundaries a little.
I'm the one running the camera and commenting.
Is this video offensive?

What do you think?
:bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle: :bouncegiggle:
I'm not offended. Then again I'm not gay...
We usta play a game called "Smear the Queer" in school....
A little. I'm not offended personally, but I can see where some people probably would be. Might be controversial enough to make for some good viral marketing if some group or other gets outraged enough. Oddly enough, I think it would probably offend fewer people if you used a real fag, rather than a straight guy wearing a colourful shirt and acting like a sissy. I think the portrayal is going to draw more disapproval than the whole premise of the game.
Me, I think it's in good fun. Seems like a lot of trouble for a bad pun though. :teddyr:

Now if they were trying to capture someone resembling (and acting like) Richard Simmons, the video would be ten times funnier. :bouncegiggle:
I wasn't personally offended by that, but I could see how some people would be if you are out there promoting it. If it's just between you and your usual group of buddies then fine, it's just for a laugh. "Flag", "Fag" it's not hard to see how that came about. In this day and age most people are sick of being "PC" and worrying about stereotypes, but on the same hand it can take one person to find something inappropriate and then there's uproar from all quarters.
Hmm... Well, as someone who identifies as bi-sexual, and knows a lot of openly gay people, I honestly don't find it that offensive. I can see how people would find it offensive, but then again, most of those people would just be the types who like to stir up trouble to get attention and make mountains out of molehills. I actually thought it was pretty funny. I showed it to a friend of mine who is extremely big on the whole stop using the word fag ideal, and he doesn't even think it's that bad. So long as you're not actually trying to capture a gay person, I'm cool with it. :tongueout:
I'd still be careful, and be ready in case someone tries to start some sh!t, but otherwise I think it's fine.
(And yes, this is the first time I've talked about my sexuality on this board. )
I think what makes me laugh the most is how they keep alternating between gay jokes and apologies. :bouncegiggle:
The word "fag" is equatable with words like "niqqer" "kike" "b***h"... I'm not offended, but I do think it's stupid.

That was the one thing that bothered me, that "fag" is just about the most derogatory term there is for a homosexual. It's pretty much always used as an expression of ridicule or contempt, unlike some of the other slang terms that seem to get played with more. In this case, the joke won't work with any other word, however. So again, hell of a lot of trouble for a bad pun.
Video, not all that offensive. Concept, pretty much so.

Is not the word "fag" in the UK mean cigarette? Someone told me that along time ago...
I dont mean to offend anyone with that word, just asking, to each is own I say.

Oh ok, it's true then.
As long as its just having fun and not hate speech I don't find it offensive

A few years back, a friend of mine had some family visiting from Liverpool. We're sitting on the patio drinking beer when one of them turns to me and says "do you fancy a fag?"
I knew what she meant, but it took a second to register. Just enough time for a big double take.

Another addition to that story I've heard about. Someone told me that at one point only men smoked cigars and women smoked "fags". Hence it being "girly" to smoke a cig. I've always doubted it but does anyone know of any validity to that rumor?
Btw Ash, if you're serious about making this sport more popular I'd avoid putting out the video into too many sources. Although it is entertaining, the world has been on a "political correctness" rampage lately.
Agree with Ed, video's not that bad, but the concept's offensive, so why go through the trouble?
Easy solution though: capture the HAG. Nobody gets upset [no point in getting negative publicity] and it's probably funnier to have someone running around with a walking frame and in old lady outfits. Same pun but won't get you any thumbs down from any group.
I liked the way everybody had to explain they weren't a homosexual.

And the AARP is outraged. :bouncegiggle:
I have no idea who the AARP is but I'm assuming it's pensioners, and as such they shouldn't be on that magic internet thingy anyways.
Ah just looked them up. They have a website and everything! Who said old dogs can't learn new tricks?

Don't anger them.
I understand they eat young whippersnappers' souls.
Dress in gore and blood and call it Capture the FRAG.
If they wanted somebody to dress flamboyantly and act all fruity, they could play a game of "Capture the Drag."
I'm suprised that none of the Gay Rights groups have gotten upset over the use of the phrase "homogenized milk" over the years. :bouncegiggle:

Uh-ohhh looks like I better "moo-ve" it on out of here before I'm forced to
cow-er at the feet of this bovine entity who seems to have a

My reputations at "steak" here

I have noticed that in recent years "homogenized" has been spelled out in full on packaging here. I remember it being simply "homo milk" in the 80s. Used to be a source of giggling and "you are what you eat" type jokes among us kids. I'm pretty sure that's the reason for the change, that "homo" on its own had a completely different meaning (and a potentially problematic one) for more and more people. No coincidence either, since "homogenized" and "homosexual" do come from the same root - a Greek word meaning "the same."
I spoke too soon. Some Canadian dairy companies still use the term.

The use of the word "Fag" was always planned to be used. Looking back, I used that word a bunch of times on the video and always had a nagging feeling that using it might be offensive to some people.
I think we all knew deep down that what we were doing was mildly offensive but we pushed those thoughts aside and went ahead with it anyway.
P.S.
I suggested "Capture the Hag" to the players and they love it!
I think you'll like this video I shot a few days ago. No controversy...just attacking and killing!

Unless such an event is done Benny Hill style I can see people taking offense. You get your "backwoods" setting, males and females armed with "guns" hunting a "fag".
Personally I don't think "fag" is as offensive as the N-word but should still be used with caution in my opinion.

AARP stands for American Association of Retired Persons. Basically, and this information comes from wikipedia, the AARP is a non-governmental, non-profit, non-partisan interest and lobbying group which addresses issues affecting older humans. As I am older than 50, I get letters all the time from them, asking me to join, which I have yet to do.
